QP member, wanting to get to J... has any QP member asked nicely... at QP des...

I'm just wondering why you'd get upset when experienced travellers respond to your question honestly?

I'm in Y for our next 13 hour slog to Dubai. Husband is almost LTG. Our booking was made when he was WP. I know there's no point in us asking for an upgrade. We might get one but it won't be because we asked - just because we were very lucky.

We have enough points to request an upgrade but can't seem to be able to request it as it is on an Emirates plane. Even though it was booked through Qantas.

Aye, Platinum, Gold, Silver, but it also mentions QC members, aka QP members can also ask.

Sorry what is your point about QC members. No one said they can't ask. But you have asked about a free upgrade, at least that is how it appears to be for me. When Platinum, gold and silver (silver also being qantas club members to be in the lounge) do not get free upgrades by asking for them, that gives an indication of the chance of an upgrade for a Qantas club member. So you will find that the mention of status levels was answering your question.

I chickened out.Didn't dare ask.So, that's it then.Back of the "bus".Have fun. I will leave you lot in peace for the next few hours. Rue the day I found this website, eh? Flight coming up, and then some time to spend in MEL, then back later with VA.

Why didn't you ask? You most likely would have been offered an upgrade in exchange for points, which matches the advice in this thread. They wouldn't have been so rude to laugh at you if you insisted of a free upgrade. They give out free upgrades according to Qantas need not the passenger's request. Otherwise, they have a system whereby you can ask for an upgrade if you pay with points.

That annoys the hell out of me. If on a QF codeshare, why isn't there a system to use your points to upgrade? Given the few destinations that QFi actually flies to with its own metal the opportunities to burn points on anything other toasters are getting rarer and rarer!

Yep. I didn't realise it at the time. Not that I had a choice though, being in Adelaide.

In a few months, I will be PS with QF.
Will try again to courageously DO IT.
Have many - about 10 return flights with QF and EK with a QF flight code. To NZ and within Au.
Will try it as an experiment with out using points, see if it works - down the track.
As for burning points, SYD to SIN In F with points plus pay... EK... maybe.
Thanks.
Ok... Lets let this post "move downwards".

A few main key points to make here.

~ EK does not fly SYD-SIN or vv.
~ The only F between SYD and SIN is on BA16.
~ If you are to fly F between SYD and SIN on QF code it will have to be via MEL or via BNE (QF8405/QF8433)
~ Points plus pay is not a viable option to redeem a F ticket as it will cost extremely more than just buying a classic award with your miles.

Concurring from TOF it seems that you have a combination of flights, not just with QFA alone but also with VAH (correct me if I'm wrong). It does seem to me that you are spending too much to chase an emotional value which ultimately results in a gain without intrinsic value.

i.e. depends on your calculations and your timing of dates, you can get QF PS with less than 6 more flights. SYD-AKL-SYD on LAN is a good earner prior to 1st july. earns 80SC per way. Note that it can only be booked ex AKL. Expect NZ$799 per roundtrip

Yap, Lowjhg... thats it.
On the flight I am on, it shows 5 J or subclass of it, as available.
I will ask and see what happens, anyroad.

Back in the dark ages, pre the Enhancement era, it was commonplace to ask at the QP desk "Any chance of an upgrade ?". The success rate was then pretty good. Then fast forward a few years and all of a sudden the same question was met with "Do you want to use points ?". Now, you want an upgrade, you pay for it somehow.

So actually it's from the long list of other mostly more 'official' things that have been taken away from us by QF in recent years. So much so that it's seemingly now become bad etiquette to even bring it up. QF have got us well trained haven't they ?

Recently? No ... More like 15 years ...

Was this in the days when there used to be dom F as well as dom J?

Sure ... "Business First" was the combined class in the later 90's with the "First" being quietly dropped six or so months later.

Here's a blast from the past - a TAA Business Class ad. Back in those days before we had laptops one would furiously punch away at their calculator.

Looks like most people in the J cabin got a shadow back then but I don't get is at least 2 couples are seated in the two centre seats in a row of four. You'd think at least one person would move to the aisle seat.

The fair way is to get an upgrade if you have status, not by asking for it.
Maybe back then there were not so many elite QFFers but these days it's hard to find a flight without any WPs on it.
