Just curious as to what your definition of a Frequent Flyer is?

How frequently does one have to fly to be a "Frequent Flyer"?

I fly fortnightly, so consider myself to be "frequent", but there are those who fly a LOT more than I do.

when i am in australia i fly from brisbane and return once per week as a minimum. sometimes it is more. this is usually to places like Weipa, Cairns, Townsville, Emerald, Newcastle, Rocky, Mackay, Longreach and pretty much anywhere a Dash 8 flies.

when i leave australia, every couple of months, it's either to NZ or to the very far north of Canada - which takes a really long time to get to.

so i consider myself a frequent flyer. when i look at how many points i have earned in a very short period and realise that 98% of them are from my backside being on a QF flight or other OW partner i think of myself as a frequent flyer.

would be interested to hear what others think of makes them a FF.

Cheers

I fly every week, sometimes two or three times. I considered myself a frequent flyer when the FAs started to recognize me.

Agree with you there but depending on the FF program. Definately with the QFF program but others are dodgy.

Take the AAdvantage program. Don't have all the facts but I am sure you will correct me if I am wrong. The two top tiers are AAdvantage Executive Platinum and AAdvantage Platinum. If you can reach AAdvantage Platinum with a return flight SYD-LAX (or similar) once a year then this is not flying frequently.

I don't agree. For some years I maintained SG with just one trip to Europe each year. I might have been a valuable flyer to QF but calling me a frequent flyer would do violence to the english language.

I am happy to revise it to top tier only, but I know lots of second tier people who fly more frequently than me :D .

I'd say 40+ flight segment's per year.

I've maintained SG status for the last 5 years almost exclusively on Discount economy travel.

This year I reached WP by dint of ~60 discount why flights (860SC's) and 6 Business flights as part of a DONE4 (560SC's)

The remaining 14 sectors of that DONE4 should earn me another 1800 SC's; more than enough to retain WP. I would expect my normal business travel in discount economy to easily garner another 300 SC's for partner Gold!

That seems to be a more logical approach - still excludes me (now WP) but I would say I was an infrequent flyer (thank heavens).

You bought a DONE4 and only flew 6 segments?? What a waste!!! haha

His DONE4 is not completed yet but the remaining 14 sectors will be in his new QFF membership year as per quote below.

Tend to agree that flight segments are a better indicator than status or even BIS miles. For example flying twice weekly return ITM-HND (half economy/ half business = 208 segments) would not earn top elite status on JAL or ANA*. And it wouldn't earn/ accrue that many miles either, though I'd consider a person doing such a thing a frequent flyer.

Edited to Add: *On reflection actually they would, when considering the 120 segment top tier qualifying terms.

Flight segments/year certainly meets the criteria for defining frequent flyer - the question is how many segments makes for frequent.

Well it's a subjective question and any quantitative answer will have limitations. Defining either by status, BIS miles or segments flown will all have shortcomings.

How many segments? Just to throw my hat in the ring I'll say 50+/ year, equating to roughly 1 return flight every fortnight minimum  .

How about asking your spouse? Some will say "too frequent" and others will say "not frequent enough" :p .

You know you are a FF when it is 3 hours til your 2 week away flight and you still feel you have half an hour to start packing.

You know you are a FF when your travel agent finds you to be a pratt.

You know you are a FF when the offer of a free flight on Jetstar or Virgin Blue is like someone sticking a knife in your eye

You know you are a FF when you are sitting in a bar in Bombay typing reasons that define a FF.

:D To Add:

You know you are a FF when your kids forget your name.

You know you are a FF when your SO forgets your name.

You know you are a FF when FAs and Lounge Dragons do :p .
