When I took my LTG flight which was ADL MEL, I took boxes of chocolates with me (from a WW EDR special :) ) and I gave one of the boxes to the ADL QP staff to celebrate. They then came to see me later in the QP to offer me an upgrade. Trouble was, I was already in 2C ;)

Anyway, my point is, if you are nice to them, you never know what they might be able to do. Just asking however is unlikely to do it IMO, no matter how polite you are.
But you got the J upgrade on your way back sitting next to me.;) Totally agree with being nice though.
 
Is it? I've had at least 3 in the last 4 weeks where I would have been the only platinum.

We must fly different routes/times. I've yet to be on a flight this year without at least one more WP/P1 onboard. I do fly mostly on weekdays and during peak times so that's can be the reason.
Still, many times J wasn't full and I sat in Y. probably should have asked for an upgrade at the lounge ;)
 
Ohh, before I go walkabout... ask about being upgraded, with or without the usage of points.
If you are going to ask for upgrade then ask about upgrade using points and be prepared to use those points and there could well be times where they do not take those points and give you a complimentary upgrade. ;)
 
Happened to get upgraded on QF16 on the way back from LA to brisbane as a lowly silver member! Was bumped to premium economy at the gate as the economy cabin must have been full. I was also travelling with a fellow bronze member who got bumped aswell.....very lucky!!
 
Approx five years ago my wife was about to take her first solo overseas flight. At the QP service desk she mentioned this to the staff and asked if they could at least block the seat next to her. That was agreed to. About 20 minutes later she was advised "upstairs" had approved an upgrade to business and she still had the seat next to her blocked. Very happy with Q.

About 18 months ago my husband and I were waiting in the (fairly short) queue at Sydney to check in for a QF flight to HK (in Y). One of the staff took us out of the queue and directed us to the premium economy queue (as "they aren't doing much"), while there the check out guy from business called us over and my husband said "oh, two upgrades" - meaning that we had started in the economy queue. After a few minutes the guys said "now, two upgrades" - and gave us seats in premium economy. We were gobsmacked but happy.

Back in the "olden days" before the New York disaster my wife and I had been in the check in queue in Brisbane for yonks seemingly behind everyone who hadn't come prepared to fly to New Zealand. Finally when we faced the staff we were informed "no room in the inn" so to speak. We protested saying we were there very early and those who had arrived after us had been able to get a seat. But how many of these upgrades have occurred as a result of an incomprehensible request for a free upgrade?

It's great that nice stuff happens every now and then...
 
Happened to us last night on a 13 hour over nighter to Dubai with Emirates. Booked when partner was WP but down to Gold when travelling. We booked discount economy and were upgraded at checkin. We didn't ask for it. Thought we may have had a chance as it's start of school holidays and economy (and J) were full. A wonderful thing.
