Pancakes in QF lounges

When I got back to the machine the same guy is still there (bit strange), the counter says 2 of 4, there is one pancake on a plate at the end of the machine. So anyway, I grabbed number 2 and the guy says "excuse me they come out in pairs". matter of factly I explained the counter, I asked for 3 so 2, 3 and 4 must be mine and proceeded to take them.

Ah, there must be some variations. ADL is a single machine also the only one I've used. When it was first introduced it actually allowed selection of upto 4 or 5 by pushing a number then ok. There is now a blanking plate that only allows "ok" to be pushed.

I know the Holiday Inn Express in Vegas has a pancake maker in the foyer where the complimentary breakfast. Can't speak for other HIX's as we either slept in or had too early a start for breakfast. Can anyone else comment on pancake machines at other HIX hotels? ... The Staybridge Suites in Irving TX feature a waffle maker amongst other things for their complimentary breakfast buffet so others may be able to comment if this is standard issue for those properties.

You'll find hotel chains have certain service standard, especially the more budget types. I believe you should find a Waffle Maker in EVERY Hampton Inn; worldwide. I Stayed at a HIX in Toulouse and they had a 'pancake' machine.

My experience has been 100% press once for two pancakes. It is however limited to BNE (twice) and PER (too many times at 0440 ).

BNE is definitely two per press, but if you lift the front flap you can change that

Looks like I just earned the evil person award. Just went to the pancake machine, there was one in the process, push the ok button 3 times then went and grabbed a seat. Rather graceless on my part, but it's early and I think I was shocked about this whole "they come out in pairs" thing. Do they, have they ever come out in pairs?

Crikey Medhead, that's really skating on thin ice! Subtlely it would seem no two pancake machines are alike, so what you're doing is based on how the pancake machine behaves in ADL & what he's expecting is what happens at the pancake machine he's used to.

When you said you'd just got the 'evil person award' I thought you might have made the pancakes in the QP then taken them into the JL if there wasn't one there & watched some DYKWIA's frantically trying to locate the whereabouts of the said machine.

It probably highlights the need for 'pancake etiquette' but may be easier to arrive at the machine & if there's someone already there establish how many pancakes they're waiting for. Once you place your order at the machine, stay there 'til stumps & you've got what you ordered otherwise if you walk away it's possible someone else will come along & maybe use it for the first time & inadvertently kidnap your pancakes. :shock:

Just on the etiquette I am careful to check the counter on the machine before starting, to gauge the number someone else requires - X of Y type counter also with a moving display showing the pancakes moving through the machine. So far this year I always press "ok" 3 times and I've never ended up with 6 pancakes.

I guess the other bloke must have thought I was a pig when I press "ok" 3 times.

I've noticed the different yields at different airports. I think the single press for a single pancake is best. I've forced myself to eat to much at some lounges that give more than one pancake at once.

Not only is there a difference in quantity. There also seems to be a difference in size. The MEL J lounge seems to have the pancake machine set to much bigger size. They take up most of the plate. While BNE and SYD seem to have their machines set to pikelet size. I don't take morning flights very often so not sure if that is the norm.

Can anyone confirm/deny that the CL lounges have pancake machines?

MEL Dom QF club this morning had two in operation, the left one VH-PAN and the right VH-PKE were both operating at a rate of one per press, with VH-PAN operating slightly more efficiently. I'm also liking the animation of where the pancake is in the process.

In my experience the size varies from each machine slightly but it varies more depending on how full the pancake mix bladder is. The very first pancake from a full mixture bag is small (like a demo pancake) and then the pancakes are large for quite some time. After that they start to diminish in size until about the size of a closed fist before the bag runs out.
