Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Here in the U.K. we had 4 covid deaths yesterday. FOUR!! To put that in context, 20 people a day in the U.K. die of suicide, around 450 a day of cancer and around 1600 a day generally. Lockdown worked, and now the vaccines are working to stop hospitalisation and death. I can’t tell you how annoyed I get when people pontificate that “the vaccines don’t stop transmission” or worse “AZ doesn’t work on the South African variant”. In fact it works very well on the SA variant in terms of serious illness or death. It doesn’t work so well on mild or moderate illness but since when did we shut down the world to prevent mild or moderate illness?

the “wait and see” approach on vaccines in Australia is just baffling. Genuinely interested to see how the narrative changes and how long it takes.

I get furious when people use the variants as an excuse to just keep everything locked. The 'wait and see' approach in Australia will lead them to be pretty much the North Korea of the region. Strangely enough, people don't even seem to care and are happy with this.

100% and now their is AZ sitting around? open it up to everybody and lets get on with this

There's actually a reason for that. I went to the doctor today to confirm I am eligible under underlying conditions and she said they instantly reserve a second dose for you the moment the first dose is administered. SO in essence, there will always be the same number of vaccines sitting around compared to the ones administered.

First AZ shot booked on 6th May!! One step closer..

There seems to be HEAPS of spots available in respiratory clinics at the moment - Apparently everyone is too scared of AZ

Its always seemed kind of werid to me that people want to compare themselves to the worst rather than the best.
I'm not by nature pessimistic; in fact the opposite, but the pragmatism in me suggests that the 'worst' would be the weakest link in the opening global network of some 190 countries.

I think you mean the number of vaccines for those who have had a first dose but not a second dose yet. Once people have had a second dose there’s no reason to hold another dose for them. Booster shots are still a long way off here.

Yep. Purely scare tactics. And it’s pushed by all aspects of the media, including the national broadcaster. Every single report specifically states “high contagious new UK/Scary African Gang variant”.

We had the “highly contagious” UK variant running totally loose in the Queensland community - and literally nobody other than direct contacts caught it.

Sounds pretty scary to me.
;)

I’m being provocative 😉

But it’s frustrating on so many levels. There was always going to be an African / South American variant as it scares people more. I was on the phone with my business partner in Cape Town when the “UK variant” became a thing, and his first statement was “that’s not going to scare you over there enough”.

The simple fact is that this is a coronavirus. There are countless “variants”, but the public is fed certain bits of information to push an agenda.

As the data is proving, whatever variant is running around, the vaccine still prevents one from dying or being hospitalized in an almost unfathomably high number of cases.

This is it in a nutshell! From what I hear and read from Aus it seems the fact that the vaccines are not infallible but they do significantly minimize personal risk gets ignored. Hoping you are right and once the US and UK get on with living with covid-19 the FOMO will kick in!

Correct. If I am restricted to visit my family overseas, why should you think you should be able to waltz in and out to do the same? Fair is fair, isn't it??? Come back or don't???

Real world data:

"Just 32 vaccinated people were hospitalised with Covid-19 in recent months, according to “extraordinary” real world data showing the effectiveness of Britain’s jabs programme.

The figure represents a tiny fraction of the more than 74,000 people admitted to hospital with the virus during the time period examined in the study."

32 out of 74,000 is pretty persuasive.

I never said waltz in and waltz out. Maybe read what I said before you give such ignorant responses.

Though yes for worldwide travel you need everywhere low. But vaccination may open up some countries before others.
Yes, for what they have been through, amazing result. Unfortunately, they are almost completely exposed to the rest of the world, to where we are not fully vaccinated and most countries are not. For instance, all of our current cases are from overseas.

Sorry, do you want to enter and then leave again? Excuse my ignorance, it gets in the road of my lucidity,

The respiratory clinics have been completely overloaded with vaccine and not many people are going to them now - whilst GP clinics with possibly up to 20x the eligible population base have been choked with just 50 doses a week and are getting through that before morning tea time on a Monday....

The back end supply and distribution is a disaster it’s not in the right places.

For instance, all of our current cases are from overseas.

Where else would they be from? Australia elected to take a position that involved totally isolating itself from the world. Do you honestly believe that’s sustainable? Especially when the UK (as one example) has proven the effectiveness of vaccines.

Its no different to any other virus. All our yellow fever cases are from overseas. Do you know how we manage that?

Well they could be community acquired? Yes, Australia took a position that shut down International arrivals and ultimately we ended up at eradication ( for which I think we criticised NZ at first)

Is it different to rhinovirus, norovirus, ebola, HIV, smallpox, Hendra, Marburg, RSV, ZIKA; shall I go on?

The GP I went to had doses remaining at morning tea time Tuesday (when I received mine). I didn't think to ask how many doses they received a week. But they were not overwhelmed with appointments for the jab either.
