Is there anyone who has never flown Economy Class

Haven't flown anything but economy....one day!

For the "never beens", the more interesting question then is, let's say you've been gifted a First or business ticket, or you've decided to spend all of your miles accumulated through hundreds of discount economy tickets for that rare first or business ticket. Do you sleep on the plane or stay awake the whole way to experience every second of it?

So true! What a dilemma (but a nice one) to have. :) To experience the soft product (food, drinks etc.) or the hard (the bed)? I suspect this would be mainly driven by whether it is a day or night flight. My first F on the A380 was a midnight departure from SIN (to LHR) after a day flying from NRT and 5 or so hours of lounge time. I was totally zonked when we took off, but they were serving Bin 707 so I forced myself to stay awake for 2 or 3 hours at least. Must say when i did sleep it was a good one. If not really tired, then happy to stay awake most or all of a day/evening flight, but certainly been known to snooze during same.

As far as the OP goes, have flown Y heaps of times long haul, but have managed to avoid it on any flights >4 hours for the last five years or so. Any flights up to that length Y is quite tolerable (though J/F would be nicer of course). And I imagine there is every chance I'll be back in Y long haul sometime in the not-too-distant future. :(

Threads like this always depress me....... :(
Why?

I enjoy travel and I do not care what cabin I fly. More than likely it will be the cabin I can afford and there is no point wishing I could fly up the front when reality dictates it will be down the back somewhere.

More long haul flights coming up next month in economy and I am actualy looking forward to the trip as the last trip was a nightmare.

I believe for those of us who fly Y more than J, the main criteria for spending cash or points for J is the length of flight (sure there are plenty of others). On that basis, I'm going to enjoy the offerings of food and beverage to the fullest and then enjoy a short sleep as well.

First J experience was last year with USDM, prior to that all flights had been Y... I have enough points for several more J trips, but still don't mind flying Y for the short routes... But yes, didn't get that much sleep because of enjoying the experience, maybe my next trip might be a bit more blasé about it and more sleep be gotten... Probably not... :) But will never become so precious that can't do Y, especially if travelling with friends etc...

I'd probably stay awake long enough to enjoy the food....then make the most of actually being able to sleep.

I have to say my comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek. :)

I do quite enjoy flying as well, and the few personal long-haul flights I've taken that I've had to pay for has been in Y and I've been quite happy to do so. It's the other 250 or so flights that have been paid for by work that it would be nice to turn left sometimes...... ;)

However, I enjoy the work I do and because of it I've seen more of the world than would have otherwise been possible, so until something changes (unlikely) I'll continue with Y or Y+ and leave J & F for the others... :D

After the first 9 hours of QF129 yesterday I wish I had not flow economy. The last couple of hours was bizarre, it was as if the Cabin Service Supervisor noticed there was someone in my seat. :?:

Don't do it. Its the sharp end of the wedge that will have you wanting it all the time.

I confess that I have never done drugs or have a problem with alcohol or gambling. Collecting FF Points and flying anything but Y seems to be my addiction. Thankfully my addiction is legal.

I am willing to swap my Y seat for some 'poor' individual who is in J or better so that they can experience Y for the first time in their lives. No need to thank me!

i'm another that hasn't flown anything except Y. it doesn't matter domestically, 3-4 hours isn't worth paying the extra for (plus company travel policy is Y). international is the killer. i guess i know that once i fly J the first time it'll be extremely hard (if not impossible) to go back to international Y. just did a quick tally and i think i've done about 34 7+ hour sectors in Y. not necessarily fun when you're 6'5, but for me travel is worth it. and i've been fortunate to be very lucky with exit-row seating :) thanks to this website my next europe trip will be in J.. points balance accruing nicely.

Honestly, I'm just happy if I can get an exit row. All the perks would be lovely, but if I've got a little leg room I'm comfortable enough...I'd rather save my money for serious shopping. :D

Great attitude Blackcat20!!

Don't succumb to the temptation - there's no going back!

I certainly cannot say I have never flown in Y - that's where the majority of us start our flying life, including me.

However after collecting points for an eternity, my first foray into a RTW in J (IIRC 330K - went over mileage so cost be that extra 30K) then paying for a DONE4 and AONE4, meant that I wasn't willingly going to want to ever sit in Y if I had the points for J. I think age also plays a factor.

Add a wife and now 2 kids both above 2 (so seats needed for all), my addition to points is obvious. Our last 3 years' overseas trips, only 2 sectors have been in Y (1 was LHR/PRG, the other BNE/NAN). but it's sjso good for my kids to realise the pointy end shouldn't always be their expectation.

Domestic travel is paid Y (but JASA's or upgrades to J with points are appreciated)

Domestic mostly Y
International - in the "olden times" when three or four seats down the back were often available.
Nowdays thanks to AFF, AMEX, ATO Kris Flyer etc - No.
However, I will never be able to retire and stop earning points !

I'm still kicking myself for not flying Y+ to the US when it was $2200 return...probably for the best though.

whY these days is a breeze........the days of the big screen hanging from the ceiling are long gone.

Flown all classes & really haven't had a bad flight.....the kids have been fortunate to enjoy F, J, much earlier in their life than me.

We're (kids & I) in for a rude shock come Easter! SWMBO got a rush of blood & booked whY specials to SIN......the 5hrs in SYD Flounge should dull the senses for one of the flights!

In fairness - you only probably paid ~$1100 for the Y seat - so you may have still come out in front with the shopping money ;)

Each to their own - but I'm not quite sure that Y+ is particularly worth it....especially if you can leverage the advice around here and secure a semi-decent Y seat.
