First post so please be gentle!

I have recently taken a new position that entails frequent WA/Qld travel and for which my employer generously sends me business class.

I have also availed of the company's corporate QC membership which is a joining fee of $187 plus 1 year at $220. When reviewing the info that came with the membership card I noticed that if/when I reach gold on the FF scheme I can get into the QC lounge without a QC membership.

If I let my QC membership lapse and use Gold FF rights for entry would I need to pay a joining fee should my status slip down to Silver or Bronze?

As a "new" business traveller love the info and knowledge on the site.

When (let's be optimistic and not say "if") you reach Gold, your Qantas Club membership is suspended until you fall below Gold. In other words if you pay for a one year membership in May and obtain Gold status in November, then if you ever drop back to Silver status you will still have 6 months access to the Qantas Clubs before having to pay another membership fee.

(I have taken note of your request to "be gentle", so have avoided using the following local jargon:
QP - Qantas Pub, our name for the Qantas Club
SG - Scum Gold, Qantas Frequent Flyer Gold Status
PS - Plebian Silver, Qantas Frequent Flyer Silver Status
:D )

What I want to know is, as a Life QP member, if I obtain SG for a year and then lose it, do I still have access to the QP for a year after I die?

Matt, if you are to travel every two months you would be a goldie. By my calculations J class return will earn 120 SCs every time you travel. Travel once a month and you will be a plat.

Thanks for the info.

Do you have to have special skills to pick the difference between a paid QP member and a SG?

SG members have their gold card on hand luggage. QPs don't bother.

Baggage tags

I really have to laugh at the people I see who put their Gold or Platinum baggage tags on their laptop bags. All I can think is that they are proudly trying to advertise their status.

Every time I see that a word comes to mind that starts with w....

Now if only I could somehow get into the Chairmans Lounge..... oops starting to sound like one too!

Your lucky to be flying business class.
To make Gold flying Sydney to Melbourne in economy is at least 18 round trips (even more if you fly on deep discount tickets... up to 35 trips)

Yep, I know the feeling. In my post talking about the long road to gold I indicated that it took me 33 OW flights to reach aurum. Not a J to be found. My problem now is that my year finishes at the end of July but I need to do more travel until then but not nearly enough back of the bus stuff to get me to the hallowed plat. As the travel may drop off after this date I then have to requalify with 600 SCs. With the newfound generosity of the FF program a broken journey on full economy after 25 May will earn me 280SCs for a round trip.

How else do you think Platinums got their name over on Flyertalk????

I know one guy who goes by that ultimate title... QF WP

WP?

Try sitting upfront in a scarebus or 767, with a QF-issue laptop bag - you need your name on it to make it stand out.

For true wank-factor, you can't beat the Amex Platinum or Centurion tags.

Plenty of people must assume that I'm a right cough before even sighting my baggage tags - the "Civil Disobedience: Is still disobedience" T-shirt, complete with image of a cop clubbing a protestor, does the trick...

Yeah, I'm on my 6th return in a row already and I need to fly return Mel-Syd each week until the beginning of August to get gold. I think I'll only do enough flights to get silver and some change.

Scarebus?

Don't know about scarebus, the A330s are quite comfortable.

The 767s on the other hand land like a truck being dropped on the tarmac from a height of 20 metres.

I agree. The A330s are good - more space and quieter too.

All of the Qantas' 767-300s that I've flown on between SYD-MEL are all looking quite shabby lately.

BTW, thanks guys - I put my QF tag on my laptop bag last year when I made it to Gold for the first time. Now I gotta go take it off! :(

So what kind of tag can I use and not look like a wanker? :?

I still use my old blue QP tags. :)

Also, I like the A330's and the Airbus Industries ones are not bad as well. Feels more like an international flight when you walk in and see seats: 2, 4, 2 in a row instead of the usual 2, 3, 2 and the monitors are not those shaky CRT ones that look like TV sets shoved into a beige iMac case.

Daniel

I like to sport my nifty Golden Wing tags on my hand luggage. A reminder of the bygone days of good service.

Back before the Ansett demise, the sign of a true W*nk*r was the briefcase with both Golden Wing AND QP tags (not so many laptop bags in those days).

I also have the burgundy coloured QP tags from when I joined last year (before I went to Gold) but I feel like they are even more of a wank - "look at me, I paid good money for access to crackers, corn chips and beer".

First Class Lounges

Well I paid for QC membership but made it to Platinum so then got it for free. Flew Melb to Auckland return this week and got to enter the hallowed grounds of the international first class lounge at each end.

The food was much better than normal QC fare and didn't seem to have time limits (which was nice) but the atmosphere of both places was fairly sombre. Maybe thats intentional (or inevitable). 95% of all occupants were male middle aged business men. :?
