Who died
I know you mean well, but with"hardcore" anti-vaxxers (or perhaps anti-covid vaxxers) such information is unlikely to tilt the balance. And perhaps ironically the higher educated they are the harder they are to convince otherwise. I guess they feel they have a special insight/knowledge.

There is no ‘discussion’ to be had with people who believe these alternate truths. Education and knowledge is not the issue. Why work in health care ? Never been to a hospital that’s not stacked w pharmaceuticals. Hopefully she’ll avoid the Ivermectin.
That's the irony isn't it? Should have chosen a non science related career

A nice financial stick will sort 7/10 of them trust me. Honestly they appear to be much bigger than they are. We really shouldn’t give them oxygen.

The only real worry I have is the religious anti vaxxers that have infiltrated the indigenous community so well :( Unfortunately we are going to see many preventable deaths there…

Sorry but Therecwas not an outbreak at the time so the evidence wasn't false. You forget the rest of my answer.there were many people hyping the risk of AZ and that wasn't from ATAGI.
The PM pushing ATAGI to change it's advice was political spin. The change was already being discussed .He knew what the answer would be.
And the quote is in many media articles because that is the answer that the media was.I haven't yet seen the question that elicited that response.

The interview is here

As I’ve been saying, their failure was in underestimating the risks - this interview was after the Sydney outbreak had started and they were already in a late lockdown. and yet he still didn’t think under 40s should be getting AZ.

We’re going around in circles here and you have personal connections to ATAGI so I’m clearly not going to get a concession from you. But I think history speaks for itself and I’m sure many in ATAGI regret the position we’re in.

Definitely a non trivial problem....

Well the financial stick doesn't worry the less affluent "hardcore" and the more affluent "hardcore" couldn't care less. And given the PM has said its not mandatory, not sure how the "civil liberties" wing will allow such a financial stick to pass our current legislature.

I ventured into Twitter tonight. It was exhausting. There seems to be really 3 factions with a bit of spread between them.
The first is the open up now, we are exaggerating the seriousness of the illness and downplaying the effects on society of our current strategy group. They by and large are accepting that adopting their pathway will affect the unvaccinated (all of them regardless of age or medical contraindications). The chronically ill, elderly and disabled are low hanging fruit who will die anyway but that’s accepted in this model.

The second group is on the opposite end of the spectrum. They are zero covid, let’s drive down the cases to zero, keep it there. They believe that the current policy direction in NSW particularly and the Feds in general is wrong. Strategies include stringent lockdowns, mass vaccination including all children and an overhaul of all indoor ventilation everywhere (not clear how this will be implemented). Release once everyone is vaccinated and stringent TTIQ can be maintained.
They are probably just as zealous if not more than the first group and there are a large amount of prominent vocal medics amongst them.
The middle group (that’s me) isn’t really well represented.
I think I’ll stay off Twitter 🤦🏼‍♀️

I'm not much on Twitter, but this reflects things off Twitter as well. I'm not in Team Zero, or Team Let it Rip. I have found Team Zero the most difficult to debate with, as they instantly accuse me of being in Team Let it Rip for just suggesting that we need to figure out how to live with it.

Fortunately I am firmly in my own Team "Slightly Bonkers"

I am definitely in the middle ground camp and we have to find an acceptable level.

After a long weekend and reduced reporting figures (I think the 207 is a catch up after a couple of lower reporting days.) things are catching up in the UK. Australia needs to understand that there will be hospitalisations and deaths at 80% vaccination rates - it is all about acceptability.

Well what I got out of that interview was different to you.At one stage he says tghat is not to say that AZ is banned in younger age groups and people should talk to their GP.That advice is repeated later on.
You do like the retrospectoscope now.You are saying they underestimated the risk at that point in time which is not true unless you had a crystal ball.Since the number of cases expanded dramatically just after that interview they reassessed risk and gave the green light to more AZ use.

Again they are an advisory group not a policy making group.

That's the same in Reddit land! Can't even talk about acceptable number of deaths to open up.

Twitter output confirms the spread of participants. Sure it may have some use in getting messages out quickly, but only to a relatively small slice of the population. Every time I hear someone say "it's trending" I think only amongst a very small slice of the earth's inhabitants. Those that say twitter is a sewer are not far wrong when it comes to a review of the content.

Again, you’d be amazed how quickly these people jab for policies like no jab no play including the affluent. It’s not about making it mandatory, you don’t need to. We see it every single day on the coal face.

You just make life annoying enough for those who choose not to get vaccinated by a series of ‘no problems but you can’t do x or won’t receive y, can’t go to z’ and most will fold. And remember it’s not just the Feds, states and businesses can do this too.

There's no real middle allowed on twitter.

To post a "see both sides" view point is to immediately be set upon by "both sides" as encouraging the "other" side.

Not worth it.

Sounds like Twitter on any issue…. only the extremes can be bothered contributing and the people typing are usually fat nobodies without a life and won’t put their own name to anything :)

Confront them in real life and 99.99% of them, from both sides would probably scuttle away and do as they are told. I don’t even bother reading anything there either so good decision!

Yes. She feels that the long term impacts of vaccination are not known and that she would rather risk COVID as a “healthy 60 year old” than take that risk. She says we should put more effort into treatments rather than making people get vaccinated. She is particularly concerned about mRNA vaccination. She is very influenced by the idea that vaccines are a Big Pharma Conspiracy and quotes a lot of alternative fact doctors and scientists.

And she also is very strong about “bodily sovereignty”.

I’m so surprised. We have been friends for 25 years and I would never have guessed this. Although she did refuse to have a whooping cough booster last year when a grandchild arrived. That was solved by lockdown preventing her travelling interstate to meet the little one until the baby had received its own 2, 4, 6 month shots.
I have a low tolerance for idiots.

There is a middle-aged lady who lives nearby who I have helped with IT issues occasionally. A few weeks ago we were both queueing for coffee at the local cafe when she mentioned she wasn't going to get vaccinated for reasons she couldn't really explain. I told her it is too late to put your seat belt on when you have just been thrown through the car window. She said the vaccine situation was different as she doesn't even own a car (what???).

So I told her next time she has an IT problem, find somebody else. I mean it.

The estimate of Vic case numbers is up for anyone that wants to see it.

As mentioned on other days it is an estimate from the VicDHHS of the likely number to a journalist, and not a leak. They are as on past days still validating the numbers which can go up or down after checking.

The risk from covid at the time was low so they didn't miscalculate.

See, I would say that if they calculated the risks from Covid were low, then there is the miscalculation right there. It was always going to come to Australia and repeatedly here I stated the case that if you have already developed the vaccine then it's a preventive thing. Kids are vaccinated preventively almost from birth.

More police officers hurt after the over 75 anti-lockdown protests in NSW yesterday… sigh… if only all these hundreds of protesters turned their efforts to getting people vaccinated they wouldn’t need to protest in the first place…

Unfortunately these people don’t appear to be giving up…
