Vinomofo Wine Deals

Spoke to a winemaker today who is of the opinion that company's like Vinomofo (there are others so not picking on the Fo) are killing the wine industry.
And yes, he has been down the Fo road.

The winemaker is entitled to his opinion. I don't agree with his opinion.
Now, best wine for me under $15 was Amelia Park, best over $15 Hewitson Mother Vine.

That was what I was trying to elude to in my post.

I'm disappointed that I missed out on the Amelia Park - hopefully a new vintage will be offered in the future.

I would vote the Glenlofty SV and Maverick Twins as my under $15. For the over $15 I would say the Hewitson Mother Vine and Sandalford Estate Reserve Cab Sauv

Under $15:

- Fox Creek Fox and Hounds Shiraz Cabernet

- Fox Creek Fox and Hounds Shiraz

- Jeanneret Westward we went Cabernet Malbec

Over $15 is a bit tricky - lots of stuff like Giant Squid Ink, V&A Lane, Lindeman Trio could benefit from years of cellaring. Ready to drik now Erin Eyes Pride of Erin Reserve Riesling and Devil's Lair Chardonnay and Willoughby Park Kalgan Ironrock Chardonnay

I would have the same top 3, but I would put the Jeanneret second and the Fox Shiraz third for the under $15 category.

In the over $15, I would say:

1. the Hemera Tier 1 Shiraz 08

1. the Paxton Jones Block Shiraz 12

(joint first - I can't choose!)

3. the Hardy's Thomas Hardy Cab Sauv 12

If there was a middle tier where the majority of my wines are purchased - say $16 to $30, then I would add these amazing 3 to the list:

1. the Innocent Bystander Syrah 14

2. the Wynns V&A Shiraz 12

3. the Amelia Park Reserve Cab Sauv 12

When I look back over the wines I have had through VinoMofo, I have been blessed with so many good wines, it was hard to choose these top 9.

The Aus wine industry is far too big for VinoMofo to kill, or probably even have a sizeable impact. They aren't a bottom feeder, more nibbling at the edges.

Did he have an opinion on how the duopoly of the chains is "killing the wine industry"? They have far more effect (own labels, price pressure etc.) than VinoMofo.

Looking at some of the best buys of 2015 people are posting, it will be very interesting if VM can replicate during 2016 that level of quality wines at the prices offered last year. Recent offerings haven't really had any in that class.

FWIW, some personal ramblings on the topic: 2015 - The Year of VinoMofo

How could I possibly argue with this amazing selection? I surely couldn't as I just about had my hand up first. I just beat you but you had an excuse - I think you had a pen in yours and you were far to busy counting the show of hands from others on this beauty !

Claimed to have some problems getting his money and felt that his wine was devalued. It wasn't only the Fo he was anti, Craka and the ilk too.

Problems getting paid is a fair enough gripe. If you have a contract to supply for a price and you deliver the wine, then you should be entitled to get your money in the timeframe specified. As for wine being devalued - that I don't agree with. I'm sure he'd love to put his price up if he could. That's just supply and demand. I'm pretty sure he doesn't complain about mobile phones, cars, internet etc. getting cheaper or better quality over time... :)

Great article RB.

I really do wish Langtons would do something about their website - it's a PITA to use, given the quantity of items they push through. Though I disagree with the service comment - haven't ever had any bad service from them - just slow deliveries sometimes.

Yep - Amelia Park for me under $15 - standout bargain for a well made wine. Over $15 I found the 2010 Fox Gordon Hannah's Swing too good and drinkable to hang on to and it's been guzzled.

Thanks for a great summary! Are any of these currently on offer from VinoMofo??

Good article RB!
Just want to share some information on your question "Will VinoMofo be able to expand their operation in some overseas markets? Seems they are intending to proceed fairly carefully, I can’t even guess how it will go.":
During my stay overseas earlier this month, I logon to Vinomofo's site and as it recognized it was from an oversea IP, it showed a message that invite me to join a the first group of members oversea, and that they are now recuiting members from the US, China and Singapore (I forgot if Japan is the fourth one), they mentioned they have the resources to go deep in one country, but they preferred to experience by carefully expand in a few countries. And they said they will have a launch ceremony in the near future in Hong Kong or China.

I agree with everything in you have said. Their website is a PITA and their delivery is often slow. I paid for an order to be shipped a week ago and I still don't even have a tracking number. When I ring them they have always been helpful.

Yeah, it depends a bit on how they go about it and whether they have to develop local partnerships.
Some countries have the liquor/wine trade pretty much regulated or controlled by vested interests. I would think USA would be tough to crack.
It will be interesting to see how they go about it and what sort of wines they offer, the logistics are a bit different for an overseas operation.

I might register/login with my VPN set to Hong Kong and see what happens.
