Yeah, I'd say its premature to call it out of control but its also too soon to say it's not, next few days to a week will tell us better.

NZ south of the "Auckland Boundry" will go to level 3 on Tuesday.
The remainder (ie Auckland & north) will remain at level 4. NZ PM indicates it's a much bigger outbreak than they though, possibly as big as the original outbreak in early 2020, and is likely to be in lockdown for a further two weeks at least.

Definitely different language to a few days ago, from "it's fine, this is not unexpected" to "this is serious, but lockdown will work eventually".

Given some think out of control mean lockdown is having no effect, then all lockdowns will have some downward effect.

I plotted the recent Delta outbreaks in Australia & NZ by days from zero cases.

It is clear to see that NZ is far above the three Australian outbreaks. But it's too early to say where it will go.

She's been asked, everytime she's asked about vaccination she criticises Australia, AstraZenica or both.

Must be wonderful running a country without those pesky states to oppose you!

It’s a shame, but it does seem this is now out of control in New Zealand, so that does make them the last of the doona nations to fall. I guess we can categorically say the elimination strategy just doesn’t work.

As for NZ, that graph above is really quite telling. Either they do a better job at testing and locating cases in the early days, or they are in for some particularly challenging days ahead...

The language and tone of Jacinda Ardern was remarkably different to the last two weeks. I would say they are concerned.

A lot of the spread is in the Pasifika community (never knew that term until this week - we would just say Pacific Islander) - up to 2/3, which I believe are more vulnerable.

Frankly the first week or so tell you very little about the effectiveness of a lockdown as it’s largely the flow through of what happened pre lockdown, we all know it takes a while for symptoms to show. This next week or so will be a much better gauge.

I can categorically say the use of the check-in app here in NZ before this outbreak was shocking! Never enforced and the public were so complacent.

And they're not even holding a press conference today, for the highest number of cases since April 2020.

Australian Premiers get blasted for sending their deputies, let alone not holding one at all.

Hendy said tightening restrictions could even include thinking about "selectively closing supermarkets" and other essential businesses.

'We'd like to see numbers come down': Govt may need to tighten level 4 restrictions if numbers don't drop

But 'while it is still in known clusters, you can't say it's out of control.'

I've not read the article, but it would be simpler to close based on odd or even number of postcode or something like that.

So the underlying factor in Auckland, south western Sydney and western Melbourne are the underlying economic factors of expensive property and casualised work.

I suspect the Pasifika community are more trusting of their government though.

Wait, the same thing has finally happened in NZ as well as Australia! No wayyyy…. Who could have seen that coming.

Oh well at least they’ve been smashing their vaccination program. Cough… oh wait….

So what exactly HAS NZ been doing apart from grand standing around making public speeches about how they are the envy of the world, as Hollywood moves more film production OUT of the country due to their restrictions… oh dear…
