Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Interesting, both the same score on the same date, my wrong guess.
You got the Clarendon Hills! That's a tough guess to start with.
Apparently Hickinbotham is only 10m away from the Clarendon vineyard.
Clarendon is the cooler side so apparently different expression.

Friends - looking for to buy a couple of bottles (one for my partner & I and one for the rest of the fam) of Shiraz for a social distanced birthday celebration. You can guess which state I live in!

Bottles of $50-$100 are not my forte. My "nicer" bottles are usually ones I've scored for around $25-$30 on sale, I usually lean towards a Barossa/Mclaren Vale Shiraz, but also don't mind a really good cooler climate Shiraz.

Tough question because I know it's taste based - any recommendations for a Shiraz in the $50-$100/bottle mark? I've looked at the usual suspects. St Henri, Meschach etc. Obviously ratings are high across the board, so thought I'd ask for personal recommendations here.

Example of my fav current Shiraz = Gibson Dirtman (which FYI is still $19.95 at Kemeny's as a secret label. Just ordered another bundle).

TIA :)

Never had the dirtman.

You will be hard pressed to find a rockford basket press so outside of that.

I think the Kalleske Eduard Old Vine shiraz is a ripper - $85 typically.
Otherwise a nice Dalwhinnie Moonamble Shiraz is great - should be about $50

There's still a few Meshach and Eileen Hardys kicking around BWS stores for half price, so depending on where you are that could be an option? The Meshach I've seen in stores are 2010, 2012, 2013 so drinkable now...
but to answer specifically, I had a Mollydooker Carnival of Love a few weeks back and found it a bit flat. Other things to consider that I like are the St Henri, or maybe a Langi Shiraz.

The trick is to fill up the cart before the promotion hits, read the T&Cs, and make sure there's no Penfolds/Champagne conditions. Then its a somewhat worthwhile deal.

Thanks for the tip! Guess it's not too devastating this time given I still need to work through my last purchase. Given how regular CM seems to have these 20%+ CR/SBs, the timing will probably be just right when it comes.

Seppelt St. Peters Grampians Shiraz 2017&18
$58 (rrp$80) at cellardoor.co
One of my fav wines, hard to find at a larger discount (please prove me wrong), this might be cellardoor's usual discounted price. Apologies for typeset size, phone operator issue.

Thanks all for the advice. I ended up grabbing 2 x 2016 Sorby Adams 'The Thing' Shiraz.

DM under wraps for $72.90 each (RRP $150) - https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_MYSTERY205/under-wraps-barossa-shiraz-2016

Had a recommendation from a friend who has very similar tastes to me, and reviews seem to be consistently very positive (even if its SK with the 97 pts), and indicate it's appropriate for drinking now.

Also comes in a very nicely presented and heavy (1.2kg) bottle. This means nothing to me, but it will impress my parents who are not huge wine drinkers.

This was $50 back in March.

IMHO the Sorby Adams The Revetend Canon is a better wine.

I think this is the normal discount price at CD.co - has frequently been dropped to $55 in the past - not that $3/b is substantial

I feel like sometimes I/we get very caught up in the 'P' in PQR. Everyone wants to get an amazing wine at the best possible price.

I liken it to wanting to always sell shares at the top and buy at the bottom. Worth taking a step back sometimes and thinking "Is this wine worth the price I am paying"? Regardless of RRP or the fact that it was cheaper a few months ago.

It's a bit like the whole discussion re: Curtis wines. Ridiculous RRP compared to the average price people pay..no arguments there.
But am I happy paying $20 for a Curtis Cavaliere? Yeah probably. It's a pretty good wine.

Just like I hope the Sorby Adams is a great wine and worth $72, and will try not to focus on the fact that it was cheaper recently and probably not sold at the RRP that often.

Does feel like it's the thrill of the chase for a great bargain more so than getting great wine sometimes!

I know this isn't OzBargain, but I hate paying too much for wine or more than I had to. Price is very important to me. But then again I love a bargain.

The Sorry Adams was good value when less than $50 and I bought a lot at that price (wish I'd bought more as these have made great gifts). I wouldn't pay more for it. But I appreciate others may be happy to do so. And this is obviously what Dan Murphy's is thinking will occur.

And just FYI, the Curtis is bad even at $20 in my view. As has been indicated already my other AFF members 'Curtis cannot be trusted'.
