Aussies love to travel. If they don’t want to go to/via Asia they may want to go to/via the US.

I just booked SYD-LHR via Rio outbound and HNL inbound. Motivated by price (7K all in business) and DSC, but also relieved to know I don’t have to worry about SIN or Asia in case the situation continues to get worse.

Doesn't always necessarily mean a full plane on a widebody will guarantee profit either.
If specific routes are mostly of the low yielding/VFR traffic, it's basically a recipe for QF to throw money down the toilet.

None of the QF routes to the US fit that description, especially now with the AA JV being approved. BNE-LAX is probably the most likely candidate for a 4 weekly A380 service IMO.

Don‘t forget most of the US 787 routes used to be operated by 747 which is halfway between 787 and A380.

Quite simply, "Wow!!" I never expected that even you had such radical views on a complete transformation of aussie society!! :)

Not so radical....gov spends more on Super tax breaks than it "saves" by not paying aged pension to some, most of those tax breaks go to highest earners who would be saving for retirement anyway, and the Australian superannuation industry is one of the highest cost in the world compared to other developed markets.

The sooner the gravy train that is the Australian super industry ends the better. Wont happen of course.

Just reviewing my seats for QF35 on 12 May 2020 and noticed my seats had changed.
Initially thought it was a change from non-refurbed A380 to refurb, but it appears the flight will be operated by a B787-9 (noting neither A380 has row 41 economy).

Checked on LH website (as onward flight is LH, and it confirmed operating aircraft was 787

Has MEL-SIN route with 787-9 been announced??

Thanks Peter

This was announced the other day as part of the seat reduction.
Looks like family and I are on the last A380 SIN-MEL on the 29th March.

Ok thanks, I missed that announcement

At least QF staff are looking after us and moved us to reasonable seats.

Whta chance do those better informed than me about COVID-19 give of these flight cancellations/reductions in frequencies being either further extended?

The sharemarket on Monday 24 February substantially dived. It isn't perfect but it's the sum of all investors' knowledge so maybe they're on to something (unfortunately negative.)

I have a QF flight to Shanghai on May 1st. It has now been changed to China Eastern. My orignal plan was for 2 days in Shanghai and then SQ down to Singapore for a day and then QF to SFO via BNE on May 4th.

Now that Mainland China is a no go zone for US and Australian authorities, do you think QF would reroute me to Singapore instead of putting me on a China Eastern flight to Shanghai? or do I just do a date change for much much later for the Shanghai flight and make my own way to Singapore?

Any experiences here yet on route changes within the QF Asia network?

I can't call QF till Thursday as I am currently in remote Sudan. (another story)

They will let you change with no change fee, but if there is a fare difference, they will charge that.

I'm not an epidemiologist, but have been following what some are saying. I think there is a high chance of further schedule cancellations and reduction in service until late this year.

Heard a rumour from corporate travel that Japan is now looking soft.... QF have a lot of presence in that market, could be next for a right size.

Not a surprise. There's a bunch of factors hitting at the same time.

Japan is having its worst ski season for 50 years. The ski market alone represents a huge amount of AU-JP traffic in Jan-Mar.

The Yen v AUD rate is appalling at the moment

Coronavirus concerns are likely harming both leisure and business market. Some large AU employers have suspended business travel to Japan, and also require any staff returning from there on leisure travel to work from home for 14 days or other similar arrangements. Some schools are doing this also.

Given all that, I wouldn't be surprised if the bookings have fallen in half.

I hope not. I'm considering a trip to Japan in either early May or early July.

I intend to cancel a rewrad booking as QF changed the timings. Do I need to call or can it be done by the chat line?

Japan went into lockdown today, after yesterdays public holiday. Our Tokyo office is now closed for 2 weeks with all staff working from home. They are saying this is a government suggestion. Our Korean office is doing the same too.

With Japan an increasingly important market for QF (and soon VA), and JL having increased flights, sounds like an even further 'hit' to international airlines' revenue.

I think you could do it via the chat, but in my experience the chat staff are the least experienced/empowered/knowledgeable. If you want a better chance of the refund being processed properly and quickly I would suggest calling in unfortunately..
