I don't know what's going on but the last few times I've flown SYD-MEL in the evening recently, they've run out of the vegetarian main really early on. The CSM got me something from the economy menu but it doesn't feel great

The vegetarian meals on VA are not special meals - they're just an option available (with a further option to add cooked meat to it if you wish).

But if you're referring to full meal preorder system, then sure.
