Hi all
In the ever changing world that is my travel plans I am now thinking of changing my trip to Tokyo. I was planning to fly to Tokyo on 2 Dec and return to SYD ovenight on 8 Dec.

I have now realised that there probably isnt 5 days of work for me in Tokyo and that I could spend 2-3 days in HKG.

I am about to email the TA and request a quote for the change. One thing I am thinking is whether I can get a oneworld circle pacific ticket and whether that would be cheaper.

My current routing is:

2/12 QF21 SYD-NRT 22:05 333
8/12 QF 22 NRT-SYD 20:00 333

I am waitlisted for a ticket on QF22 as follows:
Service: Business Class / DRT
Status: ***W A I T L I S T E D***

But have a confirmed ticket on QF22 at I think a higher price:
Service: Business Class / JRT1
Status: Confirmed

My planned potential routing and availability would be:

2/12 QF21 SYD-NRT 22:05 333 (already confirmed in J)

6/12 CX550 NRT-HKG 18:30

F0 A0 J4 C0 D0 I0 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V9 S9 N9 Q9 O9

8/12 QF128 HKG-SYD 20:25

F3 A0 Z0 P0 J0 C0 D0 I0 U0 Y3 B1 H0 K0 M0 R0 L0 V0 S0 N0 Q0 O0 G0 T0 X0 E0

There doesnt seem to be a lot of availability at all in J (some F). I am going to ask for a quote for the F travel (need to be approved by my boss). One alternative might be:

CX 101
HKG 08/12/06 11:55 PM
SYD 09/12/06 12:05 PM
F4 A4 J0 C0 D0 I0 Y0 B0 H0 K0 M0 L0 V0 S0 N0 Q0 O0

Does the circle pacific fare book into A - in which case I could maybe get an A class CP fare (yes I know I lose the F seat on two of the legs but thats life).

I couldnt find a circle pacific price from Oz anywhere obvious to me (it is 6AM here in Singapore).

Any help would be appreciated.

S

that isnt a circle pacific (you need to visit US/Canada) but rather circle asia

I'm not sure how the OW version works, but the *A circle asia requires one and only one flight between Oz/NZ and north asia, north asia and southeast asia, southeast asia and Oz/NZ. You can have extra flights within each region as long as follow the rules (eg maximum total mileage).

As with RTW products, circle products book into discounted booking classes.

Thanks - I am loathe to think this - but I might find myself somehow flying SYD-LAX-NRT to get an F fare - if the circle pacific was cheaper than a straight first flight from HKG-SYD. I guess if I was in F I would sleep a LOT.

Frack this will be a tough trip.

As an aside can I add domestic trips to the circle pacific fare in the same way that I can add them to oneworld explorer?

No. Itinerary stops when you return to point of origin.

subject to mileage you could do something like HKG-AKL-MEL-BNE-SYD, make a stopover in AKL and combine with cheaper fares trans-tasman on separate ticket

ASIAN DISCOVERY FARE, Base Price: AUD5813

Whoops ...

I was going to mention this D class fare but it does not allow travel via Japan!

Just checking out the potential routings now. Amusing quote from the TA:

Gee were you a travel agent in a past live as you have the wording down pat.

Guess I cant take credit for that ;)

Checked out my qpoints and I dont want to get too excited yet but if I did have to route via LAX to do a circle pacific (not even sure if that is possible at the moment or the price would be doable) it might put me 200miles over being EXP

Just checking the two most obvious flights SYD-LAX and LAX-NRT

SYD-LAX:
QF 11
SYD 02/12/06 03:20 PM
LAX 02/12/06 09:45 AM 744 LR
F9 A9 Z0 P0 J9 C0 D0

LAX-NRT
AA 169
LAX 02/12/06 11:40 AM
NRT 03/12/06 04:40 PM 777 LD
F2 A0 J0 D0 I0

Hmm - guess that means LAX-NRT is out (no A class which I assume is the circle pacific fare) unless I fly JAL:

JL 61
LAX 02/12/06 11:55 AM
NRT 03/12/06 04:40 PM 744
F0 C4 D4 I0 Y9 B9 X9 K9 S9 Q9 H9 M9 G9

Not sure what the C class fare is though :-|

I tried to get a trip from the ITA planner but not much is working well for me. is there another way to get to the US without going to LAX? Is there a direct oneworld flight to SFO maybe?

JL isnt yet a OW member so you'll need AA flights.

I think SJC-NRT has been discontinued so that leaves LAX-NRT, DFW-NRT, ORD-NRT, JFK-NRT.

Just checking but I dont think based on the aa site I dont think that JAL accrues qpoints?

Oops - thanks KF - I guess I was getting ahead of myself ;)

I guess it's moot but for many carriers C = J.

Sorry to harass but does a codeshare accrue qpoints and are they available for a circle pacific fare?

I could get a flight to HNL:

QF 3
SYD 02/12/06 08:50 PM
HNL 02/12/06 09:10 AM 743
J8 C8 D7 I0

AA(JO) 5977
HNL 02/12/06 12:35 PM
NRT 03/12/06 04:35 PM 747
J7 D7 I7 Y7

Not sure though that the AA (JO) flight would be available. I know also that the SYD-HNL flight would be cough as its a 743.

Codeshare does earn qpoints (using the AA code of course), but JL operated flight cannot be used on Circle Pacific fare until they become a full OneWorld member.

I have found AA has limited D availability on their NRT flights, especially Friday through Monday. They seem to prefer to offer the business class seats as upgrades rather than to people on paid D fares.

Alternately you want an Asian Discovery Fare, with the fare basis of DEE3MCT1 for A$5813+++. Vaid for QF, BA, CX, KA (Dragon Air). A surcharge of $150 applies to travel via Thailand, Mainland China, Bombay and Cambodia.

Thanks for that. Not overly concerned about qpoints as if I cant fly out of LAX/DFW/ORD and arrive in NRT on Sunday then I wont make EXP (will be short 10K qpoints).

Does the Asian Discovery fare have an F version? The reason for asking is that there is no J availability out of HKG to SYD.

I am thinking that its just going to be esaier to get an F ticket out of HKG on the friday on CX...

I posted this earlier but removed it when I relaised that it is not valid for Japan: http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/community/106367-7-post.html

Ahh, missed the Japan part. I noted the Korea and Vietnam. Does not really give to many options, then does it, especially if trying to avoid the $150 surcharges!
Yeah, 'tis more a circle sub-continent fare (avioding BOM) with HKG (and TPE perhaps) thrown in.

Note there is a 6 segment limitation (+2 in Oz for required transfers).

Thanks as always guys. Over dinner this evening I resigned myself to a friday night flight out of SYD (to take advantge of lax-nrt flights) so any improvement on that will be a win :)

I have also warned mrs simongr about lack of simongr but I think that she was only half awake so not sure she realised ;)

Three months without a trip is going to be nice.
