Vinomofo Wine Deals

Re: mof_ SECRET DEAL Riesling 2013

IIRC just received my 3rd VIM invite ... nothing much that inviting.

Pretty sure Ned and Henry. Scored 92 on TWF but only 83 with HH. I've got some from last time it was on. The Mourvedre really takes over. Struggle to taste the shiraz. I wouldn't give it 96 but certainly better than 83. I'd prob go with TWF review.

Ordered this blind for the heck of it. Agree it tasted too much mourvedre, and was initially quite put off by it. Pulled it back out from the fridge after 2 days, the shiraz came through much more, tasted better, and reminds me of the Maverick GSM.

But maybe I'm just not used to this blend. In two minds about returning it, so would appreciate any notes from more experienced tongues. :)

A shiraz mourvedre is bound to be unlike a GSM (especially with GSMs being often 50%+ grenache). Personally I'm not generally a fan of grenache and (based on my limited experience of a couple of vintages of Teusner's Dog Strangler and one or two others) I'm a bit partial to mourvedre even straight, so that objection doesn't put me off at all. In that sense, I'm not sure what advice others could give you, except perhaps on how it might be expected to change over time in the cellar. It's probably not wise to allow anyone else to influence your thinking on whether something is delicious or not. They might for example be a lover of blue cheese, and you not, or vice versa. Why would you trust such a flawed tongue? ;)

Edit: I'll just add, I have tried one Ned & Henry's, the 2010, and my impressions of it were very positive. If this were that vintage on offer I'd have been all over it. But a dozen is a big commitment for something you've never tried, and it's a shame when it doesn't work out. The returns policy is good, or you could ask on the share-a-case thread if anyone wanted to take some of them off your hands at cost, if you'd like to hang on to a couple but not all of them.

Last year I bought some Mandala Yarra Valley Pinot Noir (2013), and it polarized me and my partner (she thought it was too acidic and tannic, I thought it was good in that way, but it wasn't drinking so well on the 2nd day). For those who purchased, Id be interested to get opinions on the 2010 Prophet - has it got the legs?
Cheers!

Any ideas on the 2013 Hilltops Shiraz $30 down to $9? I've looked on here and have done my own research to no avail (how many $30 wines at 13% alcohol can come out of this region?!). Closest match I could find was Chalkers Crossing but doesn't appear they've ever offered this and the alcohol % is not an exact match.

Could be Moppity, as they have dealt with VM a lot in the past.

Looked at Moppity and noticed that they had also offered this before, but neither price or alcohol content matches anything on their site. They've started promoting the 2014 vintage as well, so maybe they just no longer advertise the 2013 and their pricing structure has changed.

There's also no mention of it being a 5-star winery and it appears that most of their wines have garnered significant praise from the experts (from what I read here earlier, Ben Malouf's ratings are to be taken with a grain of salt). It wouldn't be like the fo to not talk these things up.

I'll wait to see if there's any other input, then I might just jump on a case anyway. Too much Cab Sav at the moment, need to replenish my Shiraz stocks.

Now that's something worth knowing about - searched for share-a-case and found it, not many entries though

Interesting.... Can't find too much about them or their wines (certainly no mention of Shiraz or Cab Sav), except they are owned by the same couple that own Moppity. I think I'm going to take a punt.

Thanks mate.
