Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Monday 8 April sees QF162, the early morning 0545 hours WLG across to SYD not taking off until 0705 hours. Arrival for B738 VH-XZK is a suggested 0825, 55 late.

B738 VH-VXU on QF404, the 0630 hours MEL - SYD had not become airborne by 0740 hours so will be at least 55 minutes late arriving at gate at the mainland harbour capital...

UPDATE: QF404 was airborne at 0747 so expected arrival has become 0905, 70 minutes tardy.

VH-VXU was then on QF510, the 0830 hours SYD up to BNE that was in the sky at 1000 on the dot. Arrival was at 1106, 66 minutes late.

VH-XZK returned to WLG on QF161, the scheduled 0845 hours ex SYD that was up up and away at 1031. WLG arrival should be 87 late at 1522 this afternoon NZ time.

While not a given, both of these aircraft have lost time since their initial tardy flights this morning. The loss in time was on the ground.

On Sunday 7 April 2019, QF1 managed to depart SIN 13 minutes early at 2342 but did not take off until 0039 hours so arrival on Monday 8 has become an estimated 0705 hours, 40 late. It has flown via Mumbai, India and then briefly through western Pakistan.

Is Pakistani airspace again completely open?

A388 VH-OQL, the last of the 12 QF A388s, is on Monday 8 April's QF35, the 1155 hours MEL up to SIN that pushed back 74 late at 1309. Arrival in the Lion City should be at around 1905 hours, 70 minutes tardy. 'The 36' has been - to use AFFer Strategic Aviaition's term - 'retimed' from its mandated 2015 hours to a 2055 hours departure, so estimated MEL arrival on Tuesday 9 becomes 0610 hours, 35 minutes behind the schedule.

There was no obvious delay reason as the plane arrived at its MEL gate this morning on QF94 at 0740 hours, only 10 minutes late.

QF81 from SYD to SIN, presently the 1010 hours, is usually a good performer timewise but on Tuesday 9 April it departed at 1201 hours, 111 late. Arrival is estimated as 1807, 77 late.

On Monday 8, QF1 departed SIN at 0019 hours, 24 late but LHR arrival is predicted for 0720, 55 late.

Also on Monday 8, QF64 from JNB to SYD pushed back 45 late at 1955 hours, arriving SYD on Tuesday 9 April at 1540 hours, the same amount late.

Tuesday 9 also sees QF1, the flagship SYD - SIN - LHR departing at 1634 from SYD and becoming airborne at 1657. SIN arrival for A388 VH-OQI should be at 2246, 31 late so the timetabled 2355 hours dfeparture for London will be slightly delayed.

B738 VH-XZG on QF164, the mid afternoon 1455 hours WLG across to SYD was in the sky at 1617, so arrival looks to be 1733, 53 late. Aircraft ex NZ are holding above the Tasman Sea for a few minutes which isn't helping timekeeping.

A333 VH-QPI on the transcontinental QF476 from PER to MEL, the 1245 hours in the sky at 1326 is arriving at 1851, 36 late.

The WLG - MEL QF172 (VH-VZQ) is also delayed with a 68 minute late, 1908 hours arrival the suggestion.

If this 'IT glitch' at DPS is affecting arriving passengers, it'd be logical that it would also be adversely affecting those departing:

https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/wo...ml?ref=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_source=rss_feed

So QF and VA may be complacent. If passengers can't make it to planes on time, either they have to be left behind (and luggage unloaded) or the flight must wait.

UPDATE: QF44 to SYD and QF46 to MEL departed one and four minutes late respectively on Tuesday 9, so the problem must have been sorted out.

Tuesday 9 April's QF19 (a333 VH-QPD) operated uneventfully from SYD to MNL, departing 32 late at 1242 and arriving 12 minutes behind schedule at 1842. However the returning QF20, the 2000 hours, did not push back until 0015 on Wednesday 10 so SYD arrival is an estimated 1004 hours, 234 minutes tardy. This aircraft appears to be forming the 1210 SYD - MNL QF19 again, so in theory it should have sufficient time to 'reverse' in Sydney for a punctual departure.

Although QF36 departed HKG four minutes early at 2011 on Tuesdya night - creditable - Wednesday morning arrival was 0627 hours, 47 late.

