Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

SA just did. One positive related to the cluster that started a week ago with a returned essential worker from Vic. He isolated in a hotel but his cleaner developed it. Presumably his female partner developed it as did her friend. Now another woman has developed it as the first woman attended Adult College. Today the college has closed and 70 close contacts (several overlap) are now in hotel quarantine and the rest of the school, staff and teachers are in self iso until next Saturday week. All known sources so not too random.

The new Deputy CHO said he could not find any such modelling, so I would not call that blatantly lying. The new Deputy CHO said:

Neither would I. You took what I said 100% the wrong way.

My point was that he would not lie, and what Cheng stated was accurate. ie For the Australian to be accurate they all had to lying.

So I was saying that he would not lie, and so the graph/modelling did not exist.

ie

The attrition is my point. The Federal HO, and the Victorian DHO, The Federal Health Minister, and dan all deny that it is Vic Gov.

....
So do you really believe that all those I listed above are telling blatant lies then?

All firmly denied that there is any such modelling /graph. Even the new guy Prof Cheng, less than a week into the job is willing to lie on record too.

Admittedly I should have written it as

What sensitivity? I just like accurate facts.

The graph was debunked by many, both Federally and in Vic Gov and you refused to believe it just because The Australian attributed it to the Victorian Government.

Whatever. The Oz / its journo put is name to its report and attributed the data to the Victorian Government. I'm OK with consuming that news - its a hellavalot better than 'sources'. I'm also OK with the Vic Govt denying it - business as usual for all governments. I'm ALSO OK with being wholly disbelieving of the Victorian Government, given its tenuous relationship with [better not say it] in the current environment.

I'm surprised that there isn't more discussion here re demanding the government release its modelling, rather than trying to discredit a media organisation which purports to have it. Maybe the govt needs time to re-jig it :)

So, like... who do I invoice? If someone from high up is watching and believes my modelling is the best out there, then listen here... gps tower tracking cell phone pings will reveal where people have been, and who the super spreaders are. #Data is #King and #Queen
If you don't know how to map them, call me. 24/7

Thanks for that. The Australian strikes again!

OK, you've snookered me. Your Twitter hero tells us about GPS tracking (?of him?) ... super spreaders ... something about kings and queens???

Well, OK then! :) Oz totally discredited!

Gee, I love Twitter. 🤣

Now I know you are just taking the piss. The person indicated that it was his graph that The Australian published and attributed to being the Victorian Government.

ie Just add Source: Victorian government if you are The Australian. Or for everyone else it is Source: Paul Sougleris

And lucky you love Twitter as that evidently is where The Australian does its research.

It is a blight on our state and federal governments cannot find a mechanism to allow virtual sittings of Parliament, or at the very least something creative to allow parliaments to sit by using the space occupied by the senate and the house (or the assembly and the council in Vic) and have one house sit at a time, split between the two houses, televised and sharing the same PA system. It is 2020 not 1920! Private industry is managing perfectly adequately to run multinational businesses with the only people in the same room the ones physically producing the goods, why can't government find a way to do it? I guess, to flip a well known saying around, where there's a will not to do something, there' never going to be a way.

That aside, the Victorian government has already unilaterally severely eroded the rights of its citizens. It's said 100'000s don't have a right to go to work and earn a living. It won't allow 6.35 million people to visit their parents/children/siblings/close friends unless they live in the same household. It won't let 5 million people go further than 5km beyond their homes to exercise or shop. It won't let people get married unless some sort of compassionate grounds to do so. But that's OK, as long as we don't give people the option of wearing tracking bracelets?

f the government is the problem and it is voluntary tracking, maybe we could outsource the tracking to Google, Facebook or Apple, after all many people already voluntarily allow them to track their every movement. 🤣
Well the rules are the rules. I question how much risk there really is in having the houses sit. Currently the government is claiming that the CHO has advised against sitting, which he absolutely has not done (and nor should he).

And I do agree. The government has severely eroded the rights of it's citizens with very little accountability. None of it is OK by me, but at least some of it has been able to be debated and heard in the place which controls the laws and restricts the reach of the government of the day.

If the government controlled the upper house, it too would not have sat on Tuesday. Thank God they do not.

To answer the case of the 30 year old who died and RAM's post on the City to Surf and symptoms after flu.It is well known that following the flu there is an increase in heart attacks.

It is likely to be in fact after any respiratory tract infection.Research at Sydney University shows a 17 times increase in the risk of heart attack in the week after a respiratory tract infection.

So very possible it may be a heart attack in the 30 year old.
However if it occurs after the flu the death certificate is likely to say the cause of death was amyocardial infarction.

But a warning to those who like their fun ri=uns and marathons.Don't do it if you have just had a respiratory tract infection.

Apparently, there are a number of students at ANU who are sick. No idea with what.
They are interstate students who live in on campus accommodation. The ANU has said anyone testing positive are banned from campus until they show a negative test.
Thus, these students don't want to be tested as a positive test will result in the ANU kicking them out of their accommodation and they'll have no where else to go.

