[Rumor] Qantas exiting oneworld.

There are several rumours floating around that because of the Emirates deal and Qatar joining one world, Qantas might have to exit the one world alliance.

"Most importantly, Qatar’s arrival forces oneworld to confront its key weakness: that it is a disparate collection of airlines that share little strategic overlap. Qantas, an ailing Australian carrier and a oneworld founder, recently announced a codeshare deal with Emirates, which is in turn Qatar’s biggest regional competitor. So Qantas may find itself forced out. Royal Jordanian, which joined oneworld in 2007, operates a Middle East-focused route network that in many cases duplicates Qatar’s, so it may opt to defect to a rival alliance. The promiscuous airberlin, already 30% owned by non-member Etihad, joined oneworld in March but has already concluded a deal with non-member AirFrance-KLM, and may also leave." - Sorry - can't submit link because I don't have enough posts. :-/

What's the opinion on this forum?

Can't have two airlines starting with 'Qa' in the same alliance. I read that somewhere.

No the real problem is that there is QA and then another A, really truly :)

Might want to re-name the thread it's a little misleading ;)

QF were a founding member of Oneworld. I'm sure they'll do all they can to keep them in the fold, but it's very very interesting times. QF and AA have tied up pretty closely with DFW being used for QF7/8, and they have expanded their codeshares significantly. With the USA being critical for QF, I can't see this going away anytime soon. AA also being a founding member of Oneworld may assist in keeping QF around.

If they do leave, it's a no brainer for me. I'll swing 100% of my travel over to VA and *A (not UA though *shudder*).

Being that it is an opinion piece, it's only the authors speculation. also being it isn't an aviation magazine doesn't give it much weight anyway.. and referring to Qantas as an "ailing airline" is a slight inaccuracy!

i imagine the domestic feed traffic QF receives is too valuable for them to consider jumping ship, more importantly where would they go? Scaryteam:?:

I hear Star would like a domestic Australian carrier...

This reads like an airline soap opera more than strategic airline management...

I would also think SQ and LH would block a move to *A, and no self-respecting airline would switch from oneworld to scaryteam.

That'd be interesting, considering Virgin Australia's tie up with Singapore Airlines.

LOL. Would QF joining *A take precedence over Virgin's "deal" with SIA?

Maybe Qantas will start their own Alliance, I'm surprised that Emirates didn't join OW, that would've been massive for every OW Airline, really.

And BTW, INB4TIGERJOINSSTARALLIANCE

lawl

They can't possibly leave the alliance...what happens when Virgin joins one (they will eventually..)...public opinion on QF will be even more down the toilet than it already is...

Would be the biggest business disaster in QF history imo

The rumours would also suggest that Cathay Pacific has been on the cusp of leaving for years......

I don't think that Qantas is in a position to leave oneWorld. Emirates helped it fill gaps in its network, but that is only one part of their overall international strategy. Hopefully, MH will help them fill some Asian gaps.

Can we please change the title of this thread?
I almost got a heart attack when I saw it thinking it was an announcement, then once opened realised it was only an opinion thread. pheww

Is it possible to continue this thread once we have some source to this conjecture.

Because at the moment, that is all I can see is a lot of what if conjecture...

Even just a question mark at the end would do

QF will stay... alliances have coexisted with codeshares with airlines outside alliances for years
eg QF-South African, AA-Etihad, QF-Air France
It is just about every airline optimising their position - some of which will come from within the alliance, some from outside.
Sure there will be clashes
but its not like QF and CX haven't been clashing for years.

IMHO the biggest threat to leaving oneworld (and it has been this way for a while) is CX due to the Air China ownership... but that would put CX and SQ in the same alliance and they are the fiercest of competitors.
So maybe instead Air China leaves star shifts to oneworld, and then one of the skyteam airlines (Eastern or Southern, or the unaligned Hainan) goes back to Star.

-- Also MODS, please put a big Rumour in the title... not the first time this has come up in the other 35pg thread.

There is no way in this world, or the next, that QF will be leaving oneworld.

Membership of the oneworld alliance is one of the two key strategic planks that are the foundation for QF's whole business model. The EK deal adds value to QF; to then leave oneworld would be to lose more than is being gained. The whole point of the QF action is to add the strengths of the EK partnership to the strengths it already has from oneworld.

Every level of QF's leadership, and the oneworld alliance leadership, have made it abundantly clear that QF is remaining in oneworld.

Maybe I'm a cynic, but it seems to me that this rumour is being deliberately and dishonestly peddled by those companies and individuals with a vested interest in destabilising QF.

"Ignorant" and "mischievous" are the words that come to mind ......

And BTW, it seems very likely that AA will soon announce its own alliance with EK - will the mindless pundits then suggest that AA will have to leave oneworld as well?

Sorry - didn't mean to cause heart attacks. :) And yes - it is a rumour - and I should have put that in header - will learn that for next time.

I was interested as I've seen several opinions in other threads that QF was leaving Oneworld - and I have to admit that if that happens, I won't be flying QF either.

And some of the opinions here have turned out to be true.

Interesting times ahead.
