Virgin Australia Business Class - Meals, Menus & Service

The QF ones are soaked in butter (IME). The VA one I had today (while less substantial than QF offering) tasted like it had just been toasted.

Choices: beef pie with mushy peas
Green papaya salad with chicken and glass noodles

Pie was tasty and tender. Glass noodle salad had slithers of green papaya. Lacked flavour for me however.

Quite impressed with virgin domestic J.

Partner and I had identical meals 12.30pm OOL to MEL with sparkling wine as PDB. I liked the salad, light and tangy. Partner said pie needed more sauce, but overall pretty good

Was meant to be 304 but MEL fog cancelled it. Further delayed by ATC and a very low and fast trip when we got going - would have been a lot more fuel burn.

Breakfast (trying hard to remember what it was, but nothing comes to mind):

VA353 Mon 23/4 MEL/BNE

Snack flight as after 8pm, but I had been having working morning tea, lunch and afternoon teas with clients so looking for a light option. I’d already eaten in the Lounge

Salad with tomatoes, olives, goats cheese, capers, red capsicum and basil IIRC was perfect. Nice dressing and just enough. Should have added the rocket salad and shaved parmesam to it - but ate that separately.

Only downside was the Anzac biscuit that was rock hard and try as I might to eat it, couldn't crack it so had to leave it.

Late afternoon BNE - SYD. Option of three dips (beetroot, hummus and sweet potato), with the pea and greens salad and a shortbread cookie.

Beetroot one was my pick.

Other option was lamb meatballs in a tomato sauce with basil and Parmesan.

SYD-BNE and MCY-SYD last week. Sorry no photos, but here are my tasting notes on their wines..their rubbish. In the virgin (SYD) lounge their rubbish, and they serve up exactly the same rubbish in J. A pre-takeoff sparkling was offered ex MCY (nice thought) but was undrinkable. I used to drink better wines from the ubiquitous cardboard box (Uni days).
 
Can you advise how these wines were labelled?
The sparkling (a Rose) was served pre poured, wasn't shown the bottle nor told what, and after sipping it I wasn't interested to know. The red was St Halletts "the duo", apparently bottled specifically for Virgin - I've drunk many St Halletts from their different price levels and although I don't expect their "Old Block", this was the worst St Halletts I've ever had (St Halletts please note, this wine is not doing your marketing any good). There is a red and a white under a generic brand ("bottled for Virgin" or similar), both worst than my memory of cast wine. And a riesling which was ok, and which I googled and is in the $10-$15 price range, but was eminently forgettable (yes I've forgot).
I hadn't flown Virgin for a long time and although I have a high regard for John Borghetti (imagine Qantas now if he got the top job), I wont be flying J with them much except to use up some points.

Still better than the crAAp they serve in domestic F in the states... Try googling the prices of those bottles. I once did and they were all $4-$6 a bottle. And IMHO anything Australian in the lower price range tastes better than the Californian junk.

Great falafel mini patties with bacon and mushrooms. The juices in the bottom really helped the falafel - overall very tasty and an unusual breakfast experience.

Anybody have an idea on the topping for the falafel - goats cheese??

Beat me to it. Labneh/Greek yoghurt. I'm certain if you google some keywords, QF WP, you'll find it detailed on some news article as part of Mangan's new menu.

That said I'd be quite happy with goats cheese instead :). But that seems to be a controversial item for some.
 
One disappointing ride in J and another mediocre one this morning.

First dish was described as "Chicken". I think the quote went something like "we have chicken for you". No choice. No explanation. Upgrade given at t-48 and J was only half full. Was a slop of something doused in oil that really wasn't good in any way. Dessert was worse, melted chocolate coated in coconut - net effect was everything stuck to the spoon and your dessert was spent licking a spoon. Not exactly a classy look... This was BNE - CBR 7:20pm departure.

Second dish is the potato rosti, which was delicious. No qualms about this as a hot breakfast dish. Very nice indeed. SYD - BNE 6am departure. Yes I had a diet coke, I'd been awake since midnight at this point.
