There are people in 1b that should not be given AZ. I spoke to neighbour just yesterday whom I knew had Lupus. He had also had a stroke. When he talked further he apparently also suffers from Thrombocytopenia and after treatment for that, a week later (maybe correlation not causation) he had a stroke.
My FIL has been told by his specialist that he should not have AZ because of pre-existing conditions. But both ACT Health and (Federal) Department of Health and Aged Care have told him he is ineligible for anything but. Both he and my MIL are very distressed about the situation.

And I have a friend who went along for her AZ shot and they wouldn’t give it to her and said she had to have Pfizer as she had had an anaphylactic reaction a few years ago to something. Many different medical reasons.

No doubt, but not related to what I am saying.

I must admit I haven’t been following the technical discussions that closely of late, just focusing on normal things in life. This is big news for me. Apologies if you’ve done it before, but is there some technical information you can post or link to, please? Probably better than the random Google searches I might do.
Study yet to be published but data from Israel showing 94% effectiveness against asymptomatic transmission with Pfizer. Data was leaked and this is the Pfizer comment.

Yesterdays numbers, shame no breakdown of commonwealth administered doses by state as there was yesterday.

Surprising that SA numbers are so much lower than WA, given SA has the much higher population.

Given the messaging in SA, and I've said it here on AFF before, SA is dragging heels miserably. And nothing whatsoever to do with supply. We have plenty. In SA Health fridges

And that is incredibly frustrating. Originally GP said I should only get Pfizer but then did more research and felt AZ would be ok. Just as well because I got the impression I'd have a snowball chance in hell of getting PFizer.

Ehhmm - according to the ABS as of September 2020 W.A had a population of 2.66 Million while South Australia had a population of 1.77 Million. At the end of June 2020 Perth had a population of 2.12 Million while Adelaide's population was 1.37 Million. Perth's population was growing at 1.8% and Adelaide's at 1.2%.

WA has the higher population of the two states.

Ooops your right.

All numbers seem very low to me, still think mass vaccination hubs would be much quicker than GPs.

There is this errant assumption that majority of people have a regular GP, when many younger basically healthy people has no need for regular GP consults so tend to go wherever is convenient on a given day on the rare event they are unwell, and if they work for a corporate are likely to get their flu shots at their workplace not a GP. The need to find a GP and be onboarded much more difficult than just rocking up to a hub with a medicare card.

He may have to wait and hope that Novavax is approved and is considered safe for him or that later in the rollout they are able to be more flexible in situations like this.

Totally off thread, but could someone please tell me how to link to web sites in this format. I know how to do it using the link symbol above, but I find this style is more useful in terms of giving a preview of the information etc. Sorry if there is some explanation elsewhere on the site, but I haven't managed to find it!

yeah I know, old people and technology 🤣

I know some people in their 90s that are still living at home and thus are in 1B.
Yep my mum is 87 and lives at home. She is 1b and got her first shot of AZ at her usual GP about a month ago. I'm glad she did because she is very active and out and about in the community and at seniors gym etc, so if the virus is also out and about, she would be at a high risk because of her age.

Situations like this are heartbreaking - chopping and changing advice, conflicting advice, media reports, confusion etc all just add up to people saying "you know what, I'll just wait a bit" because the messages at the moment really are very confusing and unclear. It is genuinely distressing, especially for older people, or those from CALD backgrounds who are already only getting limited info translated into their languages. The government has a lot of ground to make up on the communication issues alone.

Yep. That's the thinking. But it's a very frustrating situation as he is most definitely high risk precisely BECAUSE of the same pre-existing condition that makes AZ inappropriate for him. The rules in place in the UK or the US would have him getting Pfizer or Moderna immediately, but it's not the way things are being done here in Australia.
