Lamest QF promotion ever

Or could you buy two seats because you want the extra space? Is that allowed and earn both FFP/SC for both seats?

However;

I agree, for similar J prices to AKL you might as well jump on a proper J class like onboard an EK A380.

That is something I do often domestically in Y. Ive had lots of comments about how great it is to have a spare seat between us on "full" flights until I tell them ive actually paid for it, so they owe me half! and yes, you do earn double everything, the only pain is iot doesnt automatically happen, you need to email FF, but they sort it out really quickly.

Whilst LAN is not quite up to the standard of EK, at $700 odd for SYD-AKL, id rather book 2 single return fares rather than the QF double, pocket the $400 p/p fare difference, and fly on a true international A340 than a domestic configured QF 737/767 operated by "jitkeneckt".

You may have lost me here. Are you saying that you CAN earn points and status credits for TWO seats on the same flight? Wow.

I agree that the promotion doesn't do anything for solo travellers, but I guess Qantas is trying to maximise passenger numbers and a 2-4-1 business class deal helps them achieve this.

My wife and I just took advantage of the promotion and booked a couple of east-west coast flights to visit family.

Yes, but you cant book it yourself online, as the system will cancel the second booking in your name. You must call QF and there must be 2 seats in the same fare class available for you to book the second seat for what they call "comfort". They waive all the service fees because it can only be booked through them but you must pay the CC fee. Youll see the second seat it in your FF profile as EXST. You only get one boarding card (BC) which will have EXST written in the service info area at the bottom of the BC. The beauty of this is that you only pay the actual fare (plus GST) on the second seat and not the taxes.

Like I said, the second seat points and SC's do NOT automatically credit, but a quick email to the FF service centre sorts that out.

Smart way to get some comfort and full Y SC's.

If your really desperate for SC's you can even book 3 seats!! In my case, I needed the luggage allowance, and its good to know that if you have status with QF, the extra luggage benefits extend to each extra seat purchased.

I just looked this up on LAN.com and got a price for $748 SYD-AKL RETURN in business. Less than a third the cost of QF, and still get QF status credits. The return flight is a bit of a killer, but the one time I've taken that flight, I slept well pretty much all the way.

I still can't believe that QF can charge so much for the flight to AKL in what really is below par metal.

Again another discriminatory promotion that treats single people as being of less value than those in a relationship.

Like John I am single and a frequent leisure traveller and yes I do like the premium cabin.

Actually it treats the single traveller as being of more value. More value to qantas ;)

I guess it depends on your situation. I needed to get a family of four over to South America, and when this special apeared it was like a gift from God!! Have never made a booking so fast. Thank you Qantas!!!!

Bit like the Government with singles vs. families really. ;)

Same with hotels and room rates (for a very long time!)

Thats a bit unfair isnt it?? but using then same logic, wouldnt car hire companies also be included??

despite being certain QF have dotted their i's and crossed their t's on this one, there does seem to be a waft of discrimination in the companion offer, given that an ONE airline seat has to be occupied by ONE person, unlike a hotel room that can be occupied by more than one person.

The thing that I cant get my head around is that you can buy the LAN fare for $748, but if you buy the same flights on the QF codeshare, its $2589. If you take advantage of the companion fare sale the price drops to $1057 per person, but given that 2 fares must be purchased, its really $2114. That is a whopping 30% more expensive than 2 seats booked with LAN!!. Qantas really needs to be issued with a "please explain" on this one.....

Red Red Red Red Roo... Where are you.....?? (sung to the scooby doo theme tune!)

where is the discrimination? And i've seen other airlines that offer exactly the same thing! heck Amex offer the same thing for the plat card holders!

Dont AMEX offer a straight 2 for 1 deal?

The discrimination is that, as a solo traveller, you get charged $2500. As a couple, you get charged $1000 each, and it seems that as a solo traveller, you cant even buy 2 of the $1000 seats, to save yourself $500. To me, that discriminates against single people, or those only needing 1 seat. What is the difference to QF if they offered, as part of the sale, each seat at $1000? IMO, theyd probably sell more seats, and as has been mentioned before, its not like a hotel room where you use the entire room wether its 1 person or 2.

And just because everyone else does it, doesn't make it OK. But like I said, i'm sure QF have done their home work to ensure the offer complies with all applicable laws etc, so it's really a moot point.
The offer is what it is. If you can use it. Great. If not, in the case of AKL, go book with LAN and pocket the $1800 that you'd have paid to QF so they can pay AJ his multi million dollar bonus!

This is a sale for a holiday period. It encourages groups travelling for holidays to spend more with qantas on more expensive seats. Solo business travellers are not going to rush back from their holiday and go on a solo business trip just because the fare is half price.

As for discrimination. What law protects solo travellers from discrimination? Or in other words of course qantas has checked the legal implications, a very quick check as well - "there is no law against this, great let's do it"

No it isn't 2 for 1 anymore..

any type of sale a company puts on could be given the discrimination angle. Please give me a break... It isn't discrimination at all.

Rooms pretty much cost the same, regardless of whether there are 1 or 2 people occupying. Stating a price based on twin share just makes it look cheaper, rather than actually being less.
