Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Whole of NSW makes sense, as the Greater Sydney restriction actually allowed regional areas which had active cases like Albury, Bateman's Bay and Byron Bay to travel to Queensland, whilst Sydney LGAs with zero cases couldnt. Also easier to police since you cant really prove whether someone had been to a hotspot subrb or not.

But ACT is interesting decision given they have no cases. Sure to drive to Queensland they need to go via NSW, but if you fly direct why would there be risk?

You could have driven up the day before as ACT border is open.

Keeping fingers crossed for son on Monday but he could fly out late Friday if they closed to SA but as our borders are pretty much closed unless we spike that will be fine but I think its a zero day today as CHO sounded very relieved this morning. She also commented that our current cluster is related to a particular cultural group who socialise as a family and not attending the usual pubs etc etc which is why the reduction of family group size came into force but football was deemed low risk once the community risk of yesterday tested negative today.

But all your ID would show you are a NSW resident - guess they dont want to do thorough checks. And ACT Chief Minister keeps asking people from NSW not to come to ACT - so probably going to close that border any day now.

It would an unbelievable task to close the border with ACT and NSW - I know they are looking at it but hard to believe they can do it....For a start large numbers of people who work in ACT live in NSW as rates and housing generally are more affordable. For some “NSW” people it is quicker to get to work in the ACT from where they live than if they actually lived in Canberra. Also Canberra Hospital services the greater area not just Canberra. Same for specialists, imaging etc. I could see a greater Canberra bubble, which took in a chunk of NSW.

There is so much movement between Sydney and Canberra I can totally see why Queensland is lumping us together. We are only 1 family/friend visit away from starting our own clusters.

For many in southern NSW Canberra airport is much closer than Sydney.

Im not suggesting the ACT/NSW borders should be closed, I just get the vibe it is a real possibility from the ACT side, but the way their Chief Minister was talking yesterday, I know Gladys wont close it. as not a threat to NSW the way Vic is right now.

Also Anna P has just clarified the reason for closing border to ACT is because a returning Queenslander drove from a NSW hotspot to Canberra to fly to BNE and then connect to CNS to by-pass quarantine. It is interesting that the most publicised breaches or loopholes for entry into Queensland seem to be coming from returning residents not tourists trying to avoid hotel quarantine i.e. the 3 Melbourne Shoplifters, the Kabul not-consular staff and now this guy. And even those doing the right thing, like the couple who has been to the Apollo were also returning residents. Have yet to read of a single case where a NSW resident brought Covid to Qld since the borders reopened on July-10.

I agree that closing the ACT border is totally impractical.

Unless perhaps there is a total lockdown and everybody is kept to their residence.

Canberra has had a task force looking at feasibility - I think they announced that at least a week ago, but I just can’t see how they can do it. If we could negotiate some sort of bubble that took in Queanbeyan and Yass and a few other bits, maybe. Anyway we will see - I don’t see us doing that unless NSW cases grow more.

At least NSW Opposition making some sense, probably 4 weeks too late.....

The Vic permit system looks ripe for fraud........

Not sure if others noticed that the Queensland land borders become hard to NSW, meaning that from 8th August returning residents cannot drive back to Queensland, but have to fly so they can better enforce the hotel quarantine requirement. Only freight and border town residents will have exemptions to cross land border come the 8th.

Are the ACT Police actually the AFP?

They would do it if asked, but doubt they would be too happy doing it

Thanks. I note there were two of them in Vic before today (and the feds etc have 3 deputy positions) .

Allen Cheng seems to have the right credentials to join the team (and he calls himself Prof - because he is - at Monash Uni)

The reason why I asked about the title 'professor' is why they still use it if they are now working for the DPRV Department of Health, not the university. Or is the DoH position on secondment from the university?

I agree it’s going to be hard, but if they don’t the spread through NSW will eventually unfortunately by default swallow up the ACT too.

A sugestion for store owners if they want masks worn in their store.

The head doctor for the Australian Ironman Triathlon (when based at Forster Tuncurry) each year would plea with athletes NOT to be more stupid than normal, after all in his opinion doing an Ironman was pretty stupid in the first place.

Begging you not to 'miss taking fluid at an aid station as it might cost you 10 seconds', otherwise the first thing we do when you arrive at our tent triage is take your temperature with a rectal thermometer.

Then two of his colleagues would carry it onto the stage....

Along those lines, how's this for a straight talking country leader telling it like it is.

BE WARNED strong Scottish accent & language used....

Anyone left in any doubt after seeing/hearing that?

I understood people who have ever been a Professor are entitled to use it (a bit like retired servicemen used to keep their Cols and Majs). Its considered poor form to do so if you have just had a visiting Professorship overseas
The vast majority of medical Profs have cross appointments between University and their clinical job
