... and succeeded in getting to sit in J or a subclass of it, QF AU domestic flights? Not using points I mean, but showing the QP card, and having it ready to be scanned at the QP desk.
I a way, I know the answer, ... but paws crossed... any success?
I am now going to see if there are any J or subclass of it, available this weekend.
Already have a QF one way, VA back.

If you are asking about op-ups for QP members, the computer says no in most cases.

How will you phrase it? "I have an economy ticket, but would like to sit in business class... can I?"

Yap, Lowjhg... thats it.
On the flight I am on, it shows 5 J or subclass of it, as available.
I will ask and see what happens, anyroad.
As a NB, PS, SG and even WP on domestic flights I've never been offered a superior cabin class (and I don't go all about asking for them too). The only op up I got was last week SYD to SIN on QF5 W to J as a WP.

And by 'subclass' you mean CDIU, J as the full fare?

Kath & Kim (I forget the episode)

Kel Knight: "Will there be any chance of an upgrade?"

Qantas Check-in guy: <smirks> "No"

Two possible answers to that question:
1. There are no spare seats left in J.
2. There is an available seat in J, it will cost you xx_ points to upgrade.

Have you as a QP member, asked at the QP desk, and succeeded in getting to sit in business class on that immediate upcoming flight?
You have a much better chance of op-up if you don't ask.

FWIW I was once op-uped both legs of a SYD-BKK return and I was only Qantas Silver. Still don't know how it happened.

...showing the QP card.....

As someone said in another thread, there is more chance of Branson marrying Joyce in outer space.

It is always nice to hope for something, but you will not get it, and will just suffer the embarrasment that some people feel.

Well I got an opup when a QP and only bronze on SYD-ADL.
Only problem for the OP I was also AA EXP and had my AA number in the booking.

I like the reference to a "Sub class" of J. It's almost like being in a Harry potter novel looking for platform 9 3/4 .

I've been a QP for years and a gold FF for a couple of those years and I'd never ask as I don't like being laughed at.

Mr P who has been WP (but sadly this year has lost it) is the same. He has received them but would never ask for them.

I guess C, D, I and U a re such subclasses ...

Anyhoo, back in the two airline days it was quite common to be able to request an upgrade at the QP service desk- and get it. Heck, back then, me and my top level Gold colleagues would be upgraded on check-in about 1 in three domestic flights anyway (B, H, Y fares).

However, toward the late 90's blocks (software) were put in place and such QP requests became much less likely to be granted or, indeed, possible.

These days? ... fuhgeddaboudit...