QF2 (A388 VH-OQK) on Tuesday night departed SIN on time at 1930, and took off at 2002, but on Wednesday morning following a fairly lengthy hold west of Newcastle NSW, arrived at its SYD gate at 0613, 63 late. More wasted fuel as former aviator and AFFer jb747 reminds us.

Another A388, QF12 (VH-OQH), departed LAX on Monday night 8 April at 2248, just eight late, but did not take off until 2328 so this morning's arrival is delayed until 0812, 42 late.

QF16 from LAX to BNE (the Monday 8 Departure) was cancelled. B789 VH-ZNC had operated QF12 from JFK across the USA to LAX on Monday evening, arriving at 2105, only 10 late. As far as I can see it remains in LAX. Meanwhile, QF56 from LAX to BNE has seen VH-ZNA arrive 31 late at 0531 on Wednesday 10.

As a result of BNE being a B789 short, QF55, the 2035 hours Wednesday 10 April BNE to LAX has been cancelled. It may also be that QF56 on Wednesday ex LAX, the 2320 hours second flight gets the boot as well but so far it's displaying as operating.

QF162 on Wednesday 10, the 0545 hours WLG - SYD is again late, having become airborne at 0655. B738 VH-XZG should arrive at 0820, 50 late.

family member transiting LAX from JFK this evening (9 Apr local).
QF12 JFK-LAX was pretty much right on time.

QF94 was showing on time up to notional boarding time 2155 when a 30 minute delay in boarding was announced - fueling was mentioned.
Lost contact after that, but observed push back at 12.50 am (130 after scheduled 10.40pm) and takeoff at 1.03am.
Looks like around 2 hrs delay arriving Melb, will see in the morning.

She observed QF12 boarding from just before 10pm local, but it didn't takeoff until 11.30.

Sometimes the pilots have to adjust the fuel uplift to account for last minute loadings.

Other reasons for additional fuel might be weather at destination may require additional fuel - such as Fog, or predicted winds enroute.

High humidity tomorrow am, light winds and low temps predicted at Melbourne - this combination sometimes result in Fog but clear skies often required as well.

Arriving later in the morning allows any Fog to “burn off” ( but earlier delays which then back up takes some time to clear). The aircraft can auto land in Severe Fog so that’s not the issue but the additional time required for each aircraft to arrive, land and taxi when Fog conditions exist

QF2286, the 1700 hours LST - MEL took of at 1816 (about 60 - 65 late) on Wednesday 10 April with arrival for Q400 VH-QOX likely at 1926, 71 late.

ayebee, many thanks. On Thursday 11, QF94 should arrive in MEL at 0905 hours, 95 minutes tardy. 'The 12' looks to be arriving in SYD at 0708, 38 late. QF16 from LAX to BNE, the B789, is similar with arrival tomorrow morning at an estimated 0648, 43 late.

Earlier on 10 April, QF27, the 1235 hours lunchtime SYD- SCL long flight with an ageing B744 departed 35 late with arrival suggested (same day) at 1135, half an hour behind.

Sometimes FR24 can get things wrong. According to QF, its QF34 from KIX to SYD has a timetabled arrival of 0800 this morning (Thursday 11 April) and is abput eight minutes late, landing as I write. However FR24 maintains that its landing time was a scheduled 0710 hours.

It's not clear how FR24 can make this sort of timetable mistake given that it must obtain such data from the airlines. FR24 also tends to overestimate many international flight delays, but that's a different matter unrelated to the published timetable.

On Wednesday 10 April, QF20 departed MNL 37 late at 2037 hours, arriving SYD on Thursday 11 at 0706, 56 minutes behind schedule.

I suspect FR24 was having problems overnight, and crashed this morning... I was getting "server error" messages... and still receiving.
My interest was in QF94 LAX-MEL where FR24 continued this morning to show a 9.25am arrival when other sources showed an updated arrival time just before 9am.
FR24 was eerily almost correct as they had to wait nearly half an hour for a gate to be available.

Later on Thursday 11 April 2019, QF172 (the 2600 hours mid afternoon from windy WLG to MEL) has B738 VH-XZJ and is displaying as an estimated arrival at 1913 hours, 73 late.

