New Zealand Reports of the Virus Spread

+11 for NZ, total 31, including 2 for Wellington. I'm guessing at least the North Island will stay locked down.

Suggest we rename the thread to "NZ reports of the virus spread" so it lives on post lockdown.
Well there is a NZ fresh cases thread a previous time......

NZ national lockdown extended to be 7 days total (not just Auckland).

+21 cases for NZ today

Up to 51 total

+35 cases today
107 total.

This is truly NZ’s greatest test to date. It will probably speed up their vaccinations.

NZ lockdown extended by another 4 days (until Friday), Auckland another week (total 14 days so far).

New Zealand records 62 new local COVID-19 cases

Its the highest daily number since the outbreak began last week, and takes the total number from the current outbreak over 200.
New Zealand is in a nationwide lockdown until at least Friday, while Auckland will be in lockdown until next week, after the outbreak began there from a returned traveller from Sydney.
The country's Director General of Health, Dr Ashley Bloomfield says cases are rising, but it is not exponential.
12 of these cases are in Wellington while the rest are in Auckland, he said.

There. Fixed it for the ABC. The origin of an international traveller is completely irrelevant if you are putting them in full HQ, unless you're trying to imply that origin is responsible for the HQ leak.

The number of people who are blaming NSW on both sides of the Tasman is huge thanks to arguably blatant misreporting of the facts. Some even claiming that the NZ outbreak wouldn't have happened if Gladys had controlled the outbreak and the person in MIQ wouldn't have been positive!

Looks like the "snap lockdowns" are anything but snap if your community is operating in 100% open mode when you get a case. WA and Queensland should pay attention here.

Correct. This is why I’ve always wondered why we’ve played this continual game of “on again, off again” restrictions. Why did we not just set restrictions in mid 2020 (after we’d had the first lockdown to allow the system to prepare) and stick with them?

I think what they have on their side at the moment is with 50 cases in AKL and 12 in WLG it's not as yet out of control and spreading to the regions

AKL is geographically a very spread out city, Their lockdowns are tight and hard and Kiwi's as a general rule roll up there sleeves, muck in and get the job done without to much complaint so I think they have a fighting chance with this.

Is the spread in South Auckland? That will be the test as South Auckland is a lot like SW Sydney and NW Melbourne with a wide ethnic mix, lots of critical workers who cant isolate, multigenerational living etc.

It has got into a Samoan church

It's following a similar trajectory to the Australian outbreaks. What will be key is whether they need to extend beyond the 14 days.

Their lockdown is far stricter than any of ours, theoretically should reduce the Reff, but time will tell.

The silver lining is it motivated their vaccine takeup like it has in NSW & VIC.

Yeah, I thought we were doing well in NSW but their rate has really kicked up, still behind us though.

+70 cases for NZ today, total cluster is 347.

Lockdown extension decision to be announced at 3pm local (Auckland was already going until Tuesday)

It’s a shame, but it does seem this is now out of control in New Zealand, so that does make them the last of the doona nations to fall. I guess we can categorically say the elimination strategy just doesn’t work. As one saving grace, it will force vaccination rates up and a more realistic national approach taking over.

I don’t know if it’s out of control as it’s still early on in the outbreak (inside the 14 days), but certainly it seems like it was widespread before they locked down.

If community cases keep going up after Tuesday then we know they are in trouble.
