Problem at SYD? [UA flight blows two tyres on takeoff]

Two tyres blown out so effectively landing on metal - hence all the trucks around it. And it probably blew more tyres on landing too - a mess alround.
There is no particular reason that you'd blow more on landing.....

3 Tonne of Debris from two tyres rather reinforces the size of these things.

I am thinking it is possible that one tyre went "out in sympathy" with the other due to "FOD" (forcefully expressed upon the initial failure of the first).

FWIW it was Tons, not Tonnes, there is a 10% odd difference. And the debris probably included a considerable amount of pavement material!

I feel fortunate after reading some of the stories here. My flight in from ADL ended up only being 30 minutes or so late and then my flight to BKK left an hour late. Slightly annoying delays but not bad under the circumstances.

Thanks to all for the amazing pics.

I'm amazed at the grooves in the ground left by those rims at low speed let alone what must have happened on the runway at high-speed!

A very good reason that the fire crews follow the aircraft all the way to its final resting place.

Because they were not sure of what else was an issue until they land, the tower reports 3 ton of debris were left on the runway, continuing on could have seen other debris that may have impacted the fuselage become a problem with help not so close. But if a no brainer really, despite landing at max weight.
Thanks, markis! I was wondering the same thing.

Thinking of the Concorde incident, you wouldn't want to continue with unknown wing or fuselage damage - something that might only become apparent at altitude when the pressure differential increases.

A pain in the bum for all concerned, but rather that than dead or injured.

Oh there is unusual sight ( Not) , another UA a/c parked overnight in SYD tonight . What happened this time ?

Looking at flightradar24 is quite interesting at the moment. Lots of planes going around making squiggles and circles, and a fair few look to be headed to Canberra.

QF454 (ex MEL) appears to be just about to land now, with about an extra hour in the air after having left around about on time. Surprised that QF would carry so much extra fuel.

I was on that QF454 (737-800) - another case of wrong time, wrong place

Here's a brief TR! hahaha

QF 454 (In Y - Using Fly Free Voucher care of QF Fleet Grounding in Oct 2011) 17:30-18:55 flight ended up being 17:49-19:52.

1. On time boarding
2. delayed pushback - strong winds reduced MEL to 1 runway
3. much more turbulence than usual during take off.
4. anticipated 55min flight time to SYD to make up for delayed departure
5. midflight update - 30min holding pattern above Goulburn due to SYD also being reduced to 1 runway (I assumed bushfire related), also informed QF454 was the last SYD bound flight to depart MEL. (I wonder if any were able to get through before curfew)
7. SYD clouded with haze and first pass aborted, informed by Captain because of advice from ground control
8. circled around for a second pass and a normal landing, informed of UA incident causing delay
9. ALMOST clapped out loud as we landed.

These were unfortunate and unforseeable circumstances, all handled very professionally and very well by the QF captain and crew. Most importantly we did make it to our destination safely.

With everything that happened, the worst part of the flight was actually the horrible little brown bitter onion square things that accompanied a nice capsicum dip, passed off as an "in flight snack"
