Just been reading the thread about the reason for ashtrays on aircraft. It got me wondering...
1. What is the smoking rate of flight attendants compared to the general population considering they have so many hours on board during each shift and it would be a fair hike to an outdoor smoking area?
2. Are airline staff allowed to smoke in uniform?

i don't know about the smoking rates, but the crew I know wouldn't smoke in uniform in a area visible by passengers. some of them smoke on board during ultra long flights.

Really? Never knew cabin crew smoked on board? Which airlines does this happen on?

thats exactly the point! passengers should never be aware when it happens! :)

That didn't answer my question.. Even is if crew were smoking in crew areas the smell would still get out. I know they don't smoke on the flight deck.

I reckon if crew were caught smoking on a plane they would be subject to a disciplinary process which might include an outcome of dismissal.

I know that many airline employees (cabin crew, ground crew and even pilots) do smoke, but I have never seen them smoke on an aircraft, or even in uniform at the airport.

I have seen some of them smoke in uniform at Southern Cross station in Melbourne, which isn't a good look, but they are quite clearly off-duty... How hard is it to travel with a non-work jacket and wear it over your uniform on the way to/from the airport?

About the only smoking I have seen on an aircraft in th last 25 years are the smokin hosties
Then again, Im just an old perv

To get back on topic....I knew an FA that could smoke up to 5 tabs an hour! I'm sure there will be others that can better that.

Oh please tell me more about crew smoking on-board an aircraft and the smell not being noticed by anyone else

Of course e-cigarettes are totally different :)

some airlines do allow smoking on the flight deck. I have had it explained to me how crew are are able to smoke on board, and for obvious reasons I can't disclose how it's done. (nor, even as a smoker, would I ever attempt to try it!)

with some of the difficulties they have to put up with from pax they might, on the occasional flight, have a cigarette (no one is saying they're chain smoking). if pax are none the wiser, what does it matter?

Sorry but I call bull. I have yet to be on a plane that would allow crew to smoke and not allow passengers. if you cannot explain how its done, its give nothing credible to your claim.

I have seen a member of VA staff in uniform standing outside on the footpath at MEL smoking. Was quite shocked actually, until I remembered that half the staff at my work place do the same thing

ah... ok i see where the confusion is. no one said anything about crew being 'allowed' to smoke. I have friends who are cabin crew who do smoke on board.

given those who work for western airlines are not permitted to smoke, and can't even do so on the flight deck, publishing how they do it would be irresponsible.

I didn't realize this would create such interest... personally I don't see a problem with it given that it doesn't affect passengers.

Actually the only confusion seems to be who's leg is being pulled. perhaps it is yours and they are winding you up? Being that the smell of smoke is incredibly hard to get rid of in a confined i doubt their so called claims especially when you won't even say how they do it.. and why would it be irresponsible?

I have read previously about the flight crew on the deck smoking but I haven't seen anything on it in a while...

The problem is down to the hypocrisy involved...

the rules are set by the government, not by the crew I guess. out of the tens (or hundreds) of thousands of cabin crew it is not impossible to believe that a few of them smoke on board. and like a lot of jobs, there is usually some inside knowledge which enables (as distinct from 'allows') you to do things that the general public can't do.

the issue of smoking came up exactly as it did here... we were having a conversation and I asked how they manage for a long 14 hour flight. a couple admitted they have the occasional one on board... I asked how that was even possible and they explained how they did it. their explanation sounds plausible and I have no reason to doubt them... it was delivered in a matter-of-fact way.
