For those looking at the whole 130k in one hit:

The cost to buy 80,000 + 50,000 Bonus miles is $3,010.00 (including taxes/fees)*

That gets you a rate of 2.32c per mile.

Even if you were to try and buy 30k+19k ($1128.75) and then 50k+33.5k ($1881.25), the total would still be $3010 and the 52.5k bonus would be capped at 50k.

If you didn't want to spend that much and wanted say 15k+8k ($564.38) and 30k+19k ($1128.75) for a total of 72k miles it would cost $1693.13 and get you a rate of 2.35c per mile which isn't all that different to the larger outlay.

For 15k+8k ($564.38) and 50k+33.5k ($1881.25), that will get you 106.5k miles for a total of $2445.63, giving a rate of 2.30c per mile. A bit better.

I saw it first on BoardingArea (only one blogger has covered it so far AFAIK). I confirmed it by going to the US Airways website. I'm surprised there was no email which was sent out about it, and given it is a "public" promotion, I'm surprised that they still need US DM details to unlock the Buy Miles engine.

Purchased a stack in last promo, can buy again in this one?.

Of course you can....

Well....assuming that you're eligible for this promotion, you'll receive the bonus as gazetted...

Should be OK then, purchased in last promo (been a member for a few months).

Hopefully no changes will occur to the USDM programme until it is merged with Adv about 6 months out. Presumably US will continue to offer bonuses during that period, it a matter a picking the best one.

Why do you think this is a bad sign? Do you think this is the prelude to some sweeping changes to the USDM program?

Possibly for a start that people will not be able to buy miles at prices which they had been accustomed to, viz. 1.88c per mile.

But most are foreboding your latter suggestion in the lead up to the AA merger.

What he said.

Got the email about this promo overnight...and the one which AA has been running which has quite a similar structure and a similar cpm cost for max purchase...hmmm. US has run quite unattractive promos like this before but it is quite likely the new norm...although AA has in the past run better promos than it is offering now.

Still think its a good deal OZ to Europe in J for about AUD$3500, looks good to me.

It is still a good deal...it just depends how long you've been playing the game and you remember numbers more in the low $2ks!

Might I suggest that you check out the Delta and United redemption rates, to get an inkling of where the new AAdvantage may be heading award price-wise?

Damn - I held off the last promo hoping there would be the elusive share promo to load up on points before the merger...

I have to agree - it isn't the best sign. And with an email overnight laying down further info about the merger I daresay we will be leaning more towards the AA bonus model, rather than the USDM model.

There was some suggestion the last USDM 2-4-1 promo was going to be the last.

This current round seems more in line with AA offerings (30% or 40% bonus miles, or alternatively, a 30% or 40% reduction in the cost of miles. It seems to change).

I would not be surprised if USDM moves to the annual mileage limit in line with AA in the near future. Which pretty much limits a return to Europe (with purchased miles) once every couple of years.

Re: Rumour:[Denied by RR] Qantas to ban JQ SYD-MEL pax from F lounges & send to J lou

Like more points and less restrictive routing rules?.

AA has more restrictive rules than USDM.

there are a bunch of routing limitations (for example, you cannot fly from australia to europe with a connection in the Middle East), and generally speaking, for any proposed itinerary, the airlines in question must have a published fare for that route.

where USDM might let you add bits and pieces of flights here and there to get to where you want, with AA, if it's not a recognised routing/fare, you won't be getting it on miles. in a way it's kinda like the USDM 'most direct route' rule, although the AA one is enforced.

also so no stopovers with AA.
