The division between short, medium and long is not strickly mileage based. MEL CNS is more than 1501 miles, but is classified medium, even though MEL BNE is medium and is little more than half the distance. Under the old SC bands, it (MEL CNS) fell in the 1201 to 2400 20/40/80 SC band. Qantas appear to want to extend the domestic medium band to suit themselves. Perhaps it might be pushing it too far to make MEL DRW or MEL PER in the medium band, but you never know. Maybe the new 5 SC for discount economy CNS SYD (or even MEL SYD given a little band milage inflation to 500 miles) could not be too far away.
Checking back, a Discount economy for 337 mile SFO-LAX on AA credited as 169 base with 169 status bonus with 500 point minimum guarantee being applied (2 x 169 = 338).ISTR It being 500 for any eligible AA flight.
That certainly is the case currently ...

Where did you get MEL-CNS = 1501m??, MileageMonkey shows 1438m, GCMAP 1432m
If not mileage based, has QF published a list of what routes in what bands?
