LOL, I have posted this elsewhere but its worth repeating:

Should be hearing from CASA around 2 today:

The six-week grounding of Tiger Airways Australia is expected to be lifted today by the aviation safety authority, a day ahead of tomorrow's scheduled Federal Court hearing.

But realistically it could take the airline time to get back into the air, in order to sell seats and ready pilots, cabin crew, support staff and airliners for duty.

Fairfax Media believes Tiger's first flight could take off as early as Friday from Melbourne on one of its core routes, possibly to Sydney.

Tiger Airways to get all-clear to fly today

From the link in the previous post:

Tiger Airways will be allowed to resume operations from Wednesday after the Civil Aviation Safety Authority lifted its suspension after nearly six weeks.

edit: hope that BNE-MEL is one of the first sectors back in action, looking to book a JQ35 and want the price match :)

I guess if they have zero incidents for August the cap will be removed.

But that's my point entirely, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

"Now look, we don't totally trust you to not plow 180 passengers into the ground, so we'll let you put a few planes up a day, and if you manage to keep everyone alive we'll let you put up a few more each day in September".

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Is that what you call hedging your bets?

Surely they are either safe or they aren't?

I don't know the reason, but there do seem to have been some issues around its record keeping - so perhaps they want to ensure Tiger can keep proper records with a small number of flights, before they let them do more.

I am regularly in meetings with transport safety regulators (rail sector) and they are usually ok with the operator offering to demonstrate they are competent at a task by doing a set number of them and reporting on it.

I would say this is the case with CASA, they want to test the competency of the airline and pilots and the only way to do that is to let them fly somewhere.

If you mean SYD-MEL your in luck:

The airline is resuming services with a simplified flight programme in order to focus on flying popular and profitable routes. Flights will initially resume between Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) and Sydney. The resumption of services on other Tiger Airways routes will be announced shortly. As part of its simplified flying programme, Tiger Airways Australia will reduce its operating fleet from 10 Airbus A320 aircraft to eight Airbus A320 aircraft. Consequently, two Airbus A320 aircraft will be redeployed to other airline businesses in the Tiger Airways Group.

The new flight schedule will initially consolidate the business into a single crew base operating from Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) and as a result the crew base at Adelaide Airport will be closed and the crew base at Avalon (Melbourne) Airport will be temporarily suspended. All Tiger Airways Australia staff currently working at the Adelaide and Avalon crew bases will be offered redeployment to the Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) operation.

Yep they are back selling fares on their website for flights from Friday the 12th. No crazy fares though!

Just received this email:

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]We know that many Australians have been inconvenienced these past few weeks, and for that we apologise. We're sorry.

But we're also listening: listening very hard to what you want from us. Our mission is to be a safe, reliable airline that enables ALL Australians to go the places they want to go at a price they can afford to pay.

Since we haven't been flying, our competitors have raised their fares by more than 30%*; we don't think that’s fair. It's a big country, and we believe that every Australian should be able to travel for a reasonable price.

So while we're always looking for ways to improve, one thing will never change: our absolute commitment to ensuring all Australians can go to the places they want safely, affordably and reliably.

Thanks for your support,

The entire Tiger Airways team

But how do you test the competency of CASA? This whole debacle demonstrates to me that they are:

1. incompetent

2. overstaffed, if they can drop everything else to crucify a foreign-owned business

3. totally not independent (they just do the Govt's dirty business).

I'll be monitoring the performance of CASA rather than Tiger.
