Hi

do qantas keep a database of preferred seating and a certain criteria for good seating. if so how do i place info on this list and do they read the info or are you just another number

comments welcome

thanks

best regards
murray :)

This is done by your registered seating preference in you Qantas FF profile. This is only available to Silver or higher status members or Qantas Club members.

thank nelly but i just tried to update my ff details at the qantas site and they only allow you to pick a position of your seat i.e aisle or window etc

you cannot ad where on the flight you would like to be situated i.e exit row

or am i missing something

best regards
murray
p.s i am a qantas club member

No your not missing anything. On your profile that is all you can select. For international flights you can pick your seat with your booking, for domestic however you can't select your seat. Once you check in you can see if a particular seat is available and request it (seat lotto). For exit rows, they are not pre-allocated that I am aware off, and basically you can't request exit rows before your check in. I have heard some people have put in the notes section on their bookings reasons why they need an exit row, not sure how well that works. Best advice, get there early, be extra nice and you may get that exit row!

"Aisle forward", "window rear", etc are the closest you will get to an individual seat preference.

QF allocated domestic seats the evening before the flight departs, allocating in descending order according to seat preference:

1. Chairman's Lounge
2. QF Platinum
3. OW Emerald
4. QF Gold
5. OW Sapphire
6. QF Silver
7. OW Ruby
8. Qantas Club
9. QF Bronze who were once in the above categories, and still have a seat preference on their file.

You're way down the list, so don't be surprised if your "aisle forward" preference constantly sees you in row 46 on a 767 flight - you're just more forward than the plebs on the flight.

Exit rows for domestic flights (if not pre-allocated by the computer) are allocated at check-in, with the usual caveat that you must be capable of operating the emergency exit. Leave the crutches at home.

On QF Link Crash 8 flights, I almost always wind up with an exit row to myself - works great for me, and probably has a lot to do with my status (QF Plat), and the frequency with which I fly on some QF link routes.

On an international flight, exit rows are available for reservation by QF Plat and Chairman's Lounge members only. If any seats remain on the day of check-in, you might get lucky if you're 8 feet tall and can flop out 11 inches to impress the check-in girls.

.... somehow I don't think that would work with the check-in girls, but may just do the trick with the check-in "girls".

Seat allocation is very weird by Qantas at times.

Take a 738. The first three rows are Business, then the rest are economy.

Row 4. Sometimes are plats. Often though it is full of non status pax.
Row 5. Often will be a plat. Still often non status pax.
Row 6. This is where you start seeing plats and sometimes golds.
Row 7. Golds mainly.

This is what I've noted from various flights.

Seat allocation through QuickCheck is weird too. I've seen no pax in Row 4 quite a bit when I've used QuickCheck, yet my default seat ends up being row 6 or so.

I do like the way that the first 6 or so economy rows tend to be filled last in the middle seats... so if there are 2 single "status" pax then there is very likely to be a spare middle seat to stretch out in.

Because Plat's have been pre-allocated these seats, have shown up early and have gone on earlier flights. The seats have then become available to "nobody's"

I was in 8F tonight on QF 559 BNE-SYD, and I was SEQ NO 1, so the very first to check in. Admittedly, I was flying with someone else, (SEQ NO 7), and the flight was full, but still, 8F on a 734 with a recorded preference for forward aisle is a bit rich.....

thadocta, thanks for that explanation. Only found this site last week and this was going to be the first question I asked, but what do you know, it has been answered.

As QFF Gold, I often wonder why my forward window request sees me sitting in rows 6 to 9 (and sometimes worse!). Surely not everyone infront can be Plat I think to myself, and then I catch a glimse of boarding passes of people who aren't even FF members!

What is the answer? I request a seat further forward everytime (prefering row 4 or sometimes 5 as they have the Bus. class leg room) but still to no avail most of the time, and why should I have to keep requesting when it is supposed to be automatic.

