Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Re: Nice Wines I have DranK Recently - Red or White

What a great party trick though :D
It's an old method but a good one - although I have not seen it done with a shoe before.

I have in the past used a towel (from a tea towel to a beach towel) to do it. (There a tip for a hen's night or similar where only stilettos are available :p)

Oh, I first saw at a footy club do in the 70's - the bottom of the bottle was encased if a few pairs of footy socks ..

Only real issue it does tend to aerate the wine a little ...

And really dislodge any crust, or stir up sediment, however, you can always filter through a coffee filter paper held in a funnel.

Currently enjoying a Gapsted Late Harvest Semillion with Brie, strawberries and grapes.

Well I had a weekend of excess in the wine department. Included a couple of '29 Burgs and two huge guns. The '45 Margaux and '61 Lafite.

There are some big big names there. How did they taste ?

Re: Nice Wines I have DranK Recently - Red or White

For those who asked, I attended this dinner on Friday night - Perth Bordeaux Rare Wine Dinner March 2014 - Rare Wine Dinners

My tasting notes are at home and happy to share them here if there is interest.

All wines were showing well. It just goes to prove how important good provenance is!

Of the '29 Burgs, the Clos de le Justice was singing. Amazing typical old Burgundian nose with a palate to match. The '45 Margaux had been decanted for a few hours and was still a little closed on the nose. Still quite tannic but with matching fruit and acid, will last forever! The '61 Lafite was my wine of the night. Stunning! Huge nose of dark fruit, earthiness, leather, forest floor (really need to refer to my notes). Finish went on for ever. This is probably now the best Bordeaux I've had, eclipsing the '50 Petrus.

The two champagnes to start were quite different. The '95 Le Grande Dame was quite developed, but still plenty of mousse. By contrast the '05 Pommery Louise was still quite tight with a long future.

The German Rieslings were stunning too.

I've been to several of these Rare Wine Dinners. While not cheap, they are well worth it in my opinion.

If you have questions about specific wines, ask away.

[h=1]2012 Coldstream Hills Pinot Noir[/h]Light ruby. Nose of raspberry, red cherries and possibly a hint of redskin (that's a lolly for those in the US).

In the mouth this is extremely balanced. Medium plus acid, medium minus velvety tannins. Sour cherry, juicy red fruits and a hint of vanilla. Finishes medium plus to almost long. Makes me want to take another mouthful.

Should be interested to see how this evolves over the next few years. Drinking well now and expect some lovely tertiary characteristics to develop in the next few years.

I think your last Friday night selection was marginally more expressive and somewhat more nuanced on the back palate - even though it was merely an average weekday effort for Princess Fiona :p.

Henschke Hill of Grace 1996

This guy has been insolently teasing me for ages - along with its yearly siblings. I got sick of it, so when some friends dropped by, and we only had chops and snags to put on the BBQ, I thought that I had to produce something to lift the tenor of the evening so I got it out and wrung its neck.

Or rather, I gently eased the cork out, actually used the decanter and we all enjoyed it immensely with our chops and snags.

BTW I hadn't seen that 'open a bottle without a corkscrew' before. Jeepers, I hope everyone here would rather leave the bottle unopened than subject any decent red to that?

Well done! I have a 2001 Hill of Grace in the cabinet teasing me. I'd better get in some snags and chops ;). It's all about occasion :D.
