Re: Qantas launches online auction for business class upgrades with 'Bid Now Upgrades

Sorry RAM but I completely disagree - it appears a very reasonable system to sell seats that WERE NOT purchased through the existing options already available. They get processed AFTER usual points-upgrade requests are processed.

OK so I upgraded on my recent flights to PER.being only PS my upgrade confirmations came in the last 24 hours. Will be interesting to see if it really works this way.

Re: Qantas launches online auction for business class upgrades with 'Bid Now Upgr...

Fewer ODUs for Status pax

Simpler and Fairer, Enhancement, call it what you will. This is a cash grab that further dilutes status pax benefits!

There are already 4 ways of getting an upgrade with fixed FF levels on Domestic at the moment, of which ODU at the airport is already currently the last after classic awards,Upgrades at the time of a
booking a published fare if available&upgrade requests on loaded by status .This is a new targeted top up,only available to Freq flyers.Heaven forbit a buisness is allowed to maximise the revenue for the product they sell .If the targeted Upgrade offer price is too high, as many suggest there ,will still be seats avail for ODU in the lounge. ODU's run the risk of "catering not assured"on your boarding pass which can be avioded with a bit of planning. They are also impacted by normal passenger flows on the day .There is another way of sitting in J,actually pay for it.

Bid Now Upgrades has arrived

Dear xx_

From today, we're introducing another way for you to upgrade. It's called Bid Now Upgrades*.

We know you like to use Flight Upgrade Awards^ so, rest assured, Bid Now Upgrades will not affect Flight Upgrade Awards or the number of seats made available for them. While we are changing the name of Flight Upgrade Awards to Classic Upgrade Rewards^, they are still the best value option and will be processed and confirmed before Bid Now Upgrades.

Bid Now Upgrades simply give you another opportunity to choose the way you fly.

How does Bid Now Upgrades work?

Bid Now Upgrades is available by invitation only for selected Qantas flights. If you receive a Bid Now Upgrade invitation, you have the opportunity to make an offer to upgrade to Business using a combination of Qantas Points and money.

Around seven days before departure, you may be emailed an invitation to make an upgrade offer. Upgrade offers will be considered after all requests for Classic Upgrade Rewards have been processed and confirmed.

You'll need a minimum of 3,000 Qantas Points for a domestic upgrade, and 5,000 Qantas Points for an international upgrade. A minimum amount of money will also be required.

You can make, change or cancel your offer up to 24 hours before your scheduled flight departure. Qantas may accept an upgrade offer at any time between 24 and 12 hours prior to your scheduled flight departure time. We will send you an email to let you know whether your offer has been accepted or not~.

Did you notice the [-]spin[/-] marketing from redroo? The bids are for people who don't have enough points to buy a higher class seat either by classic award or classic award upgrade. I'm not familiar with the business award costs on mel-per. But 4000 points and $575 seems expensive when I consider the ADL-SYD route. ADL-SYD is either 24000 points outright for a J classic award, 12000 (IIRC) from economy and 15000 for an upgrade from discount economy. So to bid someone has to have less than 12/15/24000 points. Lets say it is the discount economy upgrade level (not many points, don't fly much, only buy cheapest fare), so less than points 15000. What is the upgrade bid? Say 4000 points as per the example, does that then require biding more than $110? What about if I bid 15000 points, is there a $0 cash amount?

Personally the best approach to this is minimum bid. I'd say ZERO points and minimum cash level. But it looks like the two values are linked.

Edit: just checked my email. minimum of 3000 points. Does that mean a maximum co-pay of $120 on ADL-SYD? I doubt it. But if not that gives qantas an incentive to grant upgrade bids over classic points upgrades.

Re: QF Introduces Upgrade Bidding

Certainly Qantas should attempt to maximise it's revenue but this not going to solve any substantial profitability issues. Largely it's just another way in which the brand is increasingly trashed, underlying passenger confidence in the airline and loyalty scheme is eroded and travel becomes more and more a confused circus.

Re: Qantas launches online auction for business class upgrades with 'Bid Now Upgr...

Just got the email... from Qantas epiQure.... what in god's name has epiQure got to do with flight upgrade bidding???

Re: Qantas launches online auction for business class upgrades with 'Bid Now Upgrades

As you would have noted above that the terminology has changed for our flight redemption products. To clarify, these are name changes only, and will not impact their function or conditions of use. For more information, please see: https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn/flying/using-points-qantas-jetstar

And I see that QF have redefined Any Seat Awards as Points Plus Pay. Something they effectively did 18 months ago but refused to admit to!

