Upgrade a CX reward on an existing PNR

Is this correct advice from QF or a HUACA .... I have a J CX reward CBR-HKG-JFK which has a very long transit in HKG, booked via QF.

I saw an F seat on CX with a much shorter connection and wanted to upgrade to that in the same PNR on the same date.

QF said CX wouldn’t do it as all CX see was a married segment breach.

I already have a booking, so does this sound correct? Thanks for any advice.

This could be correct. Married segments would be for the SYD-HKG-JFK and availability would need to be for both flights in order for you to change the HKG-JFK. If the SYD (or wherever you are flying via) has availability right through then you should be able to change it. If the QF connector is causing the problem you could drop it and get a separate award or paid ticket.

I have first on all the international legs except SYD to Tokyo ...which is a Qantas leg.
If there was first seat available (don't know if there is first on Syd to HND ) could it be updated ?

Connecting from QF to CX should be ok in principle. Married segments are generally within one airline.

No F for BNE (HKG) - JFK. So, I’ll try to find a day rate at HKG hotel airport.

This could be correct. Married segments would be for the SYD-HKG-JFK and availability would need to be for both flights in order for you to change the HKG-JFK. If the SYD (or wherever you are flying via) has availability right through then you should be able to change it. If the QF connector is causing the problem you could drop it and get a separate award or paid ticket.

It may be that the married segment rule being applied for your new HKG-JFK (in F) doesn't allow travel from BNE (restricted), or even any Aussie port. Or it might allow travel from SYD or MEL etc.

Alternatively if all Australia is off the list it might only be allowed for travel from somewhere in Asia. It all depends how CX is maximising its revenue to restrict the HKG-JFK.

You could check MEL-HKG-JFK and see if that's available for example, then change your CBR flight accordingly. Or see if SIN-HKG-JFK and fly QF to SIN.

Thanks, I’ll have a look for other award availability but I don’t think I’ll get that lucky to find anything else.

UPDATE: To recap, QF told me I couldn't change my J seat to F on the same sector and same date for a better connection HKG-JFK. I had a knowledgeable, patient and sympathetic agent and I just said I was disappointed and gave up.

Looking at my bkg today to check seats, I see although I am still on the same flights, I have been given F and have seat 1A to prove it. Yippee, that's 16 hours in F instead of J, and access to The Pier. I hope it bloody well sticks. Anyone had that before - that agent must have changed it?

How far away is the flight and was the award re-priced to reflect F? (If the flight is close in it may be that you have been op-uped.)

It would be odd for the agent to change it if there was an additional cost involved without first consulting you (because if you didn't agree they could have a hard time putting you back in your original cabin).

Yes, that’s what QF said, that it would’ve been allowable on QF, but not CX due to the married segments.

You might want to investigate this with QF. If the seat hasn't been paid for it really depends if your ticket has been reissued in the correct class for award F. If it hasn't, CX may auto-cancel an 'unpaid' ticket - especially since they have so many of the Vietnam mistake fares at play (ie, they may need every seat they can get in F).

Trying to 'get back' a J award seat if this has been an error could take some time and better to get it sorted out now rather than later when there might be no seats - including your original - left (QF can't force CX to convert revenue to award seats).

A quick call should be able to sort it out

Even if you were originally booked in F, that doesn't solve the married segment issue. The only flight CX is allowing for award travel is the HKG-JFK flight you are now on.

However, close in to departure (starting from about 2 weeks out, but particularly 7 days and again 2-3 days before departure) CX usually opens up their F cabins and will convert just about everything left over to award availability.

At that time the married segments may change or be removed, opening up more options for you (including the shorter connection).