QF476, the 1245 hours lunchtime PER across to MEL (A332 VH-EBL) had to hold above Rokewood (Vic) but is arriving at around 1855 hours, 40 late.

QF2037, Friday 12 April's scheduled 0630 hours from DBO to SYD (Q300 VH-SCE) was airborne at 0730 after departing at 0725 so arrival is expected at 0837 hours, 52 late. FR24 incorrectly shows this as an '0720 hours' departure. Sometimes when flights are delayed (or in AFFer's Strategic Aviation's amusing rewriting, "re-timed", FR24 has the annoying (and incorrect) habit of displaying the timetabled departure as the changed time.

FR24 was offline to Australian users for at least 15 hours yesterday so while this and similar sites do a great job - marvellous technology - they aren't free of mishaps.

In more on 12 April 2019, QF838 (B738 VH-XZA), the 0815 hours morning MEL - DRW pushed back at 0900 but had yet to take off as at 0909 so arrival will be at 1255, 40 late.

Also on Friday 12 April 2019, QF61 (0935 hours BNE up to NRT) is badly delayed, with expected departure at 1245 meaning estimated arrival at 2105 rather than 1755 hours, so 190 minutes late.

Is NRT not subject to the same limitations that HND is re delayed aircraft landing or taking off? AFF member Himeno has constantly informed us that at HND, if say QF25 ex SYD is delayed overnight, it must be rescheduled to arrive after 2200 late at night.

There are many evenings at NRT when QF61 forms the NRT - MEL redeye QF80 rather than the BNE-bound QF62. Neither are publicly displaying as delayed.

QF19, the 1210 hours SYD up to MNL has been altered to depart at 125 with arrival suggested as 140 minutes late at 2050 hours. This in turn means that QF20, the redeye will be tardy with pushback likely at 2205 for a Saturday 13 SYD arrival at gate of 0820 hours, 130 late.

UPDATE: QF61 departed BNE at 1250 hours so anticipated NRT arrival has become 2057, 182 late.

QF51 (1200 'high noon' BNE - SIN) pushed back at 1248 so arrival is predicted as 1850, 35 late. A333 VH-QPD is the aircraft.

A333 VH-QPA transferred as an empty ('ferry') flight QF6005 from BNE to SYD, arriving at 1409 hours. (Maybe this is to operate the delayed QF19?)

QF19 has changed again with further delay meaning it is expected to push back at 1445, 155 late.

Continuing with Friday 12 April, QF19 (A333 VH-QPH) pushed back in SYD at 1502 hours, 172 minutes tardy and then took off at 1518. MNL arrival should be 2047, 137 late. QF20 has become a 2205 hours estimated departure (125 late) for Saturday 13 SYD arrival at 0820, 130 late. After arriving on QF42 in SYD at 0607, two minutes late this morning (ex CGK), this plane made a switch trip to Melbourne and back on QF417/QF426, the latter being scheduled to arrive back in SYD (QFd) at 1225 hours. It did so at 1240, so forming a 1210 QFi departure was impossible to do punctually.

The SYD - CGK QF41 was as recently as 1200 'high noon' today displaying as punctual but its 1345 hours timetabled departure became 1527. Arrival is estimated as 80 late at 2000 hours tonight, delaying QF42, the redeye back down to SYD. A333 VH-QPA is the aircraft, which earlier arrived in BNE at 0706, six late on QF98 ex HKG, and then as noted above transferred down to SYD as QF6005. An expensive way to run a passenger flight: it may be that another aircraft had become unavailable.

Friday 11 April's QF1549 from BNE to CBR (B717 VH-YQU) departed 121 late at 1631, arriving at 1819, 119 late. The plane had been late on QF1749 from CNS down to BNE, arriving at 1543, 53 late, and then looks to have substituted for another aircraft on the 1549.

The 1645 hours afternoon SYD across to PER (QF569 - B738 VH-XZF) did not become airborne until 1810 hours. Expected arrival is 2050, an hour late.

CBR - SYD QF1520 (B717 VH-YQY) is the 1715 that was up up and away at 1820. Arrival should be 1903, 53 late.'

QF2192 (1715 hours SYD - thirsty MRZ) was in the sky at 1819 with Q200 VH-TQS. Arrival looks to be 1938 hours, 48 late.
