Overnight Transit at HKG airport

I have another overnight transit in HKG early October and thinking about staying at the airport instead of going into town. I arrive at 21:00 and depart at 08:55. I would think the luggage should be able to be checked through and I will have a boarding pass for onward flights.

From the CX the website the Wing opens at 5:30am and closes after the last flight of the night. The Pier opens at 6:00am and closes at 11:30pm.

I believe the last flight is 02:45am to YVR or YYZ which means I will only need to be in the terminal for ~3 hours while the lounges are closed?

Has anyone else stayed at HKG airport and more specifically in the lounges on an overnight transit?

See this FT thread; there's some interesting posting in it.
Indeed some interesting information.

At least it guarantees lounge access until 2:30am and if I get booted out I only have to wait until 5:30am.

Other than cost..... why not stay at Novotel Citigate, it's a lovely new hotel, reasonably priced, and convenient. Sorry if I've missed something.

Cost is the only reason.

Novotel Citigate would be ~AUD170/night plus costs to get there. My usual hotels (Dorsett Kowloon and Oriental Lander) are ~AUD80/night but then it would cost ~AUD40 to get there and back.

Sleep is not that important as I will be able to sleep on the CX business class flight HKG-BKK-SIN then next day and would rather save the ~AUD120 (or more) for next holiday.

I must admit I hadn't checked the price, last time I paid around $120 (I did book well in advance though), but if you are happy to wait for sleep on the plane, then it makes more sense.

Wotif has it for ~AUD190 on the night I want.

Believe me if it was not for the lounge access there is no way I would wait around the airport all night. But then again the money is also important.

There is not cost to get there. They have a free shuttle bus. Just walk up to the Novotel desk and they will make sure the bus driver collects you for the shuttle. Same for Marriott.

These are the times I use hotel points for accommodation. Mrs NM and I stayed at the Marriott at HKG last year on an overnight transit. Even on points and with no status they have us a suit - it may have helped that I included it was our 20th anniversary in the "other information" field for the on-line booking .

I had an overnight transit (~12 hours) at Hong Kong recently. Instead of hanging around the airport I thought about two options:

1. Leave airport, head to the Peak for a look, then spend a few hours in bars and head back to Airport.
2. Leave airport, head to Macau, spend time there and return.

I decided on #2, although headed to Macau from town rather than HKG Airport - Macau. Landed in Hong Kong around 8:30pm. Caught a bus to the Macau ferry terminal and was in Macau around 11pm.

Spent time in a few casinos people watching (and doing a bit of gambling). Met some lovely ladies who wanted to get to know me better (lol. the joys of Asia). Wandered through Macau for a while (felt pretty safe), and was on a 4am ferry back to Hong Kong. Arrived about 5am, did immi etc, then crossed road and grabbed a bus back to the airport to arrive about 6:30am.

Cathay lounge for brekkie. Qantas F lounge for a shower (queue was too long in Cathay lounge). Then onto next flight.

An option if you're ok with staying awake overnight... (And yes, I realise JohnK's post was ages ago, but more suggesting an alternative for anyone else reading this thread).

Fantastic information there Mal, thanks for sharing. I've a overnight connection coming up shortly in HKG and your suggestion above sounds great.

You are of course right. When I looked at wotif earlier and saw the rate was ~AUD190 it included the cost of the shuttle.

If I had someone with me I would do the same thing as you. I have heaps of Priority Club points but I just do not see the point of going into HKG getting to sleep around midnight and then getting up at 5:00am to head back out to the airport.

I can forego the luxuries of a comfortable bed for 1 night.

And of course the closest PC property is Kowloon, which adds cost and time. That is why I used my Marriott points for the HKG transit. More convenient and no transfer cost. But I don't have many Marriott points left now since I cleared out the account when AA had their bonus for hotels points transfers to AAdvantage miles.
