Western Sydney Airport (WSI) Discussion

Hoping JQ has some DPS or NRT routes planned. Bali speaks for itself but Japan has become a very popular place for tourism these days. Maybe SGN as well considering the demographics in that area.

But, I guess they want to see how WSI patronage is before that...

Again, won’t be DPS for Australian carriers as there is no available capacity from the major cities.

Why? Data centres need power, water and fibre connectivity with trunk land points such as broadway in Sydney, they tend not to have a need for much staff or airports. Next DC has 200 staff for its 30 odd centres, Airtrunk 400 odd. Most of those are cable guys who don’t go anywhere.

Sure, the technicians may not travel, but Management travel, customers travel.

Air travel in that industry is very rare, something called zoom does the job, I am a recent participant in that at exec level, thank god for LTG

JQ could move existing capacity potentially?

Why give up proven demand from the major ports (which have feeder routes) for a gamble on WSI?

The capacity is awarded for airline / route combinations, airlines would have to apply to move the capacity.

It's great you have all the numbers in front of you

In my totally un-experted opinion, with no analysis to back it up - I suspect WSI will be a raging success even before they sort out the Transport/Metro and fuel pipeline issues and Airlines will scramble to get flights to/from there.

I’m guessing that’s a dig but they are available here. Load factors in the mid to high 90s to Indonesia for JQ, VA and QF in the most recent report.

Load factors don't mean everything if you have to sell a large number of seats for very little

Yeah, short term I can’t see any DPS flights from WSI

The only reason I can think of is if they thought they could keep the same profitability operating it out of WSI and free up a valuable peak time slot at SYD for a service that would be even more lucrative.

and a 10:20pm arrival into Western Sydney.... might just make it into the city by midnight if you're first off the plane, probably no chance by train though.

Unless the fare is cheap enough to offset the expensive taxi/Uber to get out there, we'll stick to SYD.

Good for people who live out that way though. For many this will be almost as inconvenient as flying into NTL. Or going to AVV instead of MEL.
Also if arriving passengers are choosing to change for the free bus to St Mary's then train/bus to city, I fear they will be stabbed with machete because that is a crime hotspot.

Moreover, SYD Uber is not cheap. For suburbs such as Strathfield or Parramatta, it will cost around the same to catch Uber from both WSI and SYD.

Perhaps Uber and Hire Car will be especially popular in WSI.

The Bali market is not the same as the MEL/SYD/BNE market

I agree - DPS is a leisure market and much more price sensitive than MEL/BNE. That’s why it’s mostly JQ vs QF.

JQ has heaps of slots at SYD which lets them manage them internally - if there is some theoretical route that has huge demand they could add that now and drop down a domestic frequency on an underperforming route. No need to mess with a highly successful route that has capacity restrictions.

Intriguing that so many posters on here assume passengers arriving at WSI will want to travel to the city centre.

With what is it?, 3m plus people, living in western Sydney suburbs and substantial industry and transport hubs out there, surely most who select to travel to this airport would have zero interest in travelling to the city or eastern suburbs.

Just bear in mind there are many Sydney residents for whom "Western Sydney" means Chatswood or Marrickville.

Agreed, and from SIN the new SQ flight only departs an hour later than the current SQ211 so chances are passengers will simply choose the airport most suitable for them to travel from.

There’s also “rapid” buses running to major western and south western transport hubs - at present they’re stated to run till 11pm but I’d expect this to be extended once TfNSW gets a better picture of what’s operating at WSI.
