Also ....don't forget that Tiger will make a bit extra from extra baggage and other extras....

But yes they ar still CHEAP!!!!!!!!

This will be my second Tiger flight.

The last one was coughket to Singapore one way for S$1+ taxes each.

For the 5 of us it was from memory only about $120 odd all up :)

Actually, that sound a lot for a free flight

It would be great if we could stop the talk on "free-flight" already. Mabye its worth its own useless thread??

Anyway, how did other members score?

but I thought it was Tiger that started the "free seats" thing. Its not like its something that was subtly implied or hidden in the fine print. Seems to me to be pretty relevant to the discussion in this thread.

Perhaps we should just stick to the facts, one of which would seem to me be that Tiger are advertising FREE* SEATS.

(* conditional apply)

It then seems logical to me that Tiger must be expecting to recover more than just the costs of the additional services (such as $5 credit card booking fee, food, checked baggage, travel insurance, pre-assigned seats etc). However, I acknowledge that this is speculation on my part because I don't know the actual costs inured by TT for such services.

oh yes, another fact - these are cheap tickets.

Re: Tiger Airways launches 'free' seats sale`

You know I think you have a point - all airlines in Australia (domestic) have to advertise all-inclusive prices, so "free" is not only misleading I think it is actually illegal.

I have read up a bit more, and I think the fact the qualification on 'free' is prominent, they may get away with it.

Just checked quite a few options.

There are no "free" seats as far as I am concerned (just a few cheaper ones). I can't handle this TT subterfuge, so I am sticking with QF/DJ in the future.

BTW, TT just emailed me that my 8.30 am CBR-MEL flight in Jan was now a 5 pm flight.

How can they get away with this cough?

So Tigers IT system is up and working.Wasn't at MCY on Sunday.Plenty of annoyed customers.

If you are accurate about having "just" checked..then that is your problem. You are about half a day too late.

I checked about 11am EST and there was excellent availability.
Every date and desitnation I tried had availabilty with several flights each day.

I was looking fora family of 5 too. So was checking for 5 seats.

In the end I decided on the Gold Coast for 2.

But I told my football mates and another 4 booked on the same flights.

The problem is that EXTRENELY cheap deals like this normally sell out quickly.

As an aside, isn't this why phone companies have to advertise free phones as 'zero dollars' rather than using the word 'free', as doing so would imply that there are no further charges (meaning you couldn't legally get billed)?

I doubt Tiger would be in breach of Section 52 of the TPA, seeing as below the banner they advertise that there is a cost for the flight, but wouldn't it have been easier to say '$0 fares' or 'no fare charge' or something?

Perhaps it's not as catchy...

I booked return ticket ( 1 only ) from ool to ADL for the V8's next year, for $50 it might not be free,, but WAY cheaper then the other options,

Death* were over $300 each way,

Never flown Tiger before, see how it goes,, worse comes to worse i have done $50.00
But if they get me from A to B as prommised its a huge bonus, as it makes for a cheap trip !

Had this same issue and made a thread about it. I just ignored the emails and eventually when a new flight was scheduled between the original 1pm departure and the amended 8pm departure I called and Tiger quickly amended my itinerary.

The competition aren't as chop and change as Tiger. Perhaps because they have more planes and therefore more flexibility. The important point is that it does act as a disincentive to book Tiger.

But at these prices...

Before you all get carried away:
TR have 67000 seats
TT have 33000 seats
(no im not telling you my source)

They are low-cost carrier, this is what they do, this is what Ryanair/AirAsia do, plus they only have a "really big" sale like this once a year, so lets just all settle down, things are not as bad in the tiger camp as you all think. Chances are low that they will sell every "free-seat", mainly due to more free seats be put into MEL-ADL, and this isn't a route on that list that is the biggest attraction..

I half hope what you are saying is true because it will give the ACCC enough to hang Tiger (I'd rather they hang themselves by giving away too many seats). Tigger are clearly representing publicly that they are making 100,000 seats in their domestic network free. You won't mind taking a call from the ACCC would you if I refer them to this site and your authoritativeness?

Your "logic" is also very twisted. Pretty sad if Tigger can't even give away all their seats. MEL-ADL is the 5th biggest routes in Australia by pax which makes it pretty damned attractive, and it is also the biggest operated by Tiger, so of course they will put proportionally more seats onto this route.

I thought the ACCC took sdim view of the use of the word 'free' when they are not actually free.

From the ACCC website:
Misleading & deceptive conduct

There is a very broad provision in the Trade Practices Act which prohibits conduct by a corporation that is misleading or deceptive, or would be likely to mislead or deceive you.

It makes no difference whether the business intended to mislead or deceive you—it is how the conduct of the business affected your thoughts and beliefs that matters.

If the overall impression left by an advertisement, promotion, quotation, statement or other representation made by a business creates a misleading impression in your mind—such as to the price, value or the quality of any goods and services—then the conduct is likely to breach the law.

Misleading & deceptive conduct

I think that both "free" and that fact that 2/3 of the seats offered are not in the Tiger domestic network makes it pretty misleading. How funny if this were to be reported to the ACCC - one toothless tiger against another.

Given the "ONLY PAY FOR AIRPORT CHARGES AND TAXES" text is very prominent, I would hazard a gues this wou.ld pass the ACCC test - the other issues may not.

But what about the $5 charge per ticket for using a credit card? That one is not an airport charge or a tax and is pretty hard to avoid. Has anyone actually purchased a ticket and not paid that fee? The only options I can see are to pay with Visa/MC for a $5 fee or to use a voucher.

The $15 assisted booking fee is easily avoided by booking on-line. The others, including checked baggage, seat pre-allocation, travel insurance etc are all optional so no need to pay those ones if you don't want those services.

I did manage to find some "free" seats BLR-SIN-BLR, but with mandatory "taxes and fees" of nearly USD 200, it was no bargain. So no purchase.

From my perspective it's pretty simple. I don't do business with companies that have what I perceive as having questionable business practices. From my understanding and perspective, the 'sale' as advertised, is somewhere between questionable to illegal so therefore I won't partake :!:

Sunstar320,

Do you have any comments about the posts from Crazydave98 (#32 & #33) and others about the potential illegality of the sale :?:

Not really worried about that (who cares!), But in regards to the chopping-and-changing with schedules, you will notice VERY SOON, a few new tiger ports to be announced, to be serviced from both ADL and MEL.....and its going to hit JQ hard.

Sunstar320,
  1. The law makers and CASA. The public are not totally naive either so it does not pay to treat them as such.
  2. Let's see when the schedules come out. I'm sure you'll keep us informed.
