Overnight Transit at HKG airport

I will have a few overnight transits at HKG airport in the next few weeks. On one of these transits I have decided I will stay at HKG airport for ~10 hours as I don't want to go into Hong Kong and airport accommodation is too pricey that night.

I have been to HKG airport a number of times but can't for the life of me think if there is anything to do at that time of the night or does everything close down?

If I can get my boarding passes for the next day's flights earlier in the day I may be able to spend sometime in one of the CX lounges that does not close until after midnight. I think both lounges open early in the morning so hopefully may only need to kill a couple of hours.

Any thoughts?

I was in Hong Kong for less than 10 hours and I stayed at this hotel. Novotel Hong Kong Citygate

It is about 10 minutes by shuttle bus from the airport, the shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes or so.

The first shuttle bus in the morning is at 6:00am

I have looked at both the Marriott (AUD160+) and Novotel (AUD200+) and simply do not want to waste that much money for ~10 hours transit.

I think they have "relaxation rooms" in the airport, looked like couches you could lie back in for some ZZZZ..

The Wing opens earlier than The Pier lounge. I think The Wing opens at or maybe even before 5am. The Pier does not open until 7am.

From memory, the Wing closes around 1am. So you may have up to 4 hours to "entertain" yourself.

But be aware that at HKG they are pretty strict with checking boarding passes to get airside. Even when arriving and in-transit they check you have a valid boarding pass against your passport. So they may stop you going through the transit checkpoint when your onward boarding pass has the following day's date on it. Same may happen if you go through arrivals immigration and then head to go back airside the day before your departure. Obviously they would need to allow people on a 12:30am or 1:00am flight through, so not sure what criteria they use for ensuring the boarding pass is accepted.

I am fairly certain I will have boarding pass for next day's 8:00am flight so will need to find a way to get back airside. No big deal if I end up landside for a few hours but would be nice to stay 'in-transit'.

Try this, $50 a night, very clean and close to airport - i think 1 stop from Airport Exp.

That is the one. I am due to arrive at 10pm so that may do the trick until midnight.

I have been looking at Rambler Oasis Hotel and it is 1 only stop on Airport Express and then a short taxi ride. Total cost (including transport) should be less than AUD100 and I should be able to have 4-5 hours sleep. Thanks hasan27 and welcome to AFF.

Note the last AE departs at 00:48 and it's 13 mins to Tsing Yi - first train from Tsing Yi is 6am.

If to save a few $$$, you might try heading upstairs to the T2 Checkin Area and look for a couch to rest on.

I have been in the same boat as you, but TBH with you all I wanted after disembarking was some sleep, and I felt quite comfortable doing it land side.

So there staying at HKIA is definitely an option

Definitely trying to save some money after all the money I have spent on status runs.

Nice hint. Last time i stayed at the Marriott, but as JohnK has indicated they are not cheap hotels when all you want is a room for a few hours.
No complaints about the hotel though, was nice.

Any hints at what is the quickest and cheapest way to get to Stanford at Kowloon in a couple of hours? Would shuttle be OK or better off getting airport express to Kowloon and then taxi to hotel?

Is there is a big saving in getting an Oyster card?

Take the airport express to Kowloon city then taxi or one of the free hotel buses (come every 10-20 mins).

I think you can buy tourist day pass for unlimited travel on airport express but forget how much. Octopus card will save you money and time if you travel freq. between cities. For a once off visit i wouldnt bother.

Since you are only travelling overnight and need to be at the airport early, a basic Airport Express return will do the trick.

HKD160 for return ticket to/from Kowloon, 20 mins each way on the train and it runs every 12 minutes.

+1 for this option JohnK. by far easiest and relatively cheap. Sure, not as cheap as the bus, but HEAPS faster.

Unfortunately I missed this as did not get to Kowloon until ~11:15pm and they were making announcements no more shuttle buses. Anyway Taxi was only HKD35 last night and HKG30 this morning.

I am glad I stayed in the hotel and not overnight at the airport as I was dead tired and managed a solid 4.5 hours sleep. Used in-town check-in at Kowloon and was at the airport with first Airport Express train in the morning.