The answer is generally to use QuickCheck and look for a more preferred seat. But you have to time it right. As a Platinum member with an allocation further forward moves to another flight, that vacated seat will be available to all people checking in after that point in time.

Refresh my memory, can you use quick check at BNE with checked baggage? I can picture the quick check near the QP/Bus. check in, but not with a baggage conveyor, or can use the quick check and then take you bag to the oversize conveyor (like with Virgin)?

I disagree partially with the "Plats moved themselves" answer.

Why? Cause even flights at 5am sometimes have free seats in the first two rows even when checking in around 4am. That's some interesting moving of flights/seats done by more than a couple of people somewhere between allocation and 4am... It would contribute to free seats, but I still think the first row is left free in many situations for certain pax. Maybe even a late checking in Chairmans Lounge member or similar!

Brisbane has no luggage quickcheck facilities. Melbourne does (although, I don't see that gate operational often). Not sure about Syd. I know Canberra doesn't. The checkin area you might be thinking of is the Oversize Baggage area I believe.

The Virgin system is really good. Only prob is not being able to select exit rows! Saves a massive amount of time when you see the queues stretching on forever. I also prefer the boarding passes from the self check over the standard agent issued ones...

QuickCheck with baggage is not available at BNE - the QuickCheck kiosks as you correctly described them Sequel; however they are for hand luggage only check-in. QuickChecks are also found inside the Qantas Club in BNE

One technique I have employed is to use Quickcheck to select your seats and get your BP's. Then you queue up at the check in counters as normal with your baggage, show yor BP's and ask to have your bags checked. Never had a problem and you keep your selected seats.

It's a shame they closed the Baggage QuickCheck booths at MEL & SYD.

Hi Dave,

I actually believe that, unless a flights is heavily booked, row4 on 73H's is not allocated for exactly the opposite reason; these are left in case WP's or CL's decide to take the flight at late notice.

On a recent Sunday I was doing some work at BNE airport; mrs serfty had come up with me and was investigating the delights of the Southbank/Eagle St Markets. (At a sunny 25º).

I finished about Noon and made my way to Qantas departures and used quickcheck. This was about 5 hours before our flight back to MEL. We had booked the same flights but were on different PNR's; I had these linked (TCP). I needed two machines to get each booking up and we had been allocated 5D/E on a 73H. Row 4 was completely empty. I was able to grab 4D/E and head back to the city for a pleasant Southbank lunch ^.

(I was glad I jumped out of row 5; it is the narrowest row on a QF 73H, losing about 5cm to the row 4 armrests which store the tray tables.)

That evening, the flight was completely full; some discreet BP peeks showed 4F & 4C each accomodated WP's.

I think it is actually a bit of both. Some reserved for late bookings and some freed up by pre-allocated people changing.

Hmm, I think I would have gone for 4D and 4F, leaving 4E vacant. I am sure of anyone did end up there they would be happy to swap for D or F. Does QuickCheck permit splitting the seats if the bookings are linked?

There's always a bit of the latter, but I think that given that row 4 was completely unallocated and it was 5 hours before the flight this was a case of the former. It was the only "empty" row I could see on the screen down to the exit rows; I didn't look any further. I did use the disclaimer "unless a flights is heavily booked".

Too much of a risk in this case as mrs serfty is a white knuckle flyer and an aisle seat for her is mandatory. Someone in 4E might have happily swapped to 4D, but not 4F.

If more than one person is on the one RECLOC this will show with QuickCheck. As these were different RECLOC's each only showed the one seat. As mentioned I used two machines beside each other and did a merry dance selecting the new seats.

From my observation, I would be inclined to think that it is more about late bookings (or the system has a bad idea about what the first row is). I pretty much always end up in row 5, with row 4 either empty or with no status people in it.

Given that it seems to be always row 4 in that state, it would be hard to imagine that it was always row 4 people that turned up early.

I just wonder why it is a peculiar characteristic of 73H's - doesn;t seem to happen on the others.
