I rang the premium hotline to find out why all the first two rows in economy on my domestic QF flights were blocked out and unable to be pre-selected. As a WP I have pre-booked rows 4 and 5 as recently as December. The consultant informed me that these rows are now blocked off for Chairmans Club and Platinum Ones. The consultant stated that this has been in vogue for several months but I do not believe this is correct. Anyone else had this experience lately?

Has been the case for a very long time. Wait until -80hrs before your flight departs and a 'different' system takes over the seating allocation and has more options.

Yep been that way for a few years now. T-80 is your friend.

It's disappointing as a WP (QANTAS's status that comes with OWE - highest OneWorld status level) that's highly unlikely to ever reach P1 to not be able to pick any seat you like from the plane but I understand why they do this.

If you try to avoid flying in peak times of the day or week then you've got a decent chance of being able to select a front row seat at T-80 if you're travelling solo.

OWE on other OW carriers don't always get full access to things like the best seats and stuff as opposed to their own carrier's elites.

Not defending the QF position on this (and yes, right now I am P1 so I never see a block) but it's not without precedent either in the airline/alliance world.

tbh there are very few ways that having CL/P1 status is significantly "better" than Plat that I kind of get that they want to put these little things in to make some difference to having the higher status. And, aprt from your busy trunk routes at peak times, the chances of a CL/P1 - or more than one or 2 in those rows is probably pretty low.

And T-80 absolutely it's opened up and fair game. I think one of the last flights I was on a UM was placed in 5F ....

Been the case for a while. It was one of the perks I enjoyed as a P1 as I don't like the T-80 lottery. Interestingly, international J seating selection doesn't seem to differ whether WP or P1

It's been like that for at least 5 years - but only on domestic.

International services have no such general restriction.

I never liked the restriction Qantas placed on rows 4-5.

And T-80 hours is a good idea but seats also open up to anyone so as a Platinum the best I can do over Gold is row 6 until T-80 hours. And you have to make sure to get in early. Today it was more like T-79h 30m before the seat map opened up and by that time 4DEF were gone do luckily moved to 4C.

I wouldn't be bothered too much by domestic seat selection. Once upon a time pax in row 4 & 5 were often treated better (plunger coffee in the morning, wine from J in the evening) but those days are long gone. The only difference now between row 4 and emergency exit is an occasional handshake from the CSM and being able to leave the plane 2-3 minutes earlier.

Agree with that. On both VA and QF I'm happy with an aisle seat in the first half of the plane ( if I'm flying domestic whY!). Further forward is better, but not a major thing for me.

Yes and no....

On Qantas, row 4 substantially increases your chances of a cheeky J wine if you have a good CSM. Not to mention additional leg room.

As someone who has basically qualified WP1 on domestic Y in the past year, you do get to know some of the CSMs quite well, especially on "desirable" routes for those CSMs with seniority (e.g. DRW).

As always YMMV.

I've always thought that was a bit of an urban rumour, like how if you say "legroom" three times in front of a mirror Alan Joyce will appear to show you a world of 12 abreast seats.

I've not sat in row 4 on the refurbished 737s (the ones without the curtain between Y and J). However, it looks like legroom is less than the old ones. Is this the case?

Wouldn't have been a UM, it could've been a YNGP (Young Person Travelling Alone), any kid 12 and over where the parents don't want any supervision or anything.. UMNR's on 737's are always row 29 or 30.

Unless it's me and my entire family taking up row 4!!! :D

How tall are you? Legroom feels the same to me.

I too have noticed this recently and was wondering what had happened. I'm sure I was able to select row 4 more than 80hrs before my flight (I'd have quite a lot of success get 4A, the equivalent of 1A for us plebs, and rather enjoyed the extra leg room! )

I'm 5'10.

Was more a visual observation than anything. Exit row aisle on a 737 for me is great. Only downside is how incredibly slow some people can be to disembark.