I agree that closing the ACT border is totally impractical.
Closing the Qld/NSW border was totally impractical - Australia’s largest crossborder urban area with 60,000 Gold Coasters on the Tweed side - But they did it anyway. Twice. However for ACT there would be a big challenge in finding/diverting police resources.

Not sure if others noticed that the Queensland land borders become hard to NSW, meaning that from 8th August returning residents cannot drive back to Queensland, but have to fly so they can better enforce the hotel quarantine requirement.
I thought I heard that too, but not supported by today’s Qld Border Declaration (the 10th:rolleyes:) or by the updated Qld pages. Wondering now if I confused it with NSW banning returnees from Vic from arriving by land.

cheers skip

Yes, the new hotspot declaration starts 1 am Sat. However, to bring in a “no drive” border, which I queried, Qld would need to change the new border direction - wait, that one is a week old.

BTW They can’t hotspot all of NSW, as they said they would, and exempt cross border travel, unless they put out another direction, so it may become clearer tomorrow.

I think they mentioned an X-Pass for cross border and a F-pass for everything else.

I posted an article I think last night where apparently a Qld driving back (in presumably a Qld registered car) was passed through without a check. They came back from Melbourne and were meant to go into quarantine. Qld police at their finest......sigh

My bad on the border direction No 10. While the page was updated yesterday, the direction was a week old. This explains why the NSW Border Relations guy was awaiting the detail last night.

Should be an epic jam at Tugun today.

Edit follow up : I was quite concerned that students are told to self exclude from campus without knowing whether the residences are included in that and that they may be asked to leave the residence wondering where they’re supposed to take themselves off to.
The information on the ANU website is uniformative.

I’ve made a couple of phone calls and the switchboard has no idea who handles COVID questions, or any appropriate person available to talk to.

I just hope that this sort of edict from places like universities does not result in people fearing getting tested.
Having had failed attempts at trying to talk to someone I have left a message with the Dean’s office

At the very least they need to clarify this information on their website. COVID-Safe campus

That started yesterday - 4km of traffic backed up!

At least the new 'bubble' for the X-pass goes down as far as Brusnwick Heads.

I hope everyone remembers the 'politic(k)ing' going on during this CV adventure - long after CV (hopefully) is consigned to history (1 chance in 5 & dropping). Where chasing potential votes is more important than the community.

Closing domestic borders - "Disgraceful", "Illegal", "Immoral" = terms used by the Federal Govt early on, and up until 6 weeks ago. More recently with the Fed Govt joining the High Court case against WA's border closure - only dropped (by Fed Govt) in the last week.

Common factor - all crticisms levelled at ALP run states.

I suspect it would be no different though if the ALP were in charge Federally & Lib/Nats at various State levels. Snouts-in-trough syndrome.

Sensibly dealing with border closures - denials of contacts made, then despite contact made a denial of dealing with the request (Gladys re moving NSW/QLD border checking south) & Gladys (moving VIC/NSW border checking south into VIC), etc etc. Not quarantining travellers from another state (with higher CV transmission rates than many overseas countries) while mandatory 14 day 'secured' quarantine for all international arrivals except the rich or connected - mocking reporter who asked the qn the evening before backflip explained by 'medical information changed'.

SImply moving (in reality MUCH more complex) the border checking south in a couple of locations would make a massive difference to around 80,000 people in NSW, 15,000 people in Qld and 18,000 people in VIC. Improving both physical & mental health as well as financial well-being, slash numbers to be checked each day by perhaps 80% or more (especially now perhaps 97%).

What stopped NSW agreeing?

Many possible factors:
  • Politics - painting yourself into a corner/saving face - I said border closures are madness so how can I do anything that makes it easier & less of a problem for Qld....Opens me up to critics within my party...
  • Cost sharing/paying
  • Logistics
  • Legal issues also tied up with costs - who would man the new 'border' checking south of Qld border - NSW police or could Qld police be permitted to do it? Combination? NSW pass bill temporarily authorising Qld police to act in named region solely with power to conduct & control border movements...
If it was solely an issue of cost/benefit to the community then every issue could be swiftly resolved.

Only politics would seem to be the roadblock (no pun intended, just lucky!)

Seven venues in 48 hours: New CBD cluster fears after infectious man has big weekend

A young Sydney man infectious with COVID-19 visited seven restaurants, pubs and a Woolworths within 48 hours, potentially spawning a new coronavirus cluster in the CBD and inner west.

Contact tracers have been unable to identify the source of the man's infection, prompting NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian to urge young people to limit their socialising while the state's COVID-19 defence rested "on a knife's edge".

I'd think some kind of edict to minimise travelling to multiple bars/clubs/restaurants etc might be useful to assist in tracing, particularly for the younger generations.
