AY RTW Sale

I was at a Flight Centre “do” in Melbourne this morning and asked the Finnair round world deal mentioned on this site.

The apparently competent rep there ( as explained on this blog) said I’d have to travel melb-Syd-Bankokk and then onto Helsinki and Europe and home via the USA.

I mentioned that I read, that to get round the 27 september flight start rule, it would be enough to fly a domestic Australian segment pre that date as part of the rtw ticket and then fly Sydney to Bankokk and Helsinki in November.

He insisted that the first flight needed to be outside of Australia and must be taken before 27 september.

Has he got it wrong or have the rules be tightened?
What do the T&C of the fare say?

They have it wrong. I tested it before I actually replied to you about it.

What is Finnair J like and what stopovers do they have OZ to Europe?
Finnair J is very like CX J, in 1-2-1 formation. I have flown via SIN, BKK and HKG to their hub in HEL, and onwards to many parts of Europe (e.g. MAN, LHR, CDG, TXL, VIE). Depending on fare rules you can have stop over in BKK, HKG & SIN either/both ways. We will stopover in HEL in June (as we did last April), to get over our jet lag before moving on to WAW.

We usually do open jaw itineraries, and our next is SYD-HKG-HEL-WAW, and return ARN-HEL-HKG-SYD.

Open Jaws are handy when visiting LON. Jump across to Continental Europe on seperate tix to ovoid UK dep tax.

BTW, AY have other Asian ports in China and Japan that might work for stopovers but transit connections may not work as well as the more popular SIN, HKG and BKK.

Quite similar to CX on their A359. On their A333 it's 1-2-2 in some rows, 1-2-1 in others.

You can pick from three combos of routing:
Combo A - via North America to Europe and back via North America
Combo B - via North America to Europe and back via Asia (RTW)
Combo C - via Asia to Europe and back via Asia

Stopovers via North America: DFW/LAX/SFO/HEL/JFK/MIA/ORD
Stopovers via Asia: KUL/SIN/HKG/BKK

HEL is permitted as a stopover in either direction. Stopovers are subject to routing restrictions, eg. if you pick SFO, you cannot do any other North America port as you must continue on SFO-HEL. There's too many combinations to list. You would be better posting what you would like to do and I can tell you yes or no.

Is MEL-xx_-ORD (stop)-JFK (stop)-HEL-xx_-MEL

Possible?

Partially yes.

To get to ORD you can do:

MEL-SYD-LAX-ORD
or
MEL-LAX-ORD
or
MEL-SYD-DFW-ORD
<stop>
buy your own ORD-NYC-ORD
ORD-HEL
<stop>
HEL-xx_-MEL (either via Asia or back via North America)

If you have no desire to visit Asia, and want to avoid buying your own ORD-NYC-ORD, then you could do something like:

MEL-LAX-ORD
<stop>
ORD-HEL
<stop>
HEL-NYC
<stop>
NYC-LAX-MEL

For everyone else... I didn't previously notice but there's also a version of this fare allowing you to route via Japan. It's higher priced (about $500 on average) than the North America or Asia versions but still not bad.

So you could do...

Australia -> Japan -> Europe -> North America -> Australia or vice versa
Australia -> Japan -> Europe -> SE Asia -> Australia or vice versa
Australia -> SE Asia -> Europe -> SE Asia -> Australia
Australia -> SE Asia -> Europe -> North America -> Australia or vice versa
Australia -> North America -> Europe -> North America -> Australia
Australia -> Japan -> Europe -> Japan -> Australia

I feel I should know this, but how does one "PM" another poster? We are keen to explore the possibilities of these excellent fares and madrooster seems to have his finger well on the pulse...

G'day Matt. I would like to fly the following route: SYD QF EZE AA JFK AY HEL AY ROM AY HEL AY/SQ SIN QF SYD. Any idea what that eould cost? Thanks DM.

QF don't fly to EZE. You would need to go via SCL.

Depending on availability and final routing it would be approx ~$7100, as routing via South America isn't on sale.
