Vinomofo Wine Deals

Tasting notes on this high priced one are due to follow. On one side, we have Dr Ralph with his thoughtful, insightful comments about the wine. Do we all have short term memories about Mitolo? Can they redeem themselves with a wine brought out from the vaults? Crickey, it's mummified but that's what the punters want. An eleven year old, a bit like ..oops, nearly got carried away, but so much maturity for a shiraz? I was actually thinking of Bill Wyman for all those music afficianados out there, but was three years too early. Sick man that Bill.

We all await the taste test from folks who got on board, like the Warlock above, his mate, and AC.

It has 62 tasting notes on CellarTracker, with an average rating of 91.3 (i.e. it isn't just the opinion of 3-4 people), which tipped me into buying. Mitolo have a long track record of producing good stuff (plus some duds). 2005 was a decent year for SA reds, so hoping this is good, rather than a dud!

Re: mof_ SECRET DEAL Riesling 2013

Hi All - Hardly shut my front door when a cheerful chap placed the Mandala Prophet Pinot & Miss Harry GSM in my hands, well on the floor. The Mandala is a beaut, so smooth & complex, probably at its peak - YUM. I've always enjoyed Miss Harry, but this one is dominated by the shiraz component, not bad but ... I can still taste the pepper

Re: mof_ SECRET DEAL Riesling 2013

Just confirming that this is the Pertaringa over the top shiraz. My case arrived. McLaren Vale Shiraz 2014. $40 down to $18

I breathed a sigh of relief a couple of weeks ago when the latest Think Outside the Circle post included "last few cases" knowing that vile swill was about to drop off. Yet due to the delights of modern marketing, sure enough, "it's back!"

Yes Vedder, this one goes into the Hall of Shame alongside the Mitolo Cantiniere. Folks, anyone else share some Fo doozies that promised oh, so soooo much, yet not only undelivered ( which is partially acceptable) , but were actually atrocious. I realize the subjectivity here in wine tasting, but there will be more that I fortunately passed on.

I thought the Better Half Pinot was awful.

I think a few people did because I unfortunatly ended up with three bottles of it in a salvation case I ordered!

I agree, the Better Half Pinot was not great, but it was drinkable.

For me, my only outright failure has been the recent purchase of the Spinifex Bete Noir Shiraz. For me there was just too much of an iodised salinity on the front palate, that I just couldn't get past. Although the mid and back palate were very nice. It just reminded me too much of the Wolf Blass Grey Label shiraz that I poured down the drain the week before. Just undrinkable for me. That's two bottles down the sink in the same week, and that's after having not poured a bottle of wine down the sink in over a decade!

Some have suggested that the Spinifex may have just been a tainted bottle. Unfortunately I will never know, as I have just exercised the Fo's generous returns policy.

You are allowed to sample two in a case and then return the remaining 10 I believe. I have just remembered a very near miss to the Shame File, one Tomich "Winemakers Reserve" Pinot expressing the best that they could do. The I-777 was unbelievably stunning but this wretched pale imitation was sent back.

I was about to say the same thing Bee. I have had two from a case and returned without an issue ( I do buy 30+ cases a year though). I didn't find that at all with the Spinifex DB. And none of the tasting notes mention anything like that either. Wouldn't this ring some alarm bells, esp if you found it bad enough to pour it down the sink?? Maybe your taste buds were having an off day, or the bottle was tainted? That would be my first thought, esp with a wine with such positive reviews such as this one, rather than the wine is rubbish.

Yes, that's entirely possible, but I can only report my experience. I never said the wine was rubbish, only that for me it was a failure. I'm not suggesting that others won't enjoy that particular flavour profile, but it wasn't for me. Yes it is possible that it was tainted, but I have never experienced tainted flavours in that spectrum before. And as I mentioned, the mid and back palate were beautiful, there was no hint of taint there. It was just the front palate where I took exception. Unfortunately I wasn't willing to risk a second bottle, as I would then be unable to return the rest (I only bought 6).

I'm not a "returner" as I think I should accept responsibility for my judgement .. or lack thereof…...
Deciding to return after two corky's in my dozen , I was told that I would only get a credit for 10.
I protested that this was somewhat unfair , given my purchases -v- returns record and subsequently received a credit for the 12.
Maybe it's a moveable feast ?

Aaaannnnd a bit ot , but failing to see any more Chaffey Bros Tessellation Riesling in the 'fo's recent offerings, I checked out Chaffey's (very funky) website.
They have a 6 pack taster on limited offer for $130 posted, I have only tasted two so far but have ordered a second pack……..

That iodized taste is something that I have to chase up with a wine I bought a few years ago directly. Trifon estate Reserve Cabernet 2012 I think it was, a six pack. All have had iodine reaking thru them. As a wine fault, this is a real rarity. Reson for purchase was that it won a trophy in a Victoria show, hence my interest. I've been sitting on this one for ages now, but my rapport with them was good. Their shiraz was good, their tempranilo was good. I think initially I bought thru Grays. This iodine nose permeates all and reminded me of an old antiseptic liquig called TCP....which was I think tri chloro phenol or at least damn close. Dettol would smell better ! Ah also DB, till you followed up with the Shotfire review, I had thought it was the 02. That 2002 was drinking well last year as per notes. And I just picked up the 2013's.

So this answered my question. I uhhmd and ahhdd about the Redman Shiraz, bit the bullet and they turned up today. 2012 I thought, a little bit of age should be good, and how quaint, a cork! Noticed the ullage is quite low already though, opened up the first bottle and remembered why people stopped using corks. Horrible. The second bottle is not much better. So If I try a third does that mean all bets are off and I need to keep them? The worst part is that I signed up two new members and they both bought a dozen of these, it won't be a great first experience if mine are anything to go by (unlike *my* first buy which was a 2006 Warramate Cabernet, and superb for ~$10 per bottle...
