Transiting in HK Airport

Thanks guys! I think I have a plan in place. We will check the bags through, and provided that goes okay, on arrival in HK, I will check the transfer desk, if open, awesome, if not, to the train we go! I think it should be fine. Then we can head right back and they have the day to rest. Phew. Fingers crossed for transfer desk!

Let us know how you get on.

I would hope that CX would be able to check the (hold) luggage all the way through to Australia. Though the onward boarding passes might be less likely, the chances are still pretty good. Note that if the bags are not checked through, Left luggage in HKG is next to the CX arrivals lounge.

Accor has a hotel on Lantau with courtesy bus each direction. They might have day rooms available. This is connected to the outlet mall. Their desk is on the right hand set of courtesy desks as you exit airside.

I'd plan on a leisurely stop at the Arrivals Lounge. If not needing or wanting to go into HK town, get the S1 bus (3.50 HKD each way) to the outlet mall (Tung Chung). The food hall offers quite a variety of food not normally found in Australian mall food halls. And a leisurely lunch and a stroll will "kill" a few hours (cheaply). And if the weather is good the cable car ride is well worth the view of the airport.

Quick note on the S1 bus, I was told you had to have exactly HK$3.50pp fare as they don't give change. Couldn't confirm it as I had my Octopus card with me.

Where do you get the tax refund? I never knew about that. Would the OP just show their CX boarding pass to prove they were actually connecting?

The tax refund booth is nestled among the regular airline check-in desks. You have to present both tickets. Get HKD120 back in cash per set of connecting tickets. The connecting flight must be same day (ie, deaprture must be before 2359, so the 0005 onwards bank of departures to the USA/Europe/Australia don't count!)

As the Octopus Card is good for at least three years, I just keep one. Tough I would suspect that the driver would not turn down HK$4 which would be easier to "find".

Note you do not have to be a HK resident to ask for the Seniors Octopus Card (if you are old enough).

I think it had been six years before I used my Octopus card earlier this year, and it worked just fine. I was surprised.

I am guessing it should be possible to go from airport to Kowloon and back with train in ~2-3 hours? Arrive ~6:40pm and next flight at ~12:50am.

Plan would be to arrive in Kowloon by ~8:00pm, hotel for ~1 hour and then train back to airport by ~10:30pm?

Allow 30 mins to get to train (worst case), 30 minutes for the train, should get you to hotel by 60-90 minutes after landing. And then the same for the reverse. Those times are allowing for a long immigration queue inbound (rare, but can happen) plus wait time for the train.
