I don't get the whole negativity around SkyTeam?

Even then, what is the point of alliance groups when airlines can tailor alliance partners through codeshares to suit their diverse needs. If anything alliance groups could possibly hinder profitability, decrease value, and provide benefits such as first lounge access that challenge the effectiveness of future offerings. By which I mean, to use an example, if your first champagne is Krug, Tattinger would then appear lesser by comparison. It creates a unhealthily high level of expectation that would be very costly to maintain.
 
Alliances tend to have stronger shared benefits than partnerships. Status credits on alliance partners rather than just partners being one example. Also an alliance "ensures" benefits across all alliance partners but simple partners might not get the same benefits when traveling on multiple partners.
 
the statement from Oneworld on announcing Qatar as member designate seemed directed squarely at scotching such rumours:

""oneworld's flexible approach to bilateral cooperation with carriers outside our alliance means that links already established between our member airlines with other carriers from this region may continue in tandem with Qatar Airways' addition to oneworld, further strengthening the choice and convenience we collectively offer our customers."

KE is one of the airlines on my no-fly list!

I was told by a person who knows much more about airlines than me (...and that doesn't narrow the field down by much!), that KE were once on a "prohibited to fly with" list for US Federal employees.

Well for me it is the AF, DL, KQ combo. I close my eyes when I board the EY flights at LHR and don't open them until we reach the runway. Flying out of the ScaryTeam terminal is the biggest drawback of flying with EY. :p

Garuda isn't in SkyTeam?

Looking at their members list, reminds me of a flight from Rome to Paris on Alitalia. Apparently a tire blew and they had to change it with everyone on board, delayed the flight by 30-45mins.
 
Opinions, thoughts, discussion, speculation, predictions ....... are all part of what makes AFF what it is.

However the thinking that QF would or could leave OW anytime soon based on history and facts is a bit far fetched to be put it mildly. That's not to say its not possible, but the likelihood (IMO) does not correlate to these wild rumours.

Qantas is the only full service airline of Australia and I think the only way of Qantas leaving oneworld is if Qantas chooses to do so. And Qantas would only leave oneworld to join another alliance so no loss of value for QF or QFF. From a totally selfish point of view though I would like to see Qantas joining Star Alliance. With Air Canada and Lufthansa I would get much better access to Europe and Canada.. Don't see it happen though..

And I take it they do live up to your expectation?

I flew with them in 1990 and had no hassles. I know it was a long time ago and things can change in that time.
