Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

I was expecting a QF source for some reason (“… Qantas just announced their first route for ultra-long-haul 'Project Sunrise' …”). I just checked the QF home page but nothing there about this.
It is expected immanently. But widely expected to be SYD-JFK.

So someone’s jumped the gun on the reporting embargo and won’t be getting an advanced presser again?

Yep these things often get sent to outlets the day before with an embargo until the next morning. Qantas will want it to lead the headlines across all media in the morning, so this would probably be their media strategy to get blanket coverage starting first thing tomorrow morning.

Whispers of it being JFK have been doing the rounds for a few weeks now, so unsurprising.

Also noting that many media are in Toulouse at the moment, touring the Airbus facilities and listening to Airbus/QF, including Vanessa Hudson. So we'll get a confirmation soon.

Will they keep SYD-AKL-JFK or instead shift it to MEL or BNE? (Assuming Mascot know how originate widebodies outside of Sydney…)

I would think they would most likely keep it as is.

Even if they don’t they could still keep the same flight number but downgrade SYD-AKL leg to say a A321XLR but with same flight number and have the 787 go from MEL or BNE with a different flight number for that leg.

Was hoping for this. Well I would’ve much preferred MEL-LHR but it was always going to be Sydney first.
"Executive Traveller understands the planned Melbourne non-stops to London and New York are now being reconsidered."

"Qantas maintains its current stopover routes will remain, giving passengers the choice to break their journey."

Feels like Déjà vu. Overpromise and under deliver. Would be sad if MEL misses out and is treated much worse than SYD yet again.

Can’t even get Premium Economy from MEL-SIN atm to connect with the current QF1 as the A330 doesn’t have it.

I don't think us Melbourne folk will give them the yields and bums on seats they will need. Decades of QF shunning MEL have taught us all to fly with SQ et al. Makes it hard now for QF to turn a profit here

If they don’t do the MEL flights maybe they could upgrade at least one of PER-LHR and AKL-JFK to Sunrise aircraft to take more passengers (assuming they get the full 12 in Sunrise configuration).
