Hey ya'll

yesterday on QF 437 SYD/MEL - the onboard safety video had been changed to a stylish new video - the opening much like the SIA video with Capt Marv addressing the captive audience onboard. ;)

I asked the CSM as she served me a Crown in a glass (wouldn't give me the bottle!) how long it had been playing, she said it was her first time seeing it as well

I also noticed that the 767 I was refitted - the old CRT TV's at least in J had been replaced with LCD panels and the cabin had a "fresh" look (at lease as fresh as a 767 can look) about it.

This leads me to thinking that QF may be looking for a few more years from these old girls... hmmmm

Mr!

Yesterdays' 437 was ZXD; these ZX's were all refurbished through their maintenance cycles along with the rest after the announcement of the "new" grey livery last year.

How many of the 767's now have LCD's?

Qantas is making the saftey demodstrations a bit more lively-bet mainly on international flights.

It is good that they finally got rid of those CRTs, with small LCD with such a cheap price it is the way to go, also it reduced the weight of the aircraft.... and save fuel...

At least they've finally got rid of that Stupid (and grammatically incorrect) "sutblely every aircraft is different"

When will they give away that important instruction of how to fasten a seatbelt?

Iactually ind that some of the aircraft are radically different, seats, engines (number of), livery... but teh common theme is a seatbelt and lights pointing an exit and the likelihood that in the event of a crash we will all be killed anyway.

There are still lots of examples of poor language in the announcements used by Qantas

e.g.

"All electronic devices must not be switched on" => If I have 2 electronic devices and one is switched off and the other is on, then all must be fine

When will they give away that important instruction of how to fasten a seatbelt?

A lot of research went into the design on the new seat belts and concluded that in an emergency, passengers natural reaction to release the belt was to push a button, like on a car, not lift a buckle.

So that is why the new seat belts are the same as in a car, and why the instruction will always be given - it's not that obvious for some people.

Actually I think you will find it is a legal requirement in the CAR's or CAO's (can never remember which). Even flying light aircraft you have to give the same brief.

We had a QF charter 2 years ago and the FA had to give the Safety again even though everyone was the same on the plane - except 1 person.

I was doing a PPL a while ago, stopped by my future wife,
did solo already, always remember the briefing between pilots
just before T/O,

"if we have an engine failure during take off, if there are sufficient R/W, we stop, if we do not have enough R/W, keep going, do not consider coming
back to the R/W unless we are at least 500 feet..."

Also one of the lesson I enjoyed most is emergency landings... and I somehow remembered the brief to passengers.. it goes like this...

"unfortunately we have encountered engine problem and have to perform an emergency landing, your pilot has been trained for this so please be calm. Please ensure your seatbelt is fasterned and ensure that all lose items are secured, also remove any sharp objects on you , after we land please leave the A/C immediately and assemble near the back of the A/C"

doing this while

1. Spotting a landing place
2. Controling the plane at best glide speed
3. Making mayday calls
4. trying to restart engine !

Just finished reading an ATSB safety report into the ditching of a PA32 in Torres Strait. Remarkably pilot & 3 pax survived - even though 1 in rear seats took the remarkable decision to unbuckle his/her seat belt AND the child next to them as he/she thought they would be able to escape the cabin easier after the impact!!!

Somehow they survived but got mooshed somewhat into the seatback ahead of them when propelled forward by impact.

There are people out there you cannot lecture ...

I wonder when they will get rid of the Non-smoking indicator. Surely everyone knows by now that you can't smoke on a plane.

At least remove the lights. Surely 200 or so lights would add a tiny bit of excess weight to the plane.

Someone tell me they didn't put the NS indicator into the A380!

This is related to the QF safety brief. On the weekend I was flying SIN-PER (QF78) on an A330. The safety brief was in both English and French. This was the first time I have heard it in French (admittedly I have only flown PER-SIN-PER twice in the last 8 months).

Now I'm thinking the reasons for this are:

1. It was an Air France codeshare so it was in French. But then I think it is also a Jet Airways codeshare, so why French?

2. Airbus leaves the English/French option in there as some kind of default and it was just turned on for this flight?

Does anyone know which (if any) of these reasons are correct, or what the real reason was?
