Details about Philip Hughes injury (Daily Telgraph story):

The fatal blow split one of the main arteries carrying blood to his brain, a devastating and rare injury medically defined as a vertebral artery dissection leading to subarachnoid haemorrhage

With that information it meant he really had no chance of surviving.the vertebral ateries supply the brainstem and the posterior portion of the brain.Basically all the automatic functions are in the brain stem-breathing,pulse and blood pressure. Also being a subarachnoid haemorrhage means cerebral tissue is destroyed.
The more common injury when hit behind the ear is rupture of a meningeal artery causing an extradural haemorrhage. The bleeding is outside the brain so relieving the pressure by removing the blood often results in a good recovery.

And to be honest, life quality probably wouldn't have been that good if he had. My grandma suffered a bleed on the brain after a fall, and they weren't able to operate immediately due to blood thinners she was on. She has a permanent brain injury as a result which has left her in the dementia unit of a nursing home.

Seems our kids both learnt the same technique

Sleeping with children is just about always out of the question. There is a window of about 2.67 months when they are big enough to not worry about rolling over and crushing them, but not big enough to completely take over the bed. Last time we had a child in bed with us, I woke up with a massively sore kidney. Found a head jammed into said kidney, with the legs draped over SWMBO. It seems cute, but it is just a nightmare.

I think they all do it.

minidoc is particularly adept at sliding in between me and mrsdoc then worming his way into a blissfully comfortable position. For him. I usually end up pushed out of bed.

Still work in the city? I thought you'd go towards the regatta from eagle st pier perhaps.

That walk was many years ago, when I was in training. I think I had to do 15 km in 2.5 hours carrying 30 kg or something like that. These days would be about 4 or 5 hours.
Lived in city and worked in Toowong. Still work at the same place but now live in Milton.

Not too long a walk ... used to stay at Auchenflower and often walked to Toowong, the CBD, Suncorp St., Regatta hotel etc. ...

I agree, very rare injury and doesn't often present with the patient unconscious. The poor guy was most likely brain dead very quickly. Tragic stuff.
I guess we don't really know when our numbers up and should live each day accordingly :(

Having lost a cousin in similar circumstances 7 months ago (hit by a car, had to turn life support off), this just re-enforces the saying Carpe Diem to me.

It's a 30 minute walk for me made a little more difficult with a very sore foot.

Hope the lifts are working again. Don't fancy walking up 320 steps and then back down again in ~3 hours.

Well at work but we have no lights - at least power is working for computers and air-conditioning. Natural light is enough for work to continue. My 2 female staff are having to use the male toilet (lucky we keep it clean), as water came through their toilets' light fitting. Call has gone out to the maintenance people and awaiting sparkie to confirm it's alright to turn on again.

Bucketing down again.

Just as well I only need to work for ~3 hours today. I'll head off to airport early and see if I can get earlier flight.

Hopefully scheduling will have put the right planes in the right places by then JohnK. I presume there were a couple of cancellations and a lot of diversions into/out of BNE last night.

James Street, Fortitude Valley is awash with green waste (between McLaughlin and Robertson) and the blowers are out in force cleaning up.

Wonder whether his organs were donated or not....