Sorry RAM but I completely disagree - it appears a very reasonable system to sell seats that WERE NOT purchased through the existing options already available. They get processed AFTER usual points-upgrade requests are processed.

No, not all usual points upgrade requests. This happens 7 days before departure and is decided 12 to 24 hours before departure - so the playing field for upgrades has been changed.

However:

  • they have no certainty and are likely to totally eliminate "Upgrade at Airport" upgrade request option.
  • offer can be rescinded at any time (by Q)
  • no explanation of how 'successful' bidding will be determined ie: value of points vs cash, will calculation vary depending upon point value achieved by customer on previous point redemptions (discriminate against knowledgeable customers perhaps to 'enhance' Q revenue stream at your expense?)
  • likely to have the same impact as ebay and other online auctions where a reasonable proportion of bidders get caught up in the "I must win this" approach and bid to levels that are uneconomic.
  • also no explanation of how normal Q (and some other airlines) business practice of overselling business class tickets on flights will work with this system

Apart from that not a problem.

Just to clarify. If customer X regularly has achieved a points redemption value of say 6 cents/point vs customer Z of .8 cents/point then will the algorithm treat 1 point at the same value for both or not? Will an offer of 5,000 points + $400 made by said customers be treated equally assuming same FFer status etc? Or will it discriminate to maximise earnings for Q at the expense of the least profitable bid? Normal online auctions are time stamped for priority order and do not accept multiple bids above number of items available.

Detailed T&Cs will be interesting to read.

Or will it be a case where they are not publicly available as with other Q procedures that are supposed to be available on written request? (Still waiting Red Roo...).

Just noticed that as well. Now need to check the implications of that change. Any Seat Awards had particular clauses in the Terms and Conditions. Need to check if they've been updated to points plus pay or not. I'm guessing not, but it would be another T&C change without notice if they have been updated.

Re: Qantas launches online auction for business class upgrades with 'Bid Now Upgr...

For higher status flyers, I see this change as a negative, as it will further limit ODU and the fabled Op Up. Higher status flyers will generally have the points required for the upgrade anyway.

For lower status flyers, it is neutral to positive change, as they get to jump the ODU queue and can now upgrade from a very low points balance.

As QF have been copying VA lately (domestic exit row seat fees as another example), my worry is the points required for a classic upgrade award on Red Edeals will rise to match VA.

Re: Qantas launches online auction for business class upgrades with 'Bid Now Upgrades

The devil will be in the detail..... i am sure AFF's will be on the invitation lists, so lets see what happens

Re: QF Introduces Upgrade Bidding

There has in the past been complaints from AFF that there are empty seats in business, sometimes many. It may be a matter of looking at loads and picking flights where there is generally a light J load and these upgrade bids could fill those seats for decent value.

Re: Qantas launches online auction for business class upgrades with 'Bid Now Upgrades

  • no explanation of how 'successful' bidding will be determined ie: value of points vs cash, will calculation vary depending upon point value achieved by customer on previous point redemptions (discriminate against knowledgeable customers perhaps to 'enhance' Q revenue stream at your expense?)

This is key.

There's nothing to say that they won't accept a lower bid from a high status pax over a NB with a higher bid.

Re: Qantas launches online auction for business class upgrades with 'Bid Now Upgrades

Looking at the rates involved, it feels like another step in the relentless drive by QF 'Loyalty' is to drive the value of any QFF point down to the Points + Pay value of $0.0078.

Anyone depending solely on op-ups to travel in J is crazy imo.

For once this is one change that won't affect me, as I never book Y anyway :)

If light loads in J is the issue then bring back J/FASA at Classic rates but better manage them :)

Re: Qantas launches online auction for business class upgrades with 'Bid Now Upgr...

This is a new targeted top up,only available to Freq flyers..

Nope, it's available to anyone

"Bid Now Upgrades is available by invitation only for selected Qantas flights. If you receive a Bid Now Upgrade invitation, you have the opportunity to make an upgrade offer to a more premium cabin using a combination of Qantas Points and money if you are a Qantas Frequent Flyer, or money only if you are not a Qantas Frequent Flyer."

Will likely not affect me personally but I don't like this new addition to the upgrade pot. As the recipient of a couple of at the gate upgrades on International I think these will go the way of the dodo which is a real shame, not to mention a kick in the teeth to QF's loyal FF's.
What's next I wonder ?
Message from Lesley:
"Thanks to the great popularity of our new system you can do a Bid Now Upgrade to our Award winning First Class in the A380, you can use a combination of points etc. or money only if you are not a frequent flyer blah blah blah"
