...exactly why mobile phones on planes are a _bad_ idea.

Well it workde - they got your attention ;) But the issue is not the phone - its the need for attention - the phone just gives them an excuse - before phones they would have been carrying round their filofaxes or smoking cigars ;)

Coming to you soon on Qantas flights. :D
Exactly, not a good idea at all! Why is it that the minority get their way all the time?

The Yanks have had them for a while, so presumably Qantas knows how the passengers will react. t's a trade-off between convenience for those wanting to use phones, and inconvenience for those who are trying to rest/read a book/make their own call. Probably the clincher is that it's a money-maker.

On balance, I think I'm in favour of inflight phones. If the plane is delayed or diverted, I want to let whoever is waiting for me know about it as soon as possible.

It always amazes me why people think they have to shout into a mobile phone. It took a bus into Sydney yesterday as I was having a liquid lunch, and a young guy four seats in front was on his mobile phone talking that loud that most people on the bus were aware of his conversation. I don't think that he wanted pax to hear, just that he thought it was necessary to talk loud, and I think that will be my main concern if/when cell phones are allowed to be used on flights.

I enjoy turning my phone off for flights so people can't contact me, but agree with other op's that some people use their phones and talk loud so that they consider themselves important. Two weeks ago when I landed in SFO the FA announced as we were taxiing to the terminal that pax could use their cell phones and I wish I had a camera out. It looked like a team of footballers who had never used/seen a phone before with six or seven pax around me making calls with two of them, as I overheard (by the loud American tone) to their spouse about nothing in particular.

This post is hilarious - some people are really showing their age in here! - asking what is the deal with ripped jeans :p :p :p

I completely agree with whoever posted 'its the behaviour not the clothes' is right on. Whilst I'd probably gross out to a fattie wearing stubbies and a singlet in the club, if they were quiet and unobtrusive I wouldn't really care.

Alot of people are oblivious to the fact that not everyone wears suits or even pants and a shirt - and it certainly doesn't link to status/class (I flew F once and the people in there I swear had dressed themselves completely in Kmart clothes!).

Our dept has a smart casual rule which means anything goes bascially, and my boss who would quite easily earn twice what most people in QF club would is a ripped jeans wearer  and so am I ;) (although my salary doesn't compare hehe I wish)

Age is irrelevant! You are probably taking the piss but I would love for someone to explain the deal with ripped jeans. Fashion! Please!!!!

There is nothing wrong with Kmart! The $70 pair of slacks they sell is much better value for money than the hundreds of dollars morons spend on ripped jeans!

John you are great! :p Ripped jeans are just cool, its not cool to look perfect and the same thats why people wear ripped jeans, vintage t-shirts etc so they feel like they are being individual, look different. Its just a fashion trend, 2 years and it will probably be gone.

I used Kmart as a term generically, how about 'Lowes' how do u feel about that? :D

Probably 2 years too many. It is quite sad actually. As human beings we are all individuals and we naturally look different. Why the need for body piercings, tattoos, ripped jeans etc. Lost? A cry for help?

At Lowes! Love 'em! ;)

Hahaha! I can see the days when NOT carrying a mobile phone will be seen as a status symbol though! "I'm above being messed around by this ringing, noisy device", so to speak.

Ahh, I wish!

I reckon the ripped/dirty jeans fad is pretty funny. Suckers are paying a fortune to be "individual" when all they need to do is buy a cheap pair and use their own artistic flair with dirt from the backyard and a pair of scissors.

I also laugh at the young'uns wearing knitted vests with the coloured diamond pattern on the front. I remember throwing mine out many years ago. :D Keep it long enough and it will come back into fashion.

.

Well you can get ripped and fatigued jeans for 50 bucks at Just Jeans, they aren't all designer (I work in retail mgt  ).

However to the PR, Marketing and socialites of Syd/Mel wearing jeans that cost anything less than $150 bucks would be social suicide - but if any AFF members want some fashion tips..... :D

Another in this thread showing their age? ;)

There are already sites around that email/sms your friends if your flight is late/delayed (decent travel managers will also notify the right people)

The best site I found actually annalyizes how many incoming intl flights there is at the arrival time, and if all the arriving flights are on schedule, it estimates at what time your friend/buddy/whatever will clear immigration and customs for you to meet.

Actually I think that's already the case.. some people are important enough not to be and the office beck and call..

Me I have a mobile but never use it.. maybe only $5 per month of use. I can't stand the things really :p

Back in 1994, the thing to do was ...

Leave that half full glass of red on the table in the QP when your flight boarded (no, don't dring it all up). I used to wince, 'cause the Reds/Whites back then were of quite a high standard ... certainly far better generally than today's offerings.

No what is so funny is that ripped years are soooo 80's!:p
The sad thing is I was happy that "fatigued" clothes were fashionable as it allowed me to fashionably wear most of my wardrobe:oops:
Edit: Oh I too am vegetarian but what has that got to do with this thread? If only QF could get some decent food in the QF that I could eat, well their winter soups have given me a 60% success rate but I am getting a little over the pumpkin soup.

Now things really go in cycles, especially fashion. As you can expect, over the years I have had some strange shopping experiences with various family members, but none stranger than yesterday. 14yo Mini NM decided he needed something new to wear, so we head for the ripped jeans section of the department store. He walked right past all the ripped jeans, past all the "Piping Hot", "Billabong" and "Rip Curl" surf-wear, and straight for the dress trousers where he selected a pair of pin-striped strides.

His comment was something like "these are perfect - they will go with my new hat". Later that day he was leaving the house wearing his new pin-striped trousers, black satin shirt with red neck tie and black bowler hat. All he needed was to be carrying a violin case and he could have had a part in The Sopranos.

So much for surf-wear and ripped jeans. The new look for teenagers is 1930s Gangsters  .

I often have a long day and enter the QC in shirt tie, have a shower and change to much more comfortable clothing and also use the club for holiday travel which I would never dress up for. I have no issue with how people looks but behavior is important you should never make anyone else feel uncomfortable as that is harassment. When we take the kids into the club we are that concerned of their behavior that it is almost stressful.

I have witnessed staff have a heated exchange with a well dressed business man when he continually went to the bar for double scotches. He was getting really wasted so they refused service which he then started to rip into them about. I do think that free alcohol is a problem at this place and somehow needs to be restricted. Maybe they should restrict it to 4 alcoholic drinks per visit or something and the money they save could go on the food as there is certainly not enough to soak up the alcohol.

On another note I tend to travel at peak times and therefore like others have mentioned here find it very difficult to find a seat at peak times and Friday afternoon at Sydney is packed.

Hopefully with competition from Virgin's offering we will see QC improve the food and service side.

I'm personally not concerned by dress standards, after all, when I'm going on holiday, I still want to use the QC lounge, even in casual attire. (Although singlets and thongs sound a bit dumb anyway, given the a/c climate!).

Sounds like the writer was a victim of an unusual (sporty) day in QC.

I do have an issue with children occupying the PCs in the Business Centres, and sometimes rowdy behaviour that is ignored by staff.

However I must add my voice to the limited and boring standard of food refreshments available. For the cost of membership, surely QC can provide more than party finger food and chicken soup. Suggest have a look at what Golden Wing used to offer. A real range of hot/cold food including quiches, fresh salads and pastas, and an Asian dish.

On the plus side, the drinks have really improved, and it's still better inside than out.
