Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

There was a snippet on the news tonight with the PM saying there will still be people who remain unvaccinated, including those who choose not to be vaccinated, and medical experts are going to have to weigh up the risks of opening borders for those people.
Or we just send those that refuse to be vaccinated to the middle to the middle of nowhere where they start their own colony. 😝
If the various governments were serious about it they have many levers they can pull to make vaccinations mandatory ie no entry to restaurants, domestic flights or cut off dole payments

‘We need a plan’: Victoria, NSW want vaccine targets linked to borders reopening

State governments and health experts have insisted the federal government spell out clearly how the vaccine rollout relates to the reopening of international borders as Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Sunday urged caution in the face of global outbreaks.

Acting Premier James Merlino said Australia could begin winding back restrictions once a greater proportion of the population had been vaccinated, agreeing with Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton that we could no longer act as “Fortress Australia”.

Let's just pick a state we all care about least and ship all the anti-vaxxers there.. or the northern NSW coast could be sectioned off.

I think the best way would be to deny vaccine refuseniks access to Medicare benefits.

yeah, but only if they don;t have COVID at the time - if you are a sick Aussie in a country with an overwhelmed health system, then stuff you (says the Australian Government).
This has been the case for ever - just think about all those Aussies travelling overseas who would have loved the Govt to jump in and bail them out when they fell ill (whatever the cause) because they weren't covered by travel insurance.

This sounds good, until you get into the numbers of people who won't get it or won't treat it as something they need to do as soon as it is available to them. If the opening of borders requires a high uptake of vaccines - what is being done to "encourage" swift uptake when available?

Not quite that simple bearing in mind long covid.
Superficially, it seems that the odds of long covid drop significantly with the vaccine - in other words, the illness is less severe so less chances of long covid. A whole bunch of NY Yankees and trainers who are vaccinated all just got covid - but they only knew from testing - no one seems to have actually fallen ill.

Just to resume some normalcy in the news

5 million people in NSW. That will take like 2 years at this rate
That is ignoring that steps are being taken to speed up the rollout. It is wrong to assume that the rollout will continue at the pace it's been done at in recent weeks.

I'm sure the Feds are doing everything they can to see if vaccines can be obtained sooner than anticipated.

Also is the Premier talking about the first steps to partially reopen or when things can go to some kind of a new normal where if you're vaccinated and test negative on arrival you can immediately stop isolating?

I want to believe they will start getting more supply and thus have the potential to ramp up the vaccine rate - however, this requires a significant number of people to be willing to do so, and I'm simply not convinced there will be. I've had my first AZ, in a few weeks I will get my 2nd...now I am waiting so that I can visit my USA-based parents/extended family.

Yes that's true, but for example there have been medevac flights for people caught in natural disasters or terrorism - the Aceh Tsunami and the Bali bombings being two that spring to mind.

I think that being a sick Aussie in India in COVID times is more like that situation (disaster/terrorism) than like being caught out overseas without travel insurance, as you mention. And it's not just one or two individuals being ill/injured at a time/place when the local medical system (even if not great) was able to cope with their illness/injury, it's swathes of people in systems that cannot cope - which I'm pretty sure was the logic for using ADF and other medevac services in the cases I mentioned.

Meanwhile, several major media websites are leading with the story that one person who arrived from the India into hotel quarantine has tested positive. Oh my goodness, the sky is falling. (you'll have to take my word for it, I am not going to condone such coverage by adding links).

Isn't the whole point of quarantine is that there's a high likelihood that a small number of arriving travellers may have the virus? And that pre-flight testing aims to reduce the risk rather than eliminate altogether?

Good old clickbait journalism!

They need a scare tactic to get a lot of the population to pull there finger out. Once elected October/November, Scomo leaves it to Feb 2022, then gives a deadline of 30/6/2022 then borders open for all vaccinated in and out, with no quarantine (unless maybe known red zones).
