Don't mow what the issue is but someone is parked on the taxi way surrounded by fire trucks. Seems to be creating a fair traffic jam behind him.

I can't see from where I am which airline it is. Had anyway heard anything?

Cheers

I just heard on Channel 9 news that a United Airlines aircraft blew tyres on takeoff this afternoon & was dumping fuel & returning the SYD. I assume that is what you are seeing.

Yeh definitely Untied. It has now turned in to the gate. Don't know why you would need 6 fire trucks once it has landed all ok and is being towed to the terminal.

Yep, is UA 840. 2 blown tyres on takeoff. 34 L closed until further notice.

Two tyres blown out so effectively landing on metal - hence all the trucks around it. And it probably blew more tyres on landing too - a mess alround.

Aha, I was wondering why they were taking off to the east when the wind was 030/15

Lots of reasons for that many fire vehicles to attend. The aircraft would still have some serious heat in the damaged undercarriage from dragging them back to the gate. Possible underwing/fuel tank damage may have occurred. Routinely, brake temps increase along with the risk of fire once the aircraft stops at the gate.
As an aside runway 34 L was badly gouged during the landing and is undergoing inspection by pavement experts before reopening.

Plus the fact that the fire vehicles are already on the field, so they might as well attend. Better safe than sorry.

The trucks or whatever must have transponders on them - they are visible on Flightradar24! You can watch them driving along the runway

Wonder how many flights will miss curfew today.

Aargh

Those reasonings are best left to the experts. Anything with fire and flammable liquid you take seriously.

If the problem was only tyres, why didn't it continue to its destination? Presumably the emergency services at LAX are up to par?

Because they were not sure of what else was an issue until they land, the tower reports 3 ton of debris were left on the runway, continuing on could have seen other debris that may have impacted the fuselage become a problem with help not so close. But if a no brainer really, despite landing at max weight.

Looking at flightradar24 is quite interesting at the moment. Lots of planes going around making squiggles and circles, and a fair few look to be headed to Canberra.

QF454 (ex MEL) appears to be just about to land now, with about an extra hour in the air after having left around about on time. Surprised that QF would carry so much extra fuel.

Just landed at MEL on QF449 almost 2 hours late. Captain onboard was loathe to explain over the PA what the delay was caused by because she had 14 fear-of-flying pax onboard! Bad time for them to pick for their first real flight!
