To recline or not to recline... that is the question

Full plane, in economy... do you recline your seat fully?

This is one reason I like the bulkhead rows. No clown in front of you to recline into your meal/knees etc.

Much to be said for this. Pity that there are so few bulkhead rows on an aircraft.

Before planning on settling back into a bulkhead seat just make sure that your not going to end up on long overseas flight next to a mother with a baby and bassinet.

Nearly happened to me on an SQ flight some time ago but thankfully at the check-in I was pre-warned about this and offered to be relocated (which I jumped at).

Hmmm, most people complaining about reclining seem to have knee issues.

I never have a problem with knee room on a plane.

could it be that the basis of this thread is actually short people vs tall people?

I think you could be right Dave! I'm 5'11'' (180cm I think) but I have a colleague who is 6'5'' (no idea how many cm!). His take was always to jam his knees into the back of the seat in front so that it wouldn't recline.. Not that he really had to try - his knees were already there to start with..

I'm still with the recliners - but Ito update more previous post , I change according to length - So I recline as follows:
meal times - never
1 hour - 0 - I may occasionally pop back a few cm but not so you could use a laptop
2 hours - 5 cm
3 hours - 10 cm
4 hours - 20 cm
5 hours - 25 cm
or something like that.. you get my drift - the longer the flight the more likely I will use up my designated space.

6 hours + daytime about half way (or is that 25 cm)
6 hours + nightime - as far as I want

If I'm lucky enough to get 3 seats window side or the entire centre in a 747 - never.. just get a good nights sleep across all the seats. :D :D :D I've even managed to have some seats next to me blocked off at times :D :D

I must say, even with a contentious issue as this, this forum and the FT forum are still two of the friendliest around.. ie. very little flaming.

NM - Chrysler Voyager?
That be the b*s, indeed.

A good b*s. We're on our second one of these. :D
Yes, they are nice. And the Stow & Go is great when you need to carry the entire NM clan and their chattles for a vacation. Nothing else like it on the market that comes close to the combined seating and storage capacity.

I think the total recline is only 15 cms (6 inches). Still a lot of space considering the lack of space in cattle class.

Down the back of the bus sir. :p I like Kiwi Flyer's idea, non recliners up the front and those wishing to recline down the back.

Did someone say bus.

Just lay your seat back and go to sleep JohnK :!:

How much do the seats recline on a Chrysler Voyager :?:

Can you get a "Knee Defender" to suit a Chrysler Voyager :?:

Must you ensure the mini NM's have finished their meals before reclining :?:

Can the roof airvents be pointed at the front seat passengers if they recline :?:

Is is necessary to travel to WA mining sites on the B•s before one can contemplate reclining :?:

:D :D The middle seats recline way too far. My kids think they are on some longhaul flight in a skybed! :(

My kids often eat their meals while reclined, despite requests from the cabin supervisors to return their seats to the upright position. And they make a huge mess in the cabin. What's worse is that when the vehicle reaches its destination, no cleaning crew comes on board to clean it up - the cabin crew is expected to do it!

:) so I should review my increments to perhaps 2 cm...

No chance there - my status precludes me from travelling at the back :D .

What about a daytime/sleep time flight switch on each row of seats which limits the recline during daytime but allows maximum on flights you're expected to sleep on?

A bit like the anti reclining lock on the exit row seats on the 737 though operated by the crew from a central control point.

Yes Bill - That's what actually prompted me.. I was in one of those rows once and wondered why my seat wouldn't recline!

As a non recliner on domestic flights, I would find it very amusing to see cabin crew being able to force seats to return to the upright position from a central control point.

That would be great to see.

Even better if I found out where the controls were
