Qantas Business Class meals & menus

That’s a waste of food :( Not many would be willing to advocate throwing out good food simply so someone could get their first choice of meal.

The entire concept of premium travel is a total waste (inefficient use) of resources. That bit of food waste is the least of the issues when it comes to flying J then. What about having more than one type of wine and the bottles that get thrown away with one glass poured? Even with the cheap wine served in J, I'd argue that's a bigger cost than a single hot domestic J meal. By your argument there should just be one type of wine too then?

As you can tell here, nobody cares. They just want their meal. So kill someone, dammit - just get everyone the meal they want.

As it stands, someone upthread that most should get their choice, and it would seem that most people, most of the time get a choice they are content with. Perfection is obviously possible, though to claim the system is abjectly a failure, let alone below a passing grade, is a long bow.

Food waste wouldn't be such a big issue if strict food safety and liability concerns were not a thing (between friends is fine, between corporations and public beware). The other main issue is one of space in the galley and, I guess , weight and fuel burn.
 
Staff can have it or maybe as a treat offer it to the elites sitting at the back of the bus
Great, I'll book Y and EconomyPlus from here on in. The meal comes with (because they'll surely overcater); I think that's the complete J experience without the cost (sans status credits and points uplift).

And I thought most people worry about the seat in J. (When it works)....I can see all those old.comments regarding food....reminding us all that we are not having a fine dining experience in an expensive restaurant...mno true...but we have an expensive ticket serving up cheaper food when available...that many fast food outlets! 🫣☺️

I guess it’s slightly different.

There are around 60 flights today between Sydney and Melbourne on Qantas, or 21900 a year. Double cater each of those and it’s ~263000 meals a year that would be discarded (12 x 21900). Multiply that for all the other routes each day.

No one wants waste on that scale when you have people struggling to make ends meet.

I thought wine bottles were reused in business class during the day? There’s more than likely wastage there, but not to the same importance as food.

Your ignoring the repurposing of meals to staff that are leftover, which coincidentally accounts for the 12 spare meals when cabin crew/technical crew and jumpseaters/dead headers are taken into account, so wastage is nowhere near your figures. It is still a significant amount that often can not be avoided, some 35 tonne a year, of which a lot goes to ozharvest, the majority by far from the Y cabin.

Are staff working MEL-SYD back to back going to eat a full meal on every sector? And do staff get ‘whatever’s left’, or do they have a separate allocation? (I think it’s the latter?) In any event, two flight crew and five cabin staff is only 7 meals. Even discarding 5 per flight would give over 100,000 meals thrown out on just MEL-SYD and vv.

Throwing out that amount of food just so a passenger can be guaranteed a choice wouldn't pass any test.

I’m not sure how hot meals which have cooled down and are not sealed can be given to ozharvest?

It would be interesting to hear from one of our crew how crew meals are sourced, and whether they have a separate allocation.
